The Ole Miss Black Bear

awesome

If I was an Ole Miss fan, I would've wanted the Hotty Toddy, as ridiculous as it looks. :eek:lol:

If they had picked the Hotty Toddy as their mascot, it would have strengthened their stereotype as a bunch of preps. :neener2:

Personally, I liked the black bear more than the other two mascot candidates. In my opinion though, they should have never chosen a new mascot. They should have just continued on without a mascot.

I was talking about the dual mascot, but I guess you wouldn't consider Crimson Tide a mascot.

I would love to see a "crimson tide" mascot...a woman in a REALLY bad mood and maybe a....well, I will leave the rest to the imagination.

while I think the decision was overall, in the best interest of the University...what a punk mascot..

the Rebel Black Bear...really? That's terrible...although not nearly as bad as the banana slugs or aardvarks.

I disagree. At least the banana slugs and aardvarks are unique and original. The Rebel Black Bears (or Black Bear Rebels?) is completely out of left field. They should just have a guy in a costume shaped like the state of Mississippi dancing around during the games.

Memphis State tried to change their name.............. but they're still Tiger High.

Rebels changed a mascot........but they're still Ol' Piss.

A rose by any other name..........(still smells)

Same song, different verse.

Well the LSU tigers got their nickname from a confederate Louisiana regiment nicknamed the "fighting tigers". The north Carolina tarheels got their nickname also from a confederate north Carolina regiment, the story go's that this NC regiment stood in there and faught in the battle like they had tar on their heels.... I think Alabama got the elephant mascot from a news paper article in the 1920,s describing them coming out of the tunnel like big red elephants. That's also so how they got the crimson tide nickname

Anyone else think that the "Black Bear" in the illustration provided by Ole Miss actually looks brown?

I am sure LSU fans will love to remind Rebel Black Bear fans for the foreseeable future that the only species of Black Bears found in MS is the Louisiana Black Bear. :D

Even worse will be Alabama's annual reminder to Ole Miss about the Alabama Black Snake.

Honestly, the Hotty Toddy mascot was my pick of the bunch. At least you could have made it seem like a guy in a suit had something to do with a Rebel, even if just a remote relation.

They need to go back to the drawing board with this. A bear isn't the least bit rebellious at all. Maybe have a younger version of a Colonel Reb mascot, without the hat and the 19th century wear.

Auburn and Tennessee are the only two that have 2 mascots.

Alabama and now Mississippi have mascots that do not match their nickname. Alabama at leasts has the excuse that its hard to anthropomorphize Crimson Tide.

they could have like a tampon or a Maxie pad.

Someone once told me that Vols was racist because of the Civil War. I pointed out that the nickname dated to the war of 1812, Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War. Also, Davy Crockett was our mascot and he died at the Alamo.

I thought the name Volunteers referred to the Volunteers who came down to Florida with Andrew Jackson to defeat the Seminole Indians.

Hopefully later on we can come down to Florida and do this again.
