The Official #9 Tennessee @ #8 Ohio State Game Thread, 8:00 PM ET, ABC/ESPN

Heupel: " We got to play better, we got to coach better.........at the end of the day, we got to continue to grow"

Same ole......Coach, at the end of the day, it's the end of the day. I want to know specifically how you are going to fix the horrible defense and pathetic offense we saw on the field tonight?

Maybe it would help to design some passing routes and use downfield passes next year. Get some real WRs, a genuine OC, a decent OL coach and some players who can do more than lie on the ground like it's a hospital ward, a DB coach and open spring practice with QB competition. And try to get some LB help in the portal.

And maybe no more "anywhere anytime" talk unless you can back it up.

It was more than just 5 things with this team.

* many times they had a hard time rushing the passer

* overall the receiving corp was the weakest of the Heupel era

* defensive line seemed to give up multiple times this season to be highly regarded

* we haven't had more than 3- 4 reliable LBs in a season since Heupel has been here

*Bru didn't all of a sudden get worse this year. Maybe it was not being delivered like in the past.

*the TE game was on a milk carton tonight

*there is no creativity to the RB out of the backfield

*apparently we didn't have the personnel to even run a reverse

*what happened to the exotic blitz packages. It was clear we needed them after the first drive

Fire Heupel...

On a serious note, I am not confident that we could find something as good as Heupel. Tennessee just isn't an elite football program. Tennessee is a decent one but not great. We would need a Nick Saban or Bob Neyland type coach to walk in the door to change that and that isn't happening.
No one said fire Huepel but don't expect any championships. We need to be realistic and set out goals lower. Its not a good time to change coaches as it has become a money competition.

This is the same speech every time. It definitely won't win any awards for originality. Even his pregame interviews are the same.

Why pay all this $ to coaches to look completely unprepared for a playoff game? I didn’t expect we’d win but I hoped they would least show up and play hard.

Just f n pathetic, nauseating hot garbage.

Completely outclassed in talent & coaching.

I’d almost Tenn stop playing football and invest the $ in other sports.
Football funds everything else. But maybe just go through the motions and get the TV paycheck and invest it all in baseball and basketball.

Agree but that starts with not talking trash all the time. I think the fans that talk smack do us a disfavor. Sure other fans start crap as well but frankly, we have no reason to talk trash about Ohio State and tearing down goal posts or planting flags. Ohio State was a BETTER program than Tennessee. They have continually been in the top 10 over the last 20 years.

Georgia and Alabama are better programs. Frankly, I want to stop playing Georgia. Sick of them and their fans. Sick of the Uncle Lous, etc. They are right, we are a mediocre program. Move on. We probably won't beat Georgia any time soon as well.

Not that high. I’d guess 14-17.
I can’t see them dropping the 12 playoff teams below 12 at worst (they’ve spent the last 10 years keeping the four playoff teams in the top 4-5-6 or so spots regardless of how the games actually went).

And with Tennessee currently at 6 and 7, Indiana (who was 9th in both polls) losing, and Alabama currently being around 11th…I can’t see the Vols dropping that far. That would be an 8-11 spot drop in the AP and Coaches Polls for this game.

Huepel is a good administrator, average recruiter and an average coach. Better than his recent predecessors but not a championship level guy. The entire staff was hosed tonight. This team never played a complete 20 minutes all season. A ton of wasted talent on the field. Is that 5 or 6 games with zero first quarter points, hard to remember.
I'd say the main difference between Heupel and his recent predecessors, is that he's capable of beating the likes of Florida and Alabama when they have a down year, and win 'most' of the games he should win, against equal or lesser talent.

He's definitely an improvement, but if we have to peg our season on our opponents having a bad years to find success, then we need to accept our place as a middling SEC team.

Time for the AD to step up for the good of the program and force Heupel into upgrading all his coordinators and position coaches. Also be a good idea to open up a QB competition in camp. Next year is going to be a lot tougher with Bama and Florida both being road games. With no changes, things are going to get ugly and quick. Syracuse is a neutral field game in primetime.

Man what a rough night.
What you hope in enduring an absolutely embarrassing loss like we did tonight is some major changes are made. At the very least it's time for some of Heupel's coaching staff to be replaced. Maybe we get worse? That's a chance you have to take to try and get better.
Or, you just keep things the same and you get what we got tonight. This wasn't just one bad game, it was a reflection of our season. Very fortunate to have even made the playoffs. Kinda backed our way into them.

Well that sucked.

We were out coached
out played
lost on penalties
lost on injuries

What disappoints me the most is that we didn't run the ball early. We do that and everything else falls into place.
We need some WR speed in the portal/LB upgrades/OL studs/best available otherwise

Still a pretty good season. And we still aren't on the elite level of talent that AL/UGA/OSU has just yet. Those programs don't have 3* kids unless they are LS.

Not that anyone cares but
This will be my last post after 10 years.

The paying fans deserved a lot better than what they got tonight from the coaches and team.

We are behind 2 steps and will stay behind 2 steps in this money game. It seems like we are busting it in recruiting compared to past years but when you look around we are middle of the pack in the SEC. The bar is being raised each year and we are so far behind there is no way to catch up. This game is a good example as we were manhandled on both sides of the LOS, thinking we had a strong defense. They were throwing our defense line around like rag dolls. The offensive line was pancaked. Where do you start? You are forced to decrease expectations.

I know it's disappointing but we could have a Jones,,Dooley,, Pruitt coaching us. We
Ought to be Thankful for Heupel.
On one hand I get people that say this.
On the other, I agree with the ones that expect more from Heupel.
Personally, I just want us to be competitive and things moving towards excellence. Problem is I am seeing signs of regressing. What if Heupel goes 9-3 next year and misses the playoffs?
Are we just happy to be a middling SEC team??

Bama is raising hell about their 9-3 season. OSU wanted to fire Day for losing to Michigan.
The top teams do not accept mediocrity, and I don't think we should either.
People may say but UT isn't a top team, and I would say it's precisely that mindset (we are just happy to be good ) that keeps us from being great.
We have the fans, history, and the NIL $ to be a top team. In my opinion, that should be our expectations.
At the very least, some supporting coaching changes need to be made. My two cents.....
