The Runner's thread

Like a full 7 days off of running? I haven't, since I started in August.

A full week off would probably do you some good. If you can't stand not running for a week, only run 2-3x at half speed. Invite a gf or non runner friend to tag along to keep you from going to fast. Recovery is just as important as training

That makes a lot of sense. I may try that in either march or April.

Guys I'm getting really frustrated. Ran 2.75 today but had to stop twice for about a minute each. It's so hard getting back into running shape

I have found that sometimes working through that frustration actually makes you come out on the other side way better off. Stick with it SDV. You got this.

Thanks man. I have to stick with it. Took off for too long and have gotten way out of shape

Just keep pushing! Try mixing things up, find ways to motivate yourself, you got this. Just don't give up.

Whether you run 1 mile or 26.2, average a 10:00+ mile or a sub 6 mile, YOU ARE A RUNNER...

I appreciate it. I think I need to run slower to build up my stamina. I think my time will increase after that

it does work. I also add speed drills. They help increase stamina, speed and it is a great way to shed some quick pounds.

What kind of speed drills do you suggest

You could start with 30-60s. Sprint as fast as you can for 30 seconds and then walk for 60. Build yourself up to Sprinting for 30 seconds and slowing down to a jog. Then build yourself up to making it 60 second sprint, 120 second jog.

Do about 10-12 reps. You can DL some phone apps where you can set it to go off each time you're supposed to start and stop. I use the HIIT Interval App.

Make this part of your running routine once a week and you'll start to see results. It's a big time Army running drill.

God. I am going to start doing this.

Cool. Thanks! I'm going to try this. My 5k is Saturday. Think I should do it before or wait til after?

Did you run today? Maybe try it tomorrow, take Thursday off, do a light run Friday just to stay loose and go for it on Saturday. But you don't want to do anything that's goign to have you worn out and sore before you even hit the starting line Saturday. Listen to your body and don't overdo it. The adrenaline rush and excitement of the race will carry you quite a bit Saturday too.

Yeah I ran today. I'll try it tomorrow or Thursday.

Which template do I setup on the HIIT timer?

Ummm, what are the options?

It's been so long since I set it up I don't remember. I just have the options for "prep time" then a "work" and "rest" period, then it asks me how many rounds I want to go. Work would be the sprint and rest would be the walk/jog

I am worried that I didn't get up to 3 miles before the race. I started training a couple of weeks ago. This was a last minute decision.

At least you're out there. It'll set a base time that you can then train to beat. Always have a goal, it makes it easier IMO

I'm not only competitive with other people, but myself as well.

I think I figured it out
