The Runner's thread

Can you guys suggest a good YouTube resource for instruction on proper running technique? I gave up running due to knee pain and a left calf reoccurring spasm. I've been reading Born To Run and realize that maybe I have never approached running with any respect to form or footwear and age exposed me. I would like to start from scratch and pretend that I have never run in my life and want to try it out for the first time.

I would suggest going to a running store and having someone check your foot strike and have them fit you for the correct shoes. That may help a lot. I always know when it's time for new shoes because my feet will start to hurt after a run. I go get new shoes and the pain will go away. There are other ways to tell when its time for new shoes but that's how I can tell. Good luck and post here often for support and training ideas.

Thank you for the encouragement. I'm going to try and begin in my Vibrams and see what that does for me. I'm afraid of running store prices!

I don't doubt you but why? I ran in them once and really enjoyed it.

Minimalist running takes experience, but can be done. If you're easing back into running, it might not be so bad. There's not as much support or guidance for your feet in Vibrams or other minimalists shoes and you'll likely feel the difference in your Achilles. Just be careful with it.

Those must be version 4, I have the 3s.

Indeed they are.

Well one of my downfalls is that I don't ease into anything. I just feel that starting back in minimalist shoes might be smarter than having to relearn running, twice. Or it may be dumb and dangerous. Ha

5.5 miles today. Calf muscle all but gave up between mile 3-4 and I had to walk most of that mile. I know in my head I shouldn't expect great results out of the gate, but it's hard to tell myself that while I'm out there struggling. Ready for running to be easier and fun again.

You can go to a running store and get fitted and then hunt around for price. I have found that the few running stores I have been in are pretty close in price to other shoe stores for the same shoes.

Because running barefoot takes a long time to get used to, gradually working it into your regular shoe regimen to prevent injury. I own a pair of Vibrams, but only use them as water shoes as I hated how I felt every rock/acorn/etc that I stepped on.

I bought a pair of five fingers in Afghanistan and loved them immediately. my adjustment period was fairly easy, but I'm a born and raised hillbilly. I'd rather be barefoot all the time. I've been in nothing but minimalist shoes since

Hey guys...I've got to get out more. Hang out in the FF and RF...had no idea there was a running thread. I'm a half marathoner with no plan...lol. I do my own training schedule and love hearing what others are doing. I'll be reading this thread all weekend to catch up!!

I have no training plan and run up to 50k. I attempted a 50 miler in July, but I had been injured and DNF at 25. Just ran a trail half two weeks ago and knocked off 24 minutes from last year's course time.

:hi: Welcome. Post often.

3 miles on Saturday with my wife and kids. We ran at a park that we haven't ever ran at before. It was about a .45 mile loop and some good hills in that loop.

3.5 last night. Weather was almost perfect for a run. Side note almost got hit by truck while running. Seemed like the jackwagon was almost aiming for me. Would have been a different story if he couldn't have gotten over but he/she had plenty of room to move over.
