The Red Line: Part Deux

Yes, Arabian countries are attempting to diversify their economies, but I don't agree with this at all. Saudis can still control oil prices more than anyone. Just scale back production 25% and watch prices soar.

maybe in the short term but what if the US suddenly decided to take advantage of all the resources available within its borders? I've seen estimates that we could essentially be energy independent in 5-7 years. You don't think that concerns SA?

what happens to the oil producing countries when the US doesn't need them anymore?

Yes we could, of course that would mean getting the EPA and the courts out of the way to do it. So, not going to happen.

As for OPEC, they would just have to cut back on the G5s and Rolls Royce's.

Seeing as they sell oil in dollars, we will always need them. Without them, countries would have no need to use the dollar.

Although some oil producing countries have challenged that agreement recently.

Easy answer, Putin is thinking if Obozo can get a Nobel Peace prize, then I can. Plus Putin is making Obozo look like the clown he is.

It's a major PR win for Putin domestically. Today the headlines in the Russian version of Pravda include "Russia Has Saved the World". The article goes on to say that Russia is the real peacemaker in international affairs.

Putin looks like ghandi in comparison with ole Barry....

Maybe if you want to pay $8+ gallon for gasoline. Otherwise, it's not happening.

Even with declining demand and the "energy boom," we're still importing more than half our oil.

You miss the fact we export a great deal of oil ourselves. We also import a great deal of refined product due to our woeful lack of refining capability.

Build refineries and increase crude production and gas could maintain in the $3.00 range. Increasing our production just puts more oil on the world market.

Why of course they would say that. If not then it's off to Siberia for those who don't comply in a positive light to their fearless & shirtless Comrade King Putin.

Other countries can produce oil much more cheaply than we can?

Huh? We've been closing refineries because there's not enough demand.

COLUMN-Global overcapacity to squeeze oil refining margins: Campbell | Reuters

Not enough demand, are you seriously falling for that?

The reality is refiners do not want to put the needed (and unreasonable due to regulation) money into upgrades, expansion or new builds. Yes it is a manipulation by "big oil" but it is a manipulation supported and encouraged by draconian environmental regulation.

Want to put "big oil" in a pickle? Remove the obstacles in refining and production, take away their excuses.

We are importing gasoline, how do you get gas from crude?

According to the link above, they may be importing it in some areas because it's cheaper than shipping from Gulf refineries.

This also goes to point out that the whole energy independence talk is somewhat misleading. Oil is a global commodity, and American producers are going to sell it to the highest bidder. Building a pipeline just makes it easier for them to export gasoline abroad rather than saving American motorists money.

Even as a global commodity - more sources (and more stable sources) of supply put downward pressure on prices.
