The 2024 MLB Draft - Discussion Thread

Have to wonder if the reason the Tigers drafted Seibert is because of the alleged academic issues. There are other pitchers out there they could have taken if it was simply about throwing a lot of money at someone.

Question is Seibert any relation to Sonny Seibert pitched for Red Sox back in the day?

Yeah, I mentioned it earlier, but it almost feels like a luxury pick in the event Seibert can't cut it academically to get in school, or just doesn't want to put in the work. They get him pretty cheap, too, this way. Will probably have to pay him a pretty bonus, but not anything near what they'd have had to if they took him in the 4th or 5th round.

Both McKee and Cain expect Lucas Ramirez to sign. I feel like Rataczak should sign if he has any designs on playing pro ball at this point. We probably have a pretty good shot at keeping the others.
Really? Why go the minors route when drafted so late the money won't be good? He should come to UT and increase his value. Maybe he just doesn't like school?

He may surprisingly actually get through the academic issues but it’s the injury that Eric Cain has now reported that will keep him from throwing for a year. That’s what kept teams away more than the academics I think.

Give him a year to heal. No need to rush these things. Does anyone have a list of our signees that are for sure not coming?

Drafted thus far are:
- SS Ty Southisene (4th round - will sign)
- SS Trey Snyder (5th round - will sign)
- RHP Anson Seibert (16th round - has an injury and academic issues to work through, so most think he's got a pretty good shot at coming to campus)
- OF Lucas Ramirez (17th round - already being reported that he's expected to sign with the Angels)
- OF Ethan Wagner (17th round - not much has been said here, but we probably have a decent shot at getting him to campus)

And you of course have Rataczak as well, but he's a transfer. I'll be super surprised if he ends up in Knoxville.

So, if it holds up losing 3-4 guys in this class to MLB would be a victory for sure. Mckee said he expects Rataczak to sign with the Marlins.

Absolutely, we're still in great shape. I think we were a little surprised by the spate of late-round picks today, but it's still a great result. Looks like we have a decent shot at holding onto Seibert and Wagner. Also, some other squads (like Wake Forest, Texas, FSU, Virginia, and Kentucky) were hit much harder by the draft.

And yes, it's pretty hard to imagine Rataczak's stock improving after one more year in college when he's already 23.
