The Runner's thread

9 hour endurance trail race today. Only ran 18 miles in 6.5 hours. Brutally hot and the course is ridiculously difficult. 3 people hit 50k.

Does anyone know if any of the local (Knoxville) running tracks are available for public use? I've read that high school tracks generally allow public use, but the Knoxville Track Club's website isn't very specific about which ones are open to the public.

I know it's boring running in a circle, but I'm more interested in the running surface. My old knees don't have to support as much weight as they used to, but running on paved surfaces all the time can't be good even for people in prime physical condition.

All of the public high schools in my area have open tracks for public use. Even one of the private colleges opens their track for public.

I ran an 11 minute mile today. Which is nothing special in the grand scheme of things but when you consider I'm 48 and I only just started running again 2 months ago, it's not too shabby.

Today's second mile was 11:30.

those are great splits though for just two months in. I wish I could get better at keeping my splits similar.

You'll keep getting better. It doesn't come back as fast as it did earlier in your life.

Technically I set a PR today. But that's because I've never ran a 17.76k before. That's 11.02 miles, although my watch (as well as others) read 10.9. The finisher's medal was pretty cool though.

25:17 PR this morning. About 30 seconds better, 17 seconds slower than I wanted but I'm totally okay with this for not running since the 9hr trail race.

Haven't ran in a good while (3 weeks or so), but I did a GoRuck Tough event Friday night. That was one of the hardest things I've done. It ended up being a little over 13 hours.

Ran the Chattanooga Heroes 5 mile walk/run this morning. 1 hour, 8 minutes. I finished 660th of the 1077 who completed the event. I ran the first 4 miles without stopping but struggled the 5th, but I was running when I crossed the finish line.

Not bad for someone who just started running again in mid-May.

Great work MG.

Ran a trail 5k today. 25:43

What happened to the VN runners? Summer get to everyone? I know I don't post a lot in here but I enjoy reading what others are doing.

Anyone have any races planned for the fall?

I've been out there. Got tons planned for the fall. Even running under water in two weeks... through the new midtown tunnel here in Hampton Roads. Smokey Mountain half in September, Crawlin Crab half and 8k, Wicked 10k and the Marine Corps Marathon in October, Harbor Lights Half and 5k in November.

Slowly getting my pace up to where I want it to be. My 5K time has dropped from 38:56 to 36:44 to 35:55.

That's still damn slow. I want to get down to between 8:30 and 9:00/mile. Faster if possible, but 7min/mile (my basic training pace) doesn't seem realistic.

That sounds like an awesome schedule. Good luck in all of your races. Let me know how the Marine Corps Marathon goes. That is one I would love to do one day.

We have some major projects going on at home right now that are probably the only thing keeping me from running my first marathon in the fall but I am planning on doing a small local half (Historic Hillsborough Half) and a 10k right now. Maybe I can add to it later.

It is a big improvement though. I found doing interval runs really helped me improve my speed. During those runs you won't break any records but you are getting your body used to running faster for small amounts of time and you can build on that.
