The Officiating Thread - UGA

Most of those were legit calls that we would be screaming if we didn’t get. The home team is generally going to get some calls. We don’t beat Alabama in 2022 without the benefit of an extremely questionable pass interference call that set up our TD at the end of the game. If they had made that call against Tennessee I probably would have thrown my beer through the TV.

Bad look for the conference. Luckily the booth had the officials backs last night. I thought Kirk actually tried to do a decent job pointing out the offensive PI and the false start on Beck that didn’t get called. Georgia bias was pretty strong.

It’s not just Georgia though. Refs have a preconceived notion of who is supposed to win and they call the game that way unless you just blow the other team out. We let Georgia dictate the game offensively all night though. They had a couple of long drives in the second half. Banks is a great DC imo but last night is on him.
I don’t think we ever changed out of man coverage and it was an easy matchup to exploit our LBs with their TEs. Not sure why we can’t figure it out because this the exactly how UGA beat us in the last 2-3 games we’ve played. Also not sure it would’ve mattered anyway considering we didn’t pressure the QB even once…

As fans, we are consumers. Without consumers, players and officials do not have a job. It’s only a hobby. You have every right to dictate how other people earn your money.
Your only vote is with your money if attend or your eyeballs.

There's a reason I don't watch WWE. I prefer my entertainment to be unscripted. I don't even like most movies anymore.

If you believe college football is scripted and you still watch, that's fine if you enjoy the entertainment. If you believe it is, why bitch about it being scripted? Do you bitch about WWE too? Do you bitch at movies?...... "They're just saying lines that were written for them."

=-IF-= you believe it and still still watch it and STILL bitch about something you believe going in, I can't imagine it's a fun experience.

Georgia won the lines of scrimmage. Beck was never pressured. Ball game!
Not disagreeing but until the final 1.5min it was still a 1 score game. UGA was aided by bad calls and missed calls. Ignoring it helps no one while shedding light on the cases of bad officiating can impact how the CFP committee views this loss.

Question for anybody who knows the rule better than me…on Georgias second touchdown, shouldn’t it have been too many men in the backfield? Don’t think that it would’ve mattered but genuinely curious if I understand the rule. You had the qb, rb, fb, wr and it seems the offensive lineman lined up at te was off the ball.

That was just good play design. The OL was spread out wide, but was on the line of scrimmage. He was not an eligible receiver. But the formation had us really confused.

Scripted? Nah. I know that’s an on going joke/rumor about professional or college sports; but are the officials biased toward certain teams in certain situations? Absolutely. Last night was a prime example of that. And I’m not one to say that the “refs” cost us the game, because it’s a cheap cop out. But it doesn’t change the fact that several bad calls extended the two UGA drives that they scored on to beat us by 14.

That wasn't a fumble 100% of the time. An underhand forward toss is a pass
While I agree this is generally how it’s called I would like clarification. CJ Stroud (my fantasy qb) did the exact same thing last weekend and did NOT get credit for a passing TD. It was called a run and there was no later stat correction. But they give those TDs to mahomes all the time 🙄

There were bad calls. The facemask call was just not there. I don't believe they did that specifically to extend the drive.

I'll completely agree the SEC should lead the way in having full-time officials because I believe the quality of officiating in football and basketball and probably baseball (not a sport I follow closely at all) needs improvement.

I think THAT'S where the discussion should center, not "this call and that call were bad" but why aren't we treating officiating with more respect so we can get a better outcome.

The miss on Beck’s false start was inexcusable though. You could tell that our defense and even their offense line thought it was a false start as both sets of linemen didn’t even move for 2 seconds after the ball was snapped.

As an official in a major FBS game, you can’t miss that.

Georgia had a great gameplan for us but the Refs seemed to lean really towards UGA. Even the moron that is helping the broadcast team was heavily defending the refs. Strangest one of the night for me is when Kirk called out Beck moving before the snap and the guy immediately screamed you can have a player in motion. LOL

I agree. There are some very bad calls in most games I watch and one of the reasons I find it hard to watch the NBA is flopping/officiating and premier soccer is comically theatric.

