Any chance that someone finds Volunteers offensive in the future? I wouldn't think so, and it's not like it's just a Civil War thing, but sometimes I feel like people look for things to complain about.
I think using "Black" made things even worse. I know that it's the name for a type of bear, but why even go there? Either way, with Black Bear or Landshark it looks way too cartoonish. The bear reminds me of Smokey the Bear...they should go ahead and use Black Bear to promote forest fire prevention while they're at it.
Some things I've heard on my local radio (Sports 56 in Memphis) is the idea of having a live black bear in a cage stationed right behind the Away team's bench. I think that'd be hilarious, yet I doubt that would ever happen.

isn't that almost what LSU does with their Tiger? (which i still think is a disaster waiting to happen one careless gameday)
Yeah, so does Memphis. I just think having an actual bear in the stadium would be harder than having a tiger. But idk, maybe it would work out for them. I think having a real-live bear during the games could take away from the lameness of the mascot.

Agreed. When did people start referring to Tennessee as the Volunteer State? How long has it been the state nickname?Someone once told me that Vols was racist because of the Civil War. I pointed out that the nickname dated to the war of 1812, Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War. Also, Davy Crockett was our mascot and he died at the Alamo.
But how many have dogs that don't match the nickname? Just wondering. Like I said, I like Smokey, and don't think it's that weird.
