The Official NCAA Selection Show Thread (Monday May 27 NOON EST ESPN2 )

All those teams actually had a winning record in conference so yeah I would much prefer that than 5 13-17 teams.

If you want a worse tournament, sure. I'm not trying to white knight for the SEC, as I said, Florida should have been left out. But this probably isn't the year to act like the Committee has done their worst job. The bubble was tiny, almost no bid stealers this year, and only a handful of teams could make an argument they even deserved to be in the conversation to make the tournament.

Theoretically, you would think that would be the case. But on the flip side, if you’re the #1 overall seed, it really shouldn’t matter unless they really screw up the seeding. We should be good enough to beat anyone in a regional. The Supers is where it can get a little hairy and I think they definitely went with the storyline of TN-Wake. ECU got screwed with their 2-seed in Wake Forest, there’s no way Wake should’ve been in that spot outside of pairing them with the Vols and maybe the geography aspect of the selection process.
If they actually seeded the field on an S curve then Wake is where they should be. They’re the highest RPI team not hosting which means they should be with the next closest seed in front of them. As far as seeding goes, 1 gets lowest 2 seed (i.e. 32) 2 gets 31….16 gets 17 (ECU vs Wake).

@VolPack22 who do you think should’ve made the field and who do you think made it but wasn’t deserving?
Honest question, as I’m gonna research your response and may look at it differently afterwards.
You know me, I’m open minded and willing to listen.
Right now I’m in the camp that the SEC is the dominant conference and it’s not even close, and the number of teams is justified...for the most part.
It’s not even a SEC issue really. It’s a NCAA selection committee issue. Florida is the most undeserving team to ever make the tournament imo. Coastal Carolina didn’t deserve to get in either. Even their coach was talking like the season and his career was over after they got put out in their tournament. Charleston finishes 21-5 in their conference but couldn’t even make a spot all because they make their championship game and lose? That’s disappointing. Georgia Southern finishes 17-13 and Troy finishes 18-12 in the Sun Belt which ranked 5th as a conference in the RPI. They both had better records than Coastal Carolina who play in the same conference but they can’t sniff the tournament? What are we doing? Oh yeah it’s because the teams that got in that were questionable had guys on the committee lobbying for them. They probably all colluded and said “if you put my team in I will vote for all of your teams.” I’m sure there are several more but these are the ones that come to mind that don’t seem fair.

It’s already a worse tournament whenever they let teams get auto bids regardless of record. But let’s reward a team that’s 1 game over .500 with an at large bid lol

It seems you are just really mad that Florida got in. I've said multiple times Florida probably deserved to be left out.

Coastal played Indiana, Duke, Illinois, Cincy, Campbell, Michigan, Wake Forest, UNC, NC State, UNCW, and Creighton out of conference. They beat Illinois, Cincy, Campbell, swept Michigan, UNCW, UNC, and Wake Forest. It’s as simple as that.

So they can beat all those teams but can’t beat up on their own conference? Next.

I’m not sure how to discuss this if you don’t consider the data. They also beat Georgia Southern 2 out of 3 (so they beat them on the field) and a ranked Louisiana 2 out of 3. They had one less conference win than Georgia Southern but had the #3 out of conference SOS and #11 RPI. They played tough teams instead of just stacking wins against easy teams. This isn’t difficult. Not all records are equal.

Also, with the unbalanced schedule, Coastal played a series against Troy while Georgia Southern played a series against Arkansas State. Arkansas State was terrible while Troy was top 60. Coastal has a better conference record if they get Arkansas State🤷‍♂️ That’s why you can can’t just go on conference record. Every team plays a different conference schedule.

Florida got swept by Missouri who didn’t even make the SECT and finished 102nd in RPI. You can’t even win a single game! 6 losses to 100 RPI or worse. We only lost one such game last year. And let’s not forget this team was predicted to win the SEC East. I’m sorry but if you get swept by a team like that you don’t deserve to make the tournament. And before any of y’all want to point out our being swept by Missouri last season, Missouri did in fact at least make the SECT and finished 49th in RPI. HUGE difference. This committee lost all credibility by letting them in. Sorry not sorry 🤷‍♂️

You are moving the goalposts. No one is really arguing about Florida. But the other ones you mentioned are supported by the data. You can’t just look at wins- you have to look deeper at the data. Just like above.

Ok let’s talk about the almighty SOS it is to use that as the biggest determining factor according to the selection committee this year. How is it considered stacking wins whenever you play within the same conference? The same conference that was rated 5th in RPI? Coastal finished with a worse record in the same conference as both Southern and Troy. No way Coastal should have gotten in while those two get left out. So by your method of madness, Ole Miss should get in over Indiana State or Oregon State then because Ole Miss had the 2nd ranked overall SOS and Indiana State had the 75th and Oregon State had the 78th? The committee just wants to pick and choose which criteria they want to use whenever it best suits them. Plain and simple.

And you have to look at the people on the committee who had teams on the bubble. What a coincidence those teams got in…

Exactly this. Seeds 13-15 are way out west, seed 12 is in the ACC. Seed 11 is Stillwater, Seed 10 is in the ACC and seed 9 is Norman. So if not ECU, you are still sending Wake pretty far west and then is it fair to OK St or OK to have a 2 seed with a higher RPI than them? WF is rightwhere they should be. Being across from us is just the cherry on top for the committe.

Funny how the coach that now coaches Charleston got fired after a 13-17 season at South Carolina and now he finishes 21-5 in his new conference but he gets left out while five 13-17 coaches get rewarded and praised. Man this is wild the lengths some y’all go to in order to defend mediocre teams lol

I hope Wake wins the Greenville regional. Bring Chase on and the Deacons. The night Burns takes the bump against the Vols will be epic. The attendance record at LNS will be shattered. Just take care of our regional and see where the chips fall. Go Vols and in Tony V we trust!

One of those mediocre teams just took us to the wire, another one of those mediocre teams took 3 out of 4 from #2 seed UK and beat #5 seed Arkansas. I would wager CofC isn’t winning 4 out of those 5 games.

Guess we will never know because they weren’t afforded the opportunity even though they won their conference while those two teams finished 10th and 11th in their conference. Crazy how all it takes is one week of baseball to change people’s minds whenever we saw how they looked over a 30 game schedule. LSU was considered a bubble team going into the SECT and all because they won 4 games (2 against the 10 seed mind you) in 1 week they are now magically a 2 seed.

Can we all agree that the problem really lies in the fact that not enough people are watching college baseball, which allows these shenanigans to happen? VP, you do have a very valid argument and if this were basketball, people would be raising hell, including the talking heads on ESPN. Instead, this topic is buried in the baseball forum on VolNation.
