Should have gone with Mr. Manning. It could be a guy in a suit with a big Archie head.

Initial reaction was that is more racially insensitive than col. reb. Bear looks like he has black face make up on. I never thought the old mascot was that big of deal.

To be honest, I'd be okay with it if there aren't any Civil War/Confederate symbols on the suit. If your mascot is Rebels and that's deemed okay, no reason an old man dressed up should offend anyone.

fair point, but i think i'd feel more weird about it if he actually appeared on our main logos rather than just a mascot by design (like....well the Titans' mascot i guess or probably a few more pro teams follow it too)
I understand what you're saying. We don't chant "Go Dogs" or anything like that.

Yeah, so does Memphis. I just think having an actual bear in the stadium would be harder than having a tiger. But idk, maybe it would work out for them. I think having a real-live bear during the games could take away from the lameness of the mascot.

Only if they release it into the stands.

It's thought that there are no actual wolverines in Michigan. There's only been one sighting in 200+years.

My guess would be their aren't too many Tigers in Louisiana, Alabama(not in any Elephants neither), and South Carolina.

The Trojans were a fictitious people who's city was burned to the ground...

Etc

I like it.

Given that I don't care either way but somehow .....it fits.

They just need to give it a real name.

I understand they had to change mascots due to southern racism or something, but I haven't followed it that closely. What exactly happened? Did someone sue the university, or did the university just get nervous they would get in trouble?

well they were a real people...just probably nothing like in the illiad or odyssey or mythology described them as (city more than likely was attacked, seized, and burned to acquire valuable position for trade routes or something along those lines, iirc from my greek archaeology class....but that Helen of Troy story stuff's all bull)
