The Runner's thread

Thanks very much, guys. I appreciate it.

VFB - I hope you do make the All American; I bet it's an incredible run. Are you running the full? I have a ton of respect for marathoners. Not sure if I'll ever take one of those on.

That's the goal. I honestly consider my XO a friend and he's running the marathon, as are some others in my Battalion. It's the first one so it will be cool do run it before I PCS in July. I was thinking about looking to see if there was a more appealing marathon, but I think this will just be too cool to say I've done, so I don't think I'm going to pass it up.

Ran 1.77 with Samus before dinner, then 5.02 alone after. I ran way too soon after dinner. I was okay for the 5k distance, then at that point I felt very lightheaded and everything went really dark. Rather scary.

11.4 miles so far in March.

I struggle with this mightily. In long runs, I have often have the runner's trots, even if I wait three or four hours between runs. It destroyed my time in first marathon last year. If anyone has tips for this, please let me know.

what did you eat? It could be a reaction from your white bloods not reacting due to your meal.

Pork, pasta and Brussels sprouts.

Am I in danger?

I have no idea. I'm not a doctor, but if you're having this type of reaction, I'd probably take some sort of light antihistamine. Try to find kiddiedoc floating around here and ask him.

Did you break out in hives Nerd? I have had this a couple times for unexplained reasons (no running was involved though) and a little benedryl knocked it out. Hope all is well.

I did my first trail run yesterday of 3 miles with wife and brother in law. We are getting ready to do our first 5k race in April. My times were slower than normal running with them, but the trail was nice and the weather was awesome.

If you get the trail running bug you will not want to do anything else. There is nothing like running through the woods on a nice summer morning.

Thanks for the concern folks. Still puffy, no hives but I was really itchy. I am just embarrassed by my stupidity. I didn't even give my food 30 minutes to settle. Lucky I didn't pass out. I gotta listen to my body better.

Glad you're feeling better, Nerd. I understand what you're saying around giving enough time after meals, but I gree with the others that the run probably had nothing to do with this. It does sound like an allergic reaction. If nothing you ate, it could have been something you ran through. Back when I was a kid a neighbor was burning out poision ivy and the smoke caused a severe allergic reaction (inhaling). I'm sure that wasn't the case for you, but there are strange ways to kick up allergic reactions.

I looked around google and apparently this can be the result of food combined with exercise.

That's interesting. Was not aware of that, outside food allergies. Did not realize the combination was a trigger.

Sounds like urticaria/angioedema. Can be triggered by a number of factors (foods, meds, infections, heat/cold, even pressure or friction). If you have any trouble breathing or swallowing, it can be an emergency. If it recurs, may want to talk to your doc or an allergist. I can recommend one, if it came to that.
