The Runner's thread

Had a buddy go through CrossFit certification and he was taught that during your regular pace you should be able to say 3-5 word statements with ease during your runs. Anything above that is running above your average pace. Also taught me the importance of shorter easy steps instead of trying to stride it out. Trying to lengthen your steps wears you out quicker and ruins your momentum because you lose the midfoot strike.

I feel like my stride is short but I haven't ever watched myself run before. My shoes seem to wear in the mid foot more than any other spot.

well played.

Off topic, but do you know anything about being an Army guy on a Navy base? I'll be in that situation come July.

I've only visited Navy bases, but they seem to be nicer than Army posts. I know their exchange is WAY better than our PX

I am pretty new to running. I used to lift for strength but I am having trouble with my shoulders. I have been running for two months pretty hard. I run every other day or more. My runs are up to 1.5 to 3 miles long. I was just looking for some advice about how frequently to run and improving speed versus distance.

Never run more than four days in a week and never more than three days in a row or you will increase your chance for injury.

Bill just posted a link to an article about tempo runs that has some pretty good info as far as speed.

Welcome to the club! I feel your pain -- I had surgery on my shoulder last fall... Damage from trying to lift more than I should for years and years.

I try to run three days a week. I only push the distance on my long weekend run. Example: I might run 3-4, 4, then 6-10. I mix in some pace work either with intervals or shorter faster distances.

I know some of that sounds vague (and is), but I just haven't felt the need to use a stringent program. Many training plans are available online.

Thanks for the advice. I am not a natural runner at all. Running has always been difficult for me, but I am seeing improvement. I usually just run about as hard as I can. I am not sure if this is the best way to get better at it. I want to both get faster and increase my distance. My fastest mile so far has been an 8:45.

The best way to increase both is to mix up your training. Two days a week or so go for distance and the other days work on speed. It's going to take some time but you can get there.

That feels like summer compared to what I ran in last night. Wind chill of single digits, I'm sure. I just barely got over a mile before I decided I'd had enough.

I don't enjoy running in the cold so I can't even begin to think what that must have been like.

Ran 2 miles Monday. Have shin splints for the first time ever (I blame running like a crazy person down the hills). Running in the Knoxville 5K this weekend. Will be my first time being on Shields-Watkins Field.

I also won the lottery for the Peachtree Road Race. This will be my second time participating. It's been roughly a year since I ran more than 5 miles at a time.

I'm going to sign up for the Bix 7 this year, since I'm not racing my mountain bike that weekend. It'll probably be my first road race, unless I do a 5k before that. I ran up the very steep hill it starts off on on Saturday night at a really good pace. I'm more worried about coming back down and it's usually one of the hottest days of the year.

Looks like fun. I raced on July 4 in Georgia and even though it was 7:30 in the morning it got hot fast. I think I used the water more for keeping cool than hydrated lol. Good luck with it.

Recommendation for the shin splints... ice for 20 mins before running and 20 mins after. It worked for me anyways.

I haven't heard of that app before. I use RunKeeper to track mine.

I typically don't use it either. I usually use the Nike run app but I saw an advertisement for CharityMiles and they're supposed to donate money to a charity of your choice for every mile you run, walk or bike.