So the problem with my "have professional officials" doesn't work in all high level sports either. I don't have a great solution but it is, after all, just games for me.

Were I more involved, a player or coach or TV executive.... someone with monetary skin in the game, I'd want the product to be presented at a higher level.

There is scripted and then there is rigged. Scripted insinuates that the actors are in on the fix. Rigged means that there are outside interferences against the outcome. I believe the players are doing everything they can to win the ball game within the written rules.

There are outside factors who decide whether the outcome of play is accepted or denied. That’s where college ball is at and there is no visible reason as to when they decide to intervene. Based on what I witness from week to week, I assume there are multiple players who have money driven reasons for the way games are called. Odds makers and conferences alike can greatly increase their wealth by dictating who gets the benefit of the whistle. If that is not the reality, then the tolerance of poor and inconsistent officiating does not make any sense.

On the other hand, I see irregularities within the NFL that leave me to believe that the games are scripted, which is why I go out of my way to boycott watching the game.

Officiating is awful in every game you watch nowadays for whatever reason. Basketball games are almost unwatchable.
The Texas Game that the water bottle episode was the Tell Tell of officiating to come with home crowds. Much less it was against Georgia of all teams.

Again, if I felt it was rigged, I'd not watch.

I've known pro wrestlers and it is essentially rigged, not completely scripted. Certain acts (someone coming in the ring, etc) are scripted but much of the action is kinda loosely worked out between the wrestlers with a known winner and a general idea of how long they'll entertain. Everyone in the organization is aware of what's going on.

That's where this breaks down for me in college football. Is Heupel aware? Is Kirby? Is UT? Is GA?

UT is handing out millions to Heupel for games they know are rigged? I know it's lucrative but in ALL THIS TIME that questionable calls have been going on....... no one has written that tell all book, kept the receipts, and exposed the charade?

Color me skeptical.

There has to be a logical explanation to the erratic calls on the field and the effort to keep it from being discussed publicly. Until the leagues can explain their incompetent officials, it doesn’t make any sense to keep quiet about it as a fan.

I’d be interested to see all the non-disclosure agreements written into a coach’s contract. There has to be something along those lines for the leagues to be able to fine a coach for speaking their minds without intervention from the state. That would be unconstitutional. Would you give up your fortune to get back at the refs?

But the refs themselves aren't well paid and that's where the receipts could be kept and an explosive book written.

Even with a non disclosure, you can only get so much out of a guy who reffed and rigged but has blown his marriage, house, etc. Screw it, I'm blowing the lid off this.

Never happened? I'm skeptical.

We don’t know that it never happened. You and I only know that we don’t remember seeing it.

I remember seeing referees having been caught tampering for people that they know personally. We just haven’t seen it proven for some person or group worth billions. Covering that up is as easy as paying Google to scrub it from internet searches or having a federal judge give a cease and desist order to a web host or publisher.

At this point, I want to say that I have never formally studied law and I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

There's far more money for the media like CNN, which has no sports interest to speak of, or print media to do a long, investigative piece on referee corruption than you could ever pay.

There's a whole lot of clicks and newspapers and magazines to be sold exposing corruption in college AND the Congress would likely want a piece of it as an investigation because they get their mugs on TV as "working for the people who pay good money to watch these games."

That’s true. I’d like to think our news outlets are too preoccupied with manipulating politics to care about our sports.

But I agree that I would expect the Washington Post or some other news agency to want to get their hands on a story like that. Maybe it’s too risky to touch with so many rabid fans such as ourselves. If Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post took down college football, you could believe that Amazon would lose billions in sales. Nobody in the establishment wants to be the tyrant who removed the circus while inflation and national debt are the hot topic in politics.
