The Runner's thread

So, I've never run outside with a pace in mind. Any good tips for getting my pace right without the treadmill telling me how fast I'm going?

Easiest way is to buy a GPS watch. It will provide your pace.

A cheap inaccurate way is time yourself running a mile and pay attention to how you feel. Of course elevation, wind, food, hydration and energy all greatly affect this

How much do I need to spend on the watch? Any recommendations?

Garmin
TomTom
Nike +

I've owned a Garmin (220) and the Nike+. I like the Garmin a little more (lighter, quicker to get GPC lock). The Nike watch is cheaper (made by TomTom). Both are really good watches though.

I've ran with the GPS watches for 4 years. Still can't pace myself correctly. I fluctuate. I start slower, then around miles 3-6 I can pick it up, slow it back down again for a mile or two, then pick back up. I'm just weird though. Only thing it's good for is making sure I don't get too slow

Finished the half in 1:55. Came out of the gates way too fast. Ran the 8k faster today than yesterday, which was also too fast. Oh well. It's still all in good fun.

Watched the elite marathoners race through the halfway point after I finished today. Holy crap, those guys (and girls) are nuts. They were running effortlessly and completely relaxed, yet absolutely flying. I'm quite envious.

Just ran 4.4 at my "fast" pace (Ha! - I run by feel, not by the clock).

Story time - been on statins for moderately high cholesterol (220-240) for 5 years. Had continuous knee pain in my right knee for last several years. Running didn't make it worse but it never really got better either. Stopped the statin three weeks ago because I'm giving herbal therapy a try and also not sure my cholesterol level is really any kind of a problem. Knee pain completely stopped within 2 days and hasn't been back since.

So you run with your phone on you to check your pace or you just check after you're done running?

Map my run. You keep the volume up, and you can hear your splits at each mile. You can then go back and look after the run. It's free.

I keep Pandora on while running and just turn the volume up all the way. I don't use headphones. While Pandora is on, May My Run will still break in and tell splits.

I'm not running right now bit I was rocking the big Orange on a hike today.

Nice, where is that? I did 8 miles or so carrying my daughter over the weekend at Big South Fork, so I'm taking a couple days off, too.

5 on Saturday at 8:11 pace. Felt like I could go forever... probably should have. I love runs like that but at the same time I hate the feeling that I left something in the tank.

145 total for the year.

This. But, I do wear headphones. Armband for short runs, hydration belt pocket for long ones.

What hydration belt do you use? Did it take you a long time to get used to having the belt on?

Reason I ask is I just don't think I would be able to get used to having a belt on while I run.

Have you tried running based on heart rate instead of pace?

My heart rate never gets too crazy. My resting heart rate is in the very low 40s. Always has been. I'm cardiovascularly fit, but I carry too much body fat for what my heart rates are. I can do a 7 minute mile and still not be at 90 BPM. I wouldn't know where to start on running based on heart rate..

Fuel Belt, doesn't bother me at all. I usually carry only two of the bottles (it holds 4), my phone, and my key. In the heat of summer, the extra capacity is nice, but four bottles gets a little clunky.

You should be able to run a 5k and go anaerobic the last 1-2 minutes. That should give you an idea of what your max hr is. Then you should know if you run at 80-85% of max you can hold that for at least an hour or longer depending on your training.

Nicely done.

man. been running a long time. used to power lift, now i view that whole deal as macho-wacho measuring contests for younger guys. traded in my SUV for a station wagon so to speak.

if i had time id get into doing some Nantahala type endurance stuff, take advantage of my strength training. (doing 300 pushups, Xtrain abs, 35-40 reverse grip pullups, and 25-30 full pullups, as well some very light high rep shoulder, very light arm lifts combining center angle pushups and chest exercises combined with a hybrid Pilates stretch and core regimin). id say that stuff complements after the 1.5 mile allow for a faster 2nd mile and so forth.

Id be happy as hell to even finish a half marathon. kudos to you sir. even walking thay distance is better than 75% of America can handle.

I may just have to man up and try one. May take some getting used to but it would be worth it in the end. Thanks for the info.

3.2 last night at 7:52 pace. Very flat course last night which accounts for the faster pace. I started out way too fast. Caused the end of the run to be much slower than it should have been.
