As long as humans are left to be in charge of selecting teams there will always be biased decisions. We were always told that RPI was the biggest factor in selecting teams but now it is strength of schedule all the sudden. I’m being serious whenever I say if Florida was so deserving with their SOS then why wasn’t Ole Miss? They had the 2nd SOS and only finished 2 games back and 2 spots back in RPI along with 1 less Q1 win. Florida wasn’t even a bubble team in the committee’s eyes so Ole Miss should have been in based on the criteria they used. Next year it will be head to head. The year after it will be your record in day games vs nights games. The year after it will be run differential. The next year will be how many bat flips you do. They will always pick and choose what to use to make an argument for their team to get in and if they run out of arguments they make a gentleman’s agreement to vote for each other’s teams. Can we all agree that the problem really lies in the fact that not enough people are watching college baseball, which allows these shenanigans to happen? VP, you do have a very valid argument and if this were basketball, people would be raising hell, including the talking heads on ESPN. Instead, this topic is buried in the baseball forum on VolNation.
Would you rather face a 41-18 Wofford team or a 28-27 Florida team?As long as humans are left to be in charge of selecting teams there will always be biased decisions. It’s a slap to the face for true baseball fans. Everyone knows they didn’t deserve to make it and the entire system needs a complete overhaul. Not sure if this was posted already, but Florida wasn't even listed in the Last 4 in, meaning not only did they get in, but they were safely in. That's crazy. No team that's 1 game above .500 should ever get an at-large bid. Watch them go on some stupid lucky run now.
Also the names come into play. Who puts butts in the seats at a Regional Florida or Pittsburgh who should've got in.It’s a slap to the face for true baseball fans. Everyone knows they didn’t deserve to make it and the entire system needs a complete overhaul.
If it’s a question of playing a SEC team or someone else the answer is always “someone else” just purely based on familiarity and usually having to play them in the regular season or meeting in the SECT. Wofford hasn’t played us so I would feel a lot more comfortable with them. It’s the same way in any sport. The more you play a team the more intel you have on them. Would you rather your Dolphins play the Bills in the playoffs or another team? Even though they are choke artists, you always want to avoid the team in your conference/division until the last possible chance.Would you rather face a 41-18 Wofford team or a 28-27 Florida team?
I’d rather see that 40 win Wofford squad.
I don't know about a complete overhaul, but my major concerns are:It’s a slap to the face for true baseball fans. Everyone knows they didn’t deserve to make it and the entire system needs a complete overhaul.
The regionals are set up so teams from the same conference aren’t in the same regional anyway so it’s sort of a moot point for the NCAA regionals. I think for CobbWebb’s hypothetical imagine you are someone like Arizona who has seen neither. CW says he would rather play Wofford. Well Wofford only went 12-8 in their conference and had the 224th ranked non conference SOS so I think that’s a no brainer. There were 4 teams with a better SoCon record so it’s really a no brainer who you would want to play. LSU got a gift Game 1 matchup. Ole Miss has an overall losing record which makes them ineligible for an at large bid. RPI, SOS and all that other stuff is rendered moot. Auburn only won 8 conference games. Historically, for the SEC the “floor” has been 13 conference wins (I believe one team made it in with 12 at one point). So despite SOS, RPI and all those other things, there ARE some criteria related to overall wins and conference wins. Obviously, not everyone agrees. Some feel there is SEC bias and others feel the metrics prove the SEC is the strongest conference by far. Both are likely true.As long as humans are left to be in charge of selecting teams there will always be biased decisions. Yeah. Truthfully, I expected to see Wake across from us the moment Chase transferred. I figured it to be in the Supers but when they faltered, I thought they might actually even get stuck in our Region. When they sort of bounced back and we took over number 1, it became the committee’s dream. Makes perfect sense to put the highest ranked #2 with the 16 seed. I’m almost cyclical enough to believe that played a role in even GETTING ECU the 16 seed.Well Wofford only went 12-8 in their conference and had the 224th ranked non conference SOS so I think that’s a no brainer. My rebuttal is to get better. You know what type of teams you are playing so if you can’t even win 15 games then you don’t deserve to get in. So South Carolina was 13-17 with a 31st ranked RPI and 35-25 record in 2017 and they ended up firing their coach because they didn’t make the NCAAT. This was the year after they had just made a super regional. There were 4 SEC teams ranked in the top 10 and 7 in the top 25. So now we are rewarding teams for that type of record instead of firing the coach all because some selection committee thinks they are worthy of a spot? If going .500 or above in your conference was part of the criteria, the 5 SEC teams that are top 8 National seeds and Miss St. (who many thought should have been the 16 seed) would be the only teams to make the tourney. Usually, the SEC is more balanced than this year. But when 5 of the top 6 teams in the country are in one conference (and 4 of the other top 9 are in one other conference) you are going to have some REALLY good teams in those conferences that have losing records within the conference. It wouldn’t really be fair to be in the SEC and have to be top 16 in the country to make a tournament of 64 when the Big 10 Champs are number 50.
Now, we got screwed ourselves a couple of times in the past in all three major sports by “people in the room” so that is definitely a part of the problem.
The committee won’t even release their overall seedings outside of the top 16. That right there is a joke. There is no transparency and we only hear from these jokers once a year, they make some BS statement on which criteria they used and go on with their life. By comparison, at least the basketball committee releases their top 16 mid season and has the overall seed list released to the public. Baseball should be doing the same. And the CFP committee releases their weekly rankings. Make them actually do their job and watch the freaking games. If they can’t do that then these AD’s and VP’s shouldn’t be controlling the sport the way they do.Yeah. Truthfully, I expected to see Wake across from us the moment Chase transferred. Now, I was a bit surprised to see Southern Miss as our #2. I am of the opinion the #1 seed should be rewarded with the weakest #2 seed geography be damned. Make that team travel however far needed to play the #1. But then I realized “the storylines” are always going to trump “fair” and “makes sense”….
