I don’t buy this at all. I’m sorry. It’s just cover. NIL, agents, the transfer portal, the changing landscape, none of that is new. It’s been around all off-season and for a few years now. You don’t bail on your team a few weeks before the season starts and leave them with no coach because you don’t like the direction of college basketball.

He could have retired in April if he hated it so much. There is more to this story. Maybe we never hear it, but saying it’s about NIL is just a cover.

I absolutely believe it is NIL and lack of regulation. Being a college coach of professionally paid kids with little regulation, and kids that are still teenagers and early 20's and so are even more unpredictable than they were before NIL...has to be awfully tiring. And when you have the money to walk away from the madness, then why not?

Because none of what he is experiencing two weeks before tip off is new. He has an entire off-season to mull over the state of college basketball and he decided two weeks before the season starts to abandon his team. I’m not saying that those factors played zero role in his decision, but there is clearly more to the story.

Maybe he knew 6 months ago but he wanted his assistant coach to get the job and wanted to strong arm Virginia into giving him the opportunity. Who knows. I just know it can’t be as simple as “I don’t like NIL” because that isn’t a new thing.

Agreed.

I agree. I smell something else going on here. Extremely out of character for Bennett. If it was NIL, he could have resigned after last season and not left Virginia in a terrible position. Half the team may transfer now. If it truly is because of his not liking NIL and the portal, then he doesn’t have the character I thought he had.
