I really don’t know how to explain it, I just now that the youth of today (including people my age) and just society in general is too coddled. For Jesus sakes we changed the name of the Redskins (who I refuse to call the football team) I just long for the days people weren’t so offended by everything 🤷‍♂️
I do not believe there's a legitimate argument for not changing the WFT name. It's quite literally a slur. Far different from even the Braves or the Indians. You keep telling on yourself in this thread.

I am surprised the good people of India have allowed Cleveland to use their name for so long.

They are 2 totally different things and one does not effect the other. Capitalism has nothing to do with being an amateur athlete, it's up to the athlete to determine if he no longer wants to be an amateur not capitalism. Capitalism is why Bobby Jones quit golf competition, staying an amateur was considered a class move by Jones for sticking to his beliefs about the game, it's doubtful that you've ever been considered in the same light, people don't respect goons and jerks.

You probably shouldn't be commenting on class while name-calling at the same time.

If the Braves ever cave, and as Braves fan it pains to say it, but is likely a foregone conclusion, I hope they point out that in Cherokee, NC, on Cherokee land is Cherokee High School, and their nickname is the Braves. If it is good enough for the Cherokee tribe to honor themselves with the nickname, then it ought to be good enough for Atlanta to honor them with the baseball team nickname.

I’m fine with eliminating the stereotypes like the war chant, the trite “Indian” references, and such, but the name should be allowed to stay.

There’s common ground for Braves and Chiefs I believe. For example look at the Golden State Warriors. They rebranded away completely from Native American imagery and I don’t really see anyone mention them.

At the same time, though, Marquette felt pressured to change their nickname entirely, from Warriors to Golden Eagles.

You’re right that the team and the Cherokee nation can find common ground with the nickname. I think it largely depends on how agreeable the team management is with the manner it presents their name and imagery.

How about for Braves they go with a patroitic Native American? :)

I think Braves, Chiefs, etc. can stay if they work with Native American groups. To me there was no saving "Redskins" and honestly it's a bit embarrassing that it didn't happen a long time ago. . I think Indians was just too closely associated with the logo they tried to distance themselves with so to me changing it is the right call.

Just me personally but I think the reaction to the changing is more ridiculous than the change. If you quit watching Washington because they aren't the "Redskins" anymore, then maybe you weren't that big of a fan. Sure some of this can go too far but at the same time I really think you'll be ok. I thought the Bullets changing to Wizards was a bit silly but it's not like I didn't get used to it and now I don't think about it anymore. I don't get triggered that St. John's aren't the "Redmen" anymore.

Lol....I just can't take the FF anymore.

Look I get upsets happen and all, but to watch people take the Vandy win and then argue that we definitely ARE going to beat TAMU.....I just can't. I know the people doing are just the typical "saying it in case it happens so I can say I called it", but a few are taking it way too far. Things like "Now that we have a QB"....I'm sorry, did I miss where Bailey has shown he's the next Peyton Manning and alone can overcome every bad area on this team? Bailey is better than JG.....a very low bar to clear.

I am a person who thinks that the fixing the QB position would go a long way in winning more games. I never played football, but if you break down the games the last two years, you see JG missing open receivers, making the wrong reads, and turning the ball over and to scores for the opponent. While there are many on a team, the QB position can really hurt or help your program. I would just like to see how our defense would have reacted if he doesn't throw 2 picks against UK, can't complete drives in the redzone against BYU (last year) and Arkansas this year, and doesn't throw a pick 6 against Auburn. While we do have other areas to improve, it's human nature to be let down and not give max effort when your teammate makes the same mistake over and over again. JMO.

They have already recruited over Bailey. That's why the have been so reluctant to use him.

No its not. He was in quarantine for most of fall camp. I know a couple whose grandson is a team manager, and they said the managers were trying to help him out with the playbook halfway through the year. Because he missed so much time, the staff prioritized giving reps to others. That's why they have been reluctant to use him.

There is three reasons:

.

3) They want minorities (who are very prevalent in the two major college sports) to shut just up and be grateful for what they have and stop causing a big fuss and stop ruining “their” sports.
just stop

Everything in the world doesn’t come down to race. Ridiculous post

Yes it actually is a factor. There’s a significant portion of people who believe that minorities should be grateful for what they have and stop bitching about whatever problems or issues they may have. A common saying will be “God it’s better than it used to be, why can’t you stop complaining.” Or “you already get free room and board, why do you need more to be grateful for what you have.”

It’s more a old/young thing as I mentioned in the first part but there’s still people who believe minorities should just “shut up and dribble” which was very prevalent in 2020. You might not think that way and that’s good. But it’s still prevalent and a factor.

For you to paint a broad brush and suggest that because I am against the transfer rule is in some way related to race is irresponsible and out of line

Where did I say that you are? Did you not see reason #2 before reason #3?

Then what’s the definition?

Amateur means I can be compensated with a strict set of things the NCAA deems permissible (where the values are arbitrary), but just not money?

How convenient for them.
Amazing to me that folks don't understand how amateur and professional sport differ. Everything is about $$$ to today's young generation, sad I think.

1) Every “older generation” (not everyone but the majority) just wants to keep things the way it is and get jealous when the younger generation gets treated better or different. Or they can’t change their view even in the face of logic. This happens for every generation and goes outside sports as well.

I read all 3 of your reasons and none fit me
your broad brush wasn’t appropriate

Well we weren’t talking about the transfer rule, we were talking about name and likeness profitability. I used the transfer rule as an example. If you have a different reason why you don’t believe athletes should be able to profit off their name and likeness I’d be glad to debunk that too.

Did I mention anything about race and the transfer rule in the OP? No, I specifically was talking about profitability for players using their name and likeness and how race can play a part. In my second point, I used the transfer rule as an example of people who don’t want college sports to become more like professional sports with the movement of players like free agency. There was no talk of race and the transfer rule in point #2.

Somehow you inferred this to me equating of people that don’t support the transfer rules to people potentially being racist. Which I never said or implied.

the shut up and dribble thought is way more than about race. Sure there may be a very very small percentage that have a racist view tor it but there are two main reasons some people want athletes to shut up and dribble

1) most people don’t want their sports and politics to mix. They don’t want to hear views even if they agree because they want an escape from it all with their sports

2) in today’s world many people simply cant view athletes as real people. It’s why I’ve argued for years on here it takes real scum to tweet at a players family regarding their poor play. Many People have lost all touch with the human side of sports and thus don’t want to think of athletes having real world views

neither of those things have anything to do with race

1) You and I will disagree about a very very small percentage. I used to agree with that but the last few years have shown to me it’s a higher percentage. Not even “Minorities don’t deserve equality” type thinking, which is racist. But more of the thinking that they already get a lot anyways, why can’t they just be grateful even if people don’t outwardly admit it and stop complaining. Because “it’s better than it used to be”. I see it in my own family even.

2) I don’t really want my sports and politics mixing and some of it makes me roll my eyes (when the NBA stopped playing after the shooting of Jacob Blake I said on here I opposed it for example) but in a situation like name and likeness you can’t have a discussion without the other because it’s a right that only NCAA athletes don’t get it. And that’s not fair.

3) we agree completely on the social media aspect of it.

I’ll allow @BruinVol to get in the last word and then I’ll stop cluttering up the thread and get it a little more focused lol
