The Ole Miss Black Bear

Any chance that someone finds Volunteers offensive in the future? I wouldn't think so, and it's not like it's just a Civil War thing, but sometimes I feel like people look for things to complain about.

...the British and possibly Mexicans? I dunno

I think using "Black" made things even worse. I know that it's the name for a type of bear, but why even go there? Either way, with Black Bear or Landshark it looks way too cartoonish. The bear reminds me of Smokey the Bear...they should go ahead and use Black Bear to promote forest fire prevention while they're at it.

Some things I've heard on my local radio (Sports 56 in Memphis) is the idea of having a live black bear in a cage stationed right behind the Away team's bench. I think that'd be hilarious, yet I doubt that would ever happen.

Someone once told me that Vols was racist because of the Civil War. I pointed out that the nickname dated to the war of 1812, Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War. Also, Davy Crockett was our mascot and he died at the Alamo.

isn't that almost what LSU does with their Tiger? (which i still think is a disaster waiting to happen one careless gameday)

I thought the laundry detergent box was surely Bama's second mascot. Either that, or the twins in the Hounds tooth Hats.

These guys might be offended of the word "bear" as well.

There aren't even black bears in Mississippi. The Ole Miss Armadillos would have been better

Yeah, so does Memphis. I just think having an actual bear in the stadium would be harder than having a tiger. But idk, maybe it would work out for them. I think having a real-live bear during the games could take away from the lameness of the mascot.

Auburn and Tennessee are the only two that have 2 mascots.

Alabama and now Mississippi have mascots that do not match their nickname. Alabama at leasts has the excuse that its hard to anthropomorphize Crimson Tide.
Bama has an elephant.

Agreed. When did people start referring to Tennessee as the Volunteer State? How long has it been the state nickname?

it seems to have been noted as "earned during the war of 1812"....so i guess somewhere between 1812-1814 or in the 5 or so years afterwards

People always laugh at Bama and Auburn for their two mascots. Is it strange that we have a dog? The reason I don't consider it as weird is because dogs are normal pets, and it's not something strange like an elephant.

But how many have dogs that don't match the nickname? Just wondering. Like I said, I like Smokey, and don't think it's that weird.

fair point, but i think i'd feel more weird about it if he actually appeared on our main logos rather than just a mascot by design (like....well the Titans' mascot i guess or probably a few more pro teams follow it too)
