The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Have you seen who the sport’s titans have been getting as head coaches? Timing and finances worked great for Michigan getting May, and they're obviously playing quite well this year, but let's not pretend that there are a bunch of proven A+ hires waiting in the wings.

UNC: Assistant with no head coaching experience
Duke: Assistant with no head coaching experience
Kentucky: Head coach of BYU
UConn: Head coach of URI

Kim English doesn't have a litany of Final Fours but has been a solid coach in the A10 and Big East. He's absolutely going to get a look when Barnes steps down.
It depends on what he does between now and then. Currently he wouldn't even be a candidate.

Unless the athletic department completely turns over, or he starts winning at an undeniable level, he will not be getting a look here.

This is my hate coming through but I'm starting to get angry that a year that seems like may be big for us that Auburn is also very good and right now at least is probably better. The only good thing right now is historically Pearl's best teams usually are ones that flew under the radar a bit and his best teams usually fall short.

I just don't want another '18-19 where we have a great season and little to show for it and Auburn ends up in the Final Four again. At least that Auburn team got hot at the end and wasn't great the whole year. Here's hoping typical Pearl happens again and they get upset early. Or better yet some scandal hits and their season falls apart.

Have you seen Auburn hit a 3 and raise their shirts up like they are flashing their imaginary gun ? A scandal or a major choke job is coming, I promise you. Hell, they already had to abort a plane ride because of fighting

How early is too early to get the seed watch thread going?

@bleedingTNorange started it 1/27/2024 for the last NCAAT, but 2024 was a leap year. So 1/25/25.

I kinda wanted to see Barnes pass Mears for most wins at UT, but he’d need at least 2 more seasons after this one to have a shot…doubt he’ll stay.

Why? He sure looks like he has the energy of someone much younger. He's healthy and fit. It wouldn't surprise me if Barnes stays for another 5, including the current year.

70 and turns 71 in July. He might coach until he’s 80 for all I know, just wouldn’t be surprised if he hangs it up in the next year or two.

Think it’s a “season by season” thing at this point for him.

If he doesn’t retire this off-season, he may actually stick around another 5 years. He said on a podcast (paraphrasing) that he’s done coaching teams that he doesn’t think can win it all. With all of the turnover this upcoming off-season, next year is going to be a huge rebuild. If that doesn’t deter him, he’ll probably have a more stable team the following season so I’d expect him back then.

Yeah, also thinking that could be the case.

I want him here, just thinking he retires before surpassing Mears is all.

I think whenever he retires, it will be announced before a season starts that it's happening at the end of that season. Barring a major health issue with him or his spouse, I don't see him announcing it late in a season.

Think the same thing, he’s gonna give as much notice as possible. Give the AD plenty of time to work a candidate list out so they can move quickly once the season ends.

I said the same thing to myself. I guess Tennessee staying put doesn't generate interest or clicks. And I don't even necessarily disagree with their reasoning about Auburn's case for #1, but Tennessee has done everything that's been asked of them to this point. They have two true road wins over P4 teams, a neutral site win over Baylor, and are 4-0 against the ACC. The extent of the ease of our schedule is being pretty exaggerated. Dropping then without losing a game is really nonsensical. We've not even struggled or slipped up against some of these lesser teams...we've blown them out.

It's especially silly when you consider how Houston and Gonzaga have both stayed at #1 for extended periods while playing meh schedules.

I think surpassing Mears and being the winningest coach is something he’d like to do and is aware of

I actually won’t be surprised if he pulled a Bennett, which would suck

I think Tennessee fans would be furious, but idc, I would love if we took a look at Bucky McMillan at Samford after Barnes retires. Coaches a similar style to Kim Caldwell, young, has had success at a small school albeit but one that has virtually no significant basketball success historically

Ben McCollum at Drake has a Kim Caldwell-like resume, too

This long stretch around Christmas has been rough (especially after the Ohio State beating in football)

Hope Bishop, Felix, Mashack and rest of the guys got some rest and recovery in and are 100%. If everyone is healthy we'll only have 9 scholarship players...the good news is 12 games are in the books, but that's still a short bench for 20+ to finish the season. Not impossible, but missing 4 additional scholarship players just makes it harder to get good practice reps in.

It will have one benefit though, individual work will have a bit more focus with less bodies to work with.
