The Pessimist Thread

I think 1/2 of these 3*'s will be bumped to 4* by the end of the year... CBJ has gotten to evaluate these players sooner than the scouting services or before they have come out with new rankings...Dormady was close to #600 in the nation,UT and Bama offered. He commited to UT as a 2*,at least on Rivals. He showed out at camps and moved up 325 places to a 4*. Does that make him a better or different player than he was when he camped at UT? No,but it makes me believe CBJ knows how to evaluate talent better than the recruiting services...2* Mosely and 3* Sutton also come to mind as players CBJ offered and it seems both are working out fine so far..

It means we are taking a full class of 25... maybe more. Also, the commit list will look a lot different in January. Its July, why are we worrying about numbers? We essentially have no idea what the staff is going to do. Did I foresee them putting a punter on scholarship? No. A Long Snapper? No. And I honestly did not expect a couple more of the guys to be takes.

IMO, these are guys who are takes whenever they choose to be a Vol.

Drew Richmond
Matthew Burrell
Kyle Phillips
Shy Tuttle
DJ Jones
Quarte Sapp
Montavious Atkinson
Rico McGraw
Van Jefferson

There is probably more guys. Just the main ones off the top of my head.

Ahhh.....Nailed it!
Drops the mike & walks off the stage!

What does it mean that we've accepted the commits of so many lesser rated prospects? Have we struck out with Shy Tuttle? Drew Richmond? Any number of prospects that many on here have been drooling over? When players I haven't heard of start committing to UT(and UT accepts), I get a little alarmed. We're now at 22 commits and not all of our needs are addressed. There's still a long way to go til NSD, but have we painted ourselves into a corner? I'm not a fan of taking a young man's commit with the idea of possibly chasing him off if bigger fish come along. Why tell some of these lesser rated prospects they have a spot when those big fish are still out there? Do the coaches know we aren't going to get these bigger fish? It's worrisome IMO.

And before I set off an uproar with those that will ultimately bash me as being negative, read the thread title. You don't have to respond to every thread on VN and there is an ignore function. I'm just curious if there are others who share my concern.

don't worry. weezer. Lots of us get caught up in a player's star rating. Those folks are letting rivals and ESPN tell them who is the best players, and they focus on a handful of highly touted names.

That is a lazy man's way of following recruiting. It is also why good coaches pretty much ignore star ratings. Some of the 5 star guys look good because they play for a powerhouse program, and the three star guy who might be better individual players do not. Some five stars are head cases, or their dream is to (believe it or not) wear a helmet with something other than a power T on it. (That makes them a real head case IMO) And there are some hard working three stars that have ability and potential the ratings gurus overlooked.

Since Butch Jones gets paid to worry about it, I will let him do my worrying for me. NSD is six months away so I am not counting recruits until they sign. It's July, not January. Way too early to have your panties in a wad over it.

We don't actually know what our NEEDS are. Just because a kid signs as one thing doesn't mean he won't be moved to another position. So taking kids at a position that we as a fan base might not think we need. Could possibly be because others are getting moved around and we need to refill that spot. Plus, some of these players could possibly be very underrated and fit CBJ's system perfectly. So with that being said, it all goes back to trusting the coaching staff, and I for one do. Keep up the good work CBJ. Love seeing recruits wanting to be here.

Richmond
Phillips
McGraw
Ordway
Tuttle
Jefferson

That's who we need to finish with and this will be an outstanding class.

Huh? My sarcasm meter broken? Did I miss something?

On 24/7 right now.....

Kentucky is #18
Arkansas is #31
UT is # 6

On Rivals....

Ky is #16
Arkansas #31
UT is #6

Holy crap we have the number 6 class on two services and there's a pessimist thread lol

I see our class finishing out with Richmond, Jefferson, Tuttle, Sap, Phillips, and another CB.

That means we are losing a couple current commits. It would be awesome if some ST guys and Bruce would accept a grayshirt/ PWO ( Though I believe that Bruce is NOT going to lose his spot, it's nice to think he might be willing to go that route).

This class has me very curious to see how it finishes out. In Butch I trust.

Some people just cant stand we are coming back so fast, just pisses them off so they cant start a chuckie thread, in a few years when we are kicking azz and taking names old chuckie will be kicking 60, then maybe that will stop them.:good!:

Based on average star rating we will get passed up by some schools if we don't get a few more highly ranked players. I trust that Butch will make that happen, but that will mean cutting bait with some current commits.

Edit: puts us in the 15-25 range based on last years rankings.

When new rankings come out, I bet some of our commits get a bump

Average star rating is stupid. A punter and long snapper will obviously lower ours, and it punishes bigger classes. UT could only take 10 **** players to have a 4.0 avg star rating, but that would not be a good class this year.

I thought they only take the top 20 recruits into consideration

Richmond should be the top priority on that list, he fills a big need and he's an instate kid.

They do for the ranking, but not avg star rating I'm pretty sure. Even if they only counted top 20, punters and kickers have been in a 20 man class. There are more 4 star skill position players than any other position, but if we got 4 more 4 star skill guys over 3 star guys at a position of need, its not a better class

So then get the 4* guys in positions of need like Bama does every year. It has been explained many, many, many times on this board that like it or not, the rankings correlate with success on the field. I am fairly optimistic that Butch will work it out.

It's not just today's commits, it's the entire class thus far. We now have 3 spots left. Our needs are more than 3 players. I would love to get the OT, but of more pressing need is another DT and LBs. I'd also love to get another DE, even with the DE that committed today, for depth reasons, but we don't have enough spots.

Sorry Weezer, but it is a numbers game. Historically, with a large sample size of data, there will be kids that change their minds between now and NSD. After all it is 7months for a lot of events to occur so all coaches have to over accept commitments. Don't be a worry wart. It will work out.

The worst case scenario is that we don't end up with the best players that we can possibly get and lose games because of that reason. Coaches get fired for losing games, not over recruiting.

We have 4 star in position of need, just like Bama. This Bama class is probably the best class ever assembled on paper so it's not a good judge. FSU had 10 ***, 9 ****, and 2 ***** in 2013. Was that a bad class? Ours will look rather similar. I guess FSU should have just taken 21 ****

Cam sutton was a 3*, should we run him off. I think the coaches get players that fit there system and have a upside to them. Let them judge the players ,Cam turned out pretty good.

I think there will definitely be some commits that will be asked to look elsewhere, it happens every year as the staff takes commitments early in the cycle only to uncover a recruit that they think would be a better fit for the program. These new recruits might not have much in terms of press due to the fact that they might not have gone to numerous camps, but the staff (at all schools) gets film of kids that aren't all over the camp circuit but that HS Coaches think would be a good college prospect. They fly somewhat under the radar and usually end up being "surprises" when they start showing out in Spring or Fall practices...guys like Moseley and Jakob Johnson.
