The Runner's thread

Finished 1st overall in the 5K this morning. 20:56

That's fast.

Some day I will get there.

Can I ask a few questions?

What is your Personal Best?

How old are you, are you faster now than you were let's say 5 or 10 years ago?

I'm 29, and I was curious as to when amateur runners sort of reach their peak. I imagine that I can keep improving my times for many years down the road.

My last 3 5+ mile runs have been getting faster. Today, I was averaging 11:30/mile. My last 4 mile splits dropping from 48 to 46:30 to 44:57 today. And that felt slow.

The cooler weather is really helping.

I love running from October through may. Some of my best runs have been in sub 40° weather.

18:17 (though it was about 1/4 mile short), I've broken 20 minutes twice. I'm 32. I only started running about 5 years ago (outside of the Army and timing) so I have no idea if I'm faster or not. In my experience though you can continue to get faster with the appropriate training.

Man thanks!

I've broke 21, but never 20. Yankee makes me jealous. I was my fastest at 33, got injured a year and a half ago at 34 and I haven't been the same. It's taking twice as much effort to get to where I was. But for the first time since that injury, it's finally comfortable and fun to run again. I'd experience runner's high, but only after I was finished. I'm hoping I'm finally turning a corner.

So I've been waking up and running a loop on the trails almost every morning before class. I'm so much more energetic the rest of the day when I do that.

1/2 marathon accomplished. My partner, Donna, and I participated in the Desmond Doss Memorial 4 Bridges Half Marathon today in Chattanooga.

We ran as a relay team. I ran the first segment, 6.5 miles in 1:15:01 an average pace of 11:31/mile. Donna ran a total of 7 miles at 1:30:46.

We're quite happy with the results. So much so that our plan next year is to run relay for the full marathon.

Ran a smooth, easy 10k on Saturday in 54 min and change. Why did I go easy? Because I didn't want to screw things up for my second Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, but I did anyway. Did a horrible job fueling myself and ran out of gas around mile 21 and suffered major cramping. Instead of finishing in the 4:15 ballpark, I barely beat 5 hours.

Ive been running pretty regularly for the past few months. Weekdays I have to push a double stroller with a 3yr old and a 1.5 year old. It's kinda convenient in the morning because I walk the 5yr old to school which is about a block from the house, then the 3 yr old has preschool about 1mi from the house 45min later. So I started just doing a timed 30min run through the neighborhood and finish a block or 2 away from the preschool to cool down.

It amazing how far I've come. On Aug 4 I only ran 1.85 mi in 30min for a 16:35min avg pace. This past Sunday I ran 3.2 mi at a 10:07 pace. It's quite addictive seeing that improvement (and losing 20lbs in the process).

Now that the mornings are getting colder I can't run with the kids, though. It's not cold for me but I'm running and raising my body temp. They are just sitting there with cold wind blowing on them. So now I'm just doing a little cross training at the house and running on the weekends without the stroller.

It sounded like a pretty hot day to be running a marathon. Congrats on the accomplishment even if you missed the time you were looking for.

It gets addicting. Between the weight loss and seeing your times improve, you really look forward to your next outing. You should consider signing up for competitive events.

I'm hoping to break into the sub 10min/mile in the next few weeks. I have the first of 4 straight weekend 5K races next Saturday (11/12). I didn't intend to have 4 races lined up like that. But 3.1 miles is pretty easy and at least two of my upcoming races include finisher's medals. They all include cool race swag like technical shirts and the Chattanooga Hungry Turkey race on the 26th gives out a really nice fleece pullover.

Anybody in Chattanooga have suggestions for places to run? Or groups to run with?

I run around Red Bank and downtown and of course the river walk but I'm getting tired of the same spots.

Knoxville had an extensive greenway system when I lived there and I could run for a week without crossing the same path but for whatever reason I get sick of Chattanooga's river walk.

I usually like to run on paved surfaces, mostly because I'm usually by myself and have this weird phobia of getting bit by a snake out in the middle of the woods.

I've finally broken the 10 min/mile barrier. At least for the first mile. Monday I ran a 9:51 and Wednesday I ran a 9:25. I can now pass the 2 mile run portion of the APFT. On Wednesday, my 2 mile split time was 19:24.

Nice Job MG. Keep up the good work!

Finished 3rd in my age group (45-49) at the Ft. Oglethorpe 5K. Official time was 31:25.

According to my Runtastic tracing I set Personal bests for 1 mile (9:14), 3 mile (29:09), and 5K (30:11).

Ran a PR 10k this weekend of 45:52. I have been working on speed and that distance so it was good to see the work pay off. Now I need to translate that to a new PR in the 1/2 marathon in March.

8:56 mile yesterday. Not sure I can keep that pace for my 5K on Saturday, but it feels good to know that my 48 year old body can still do it. On a more serious note, I've got to take a couple of days off. My left knee is protesting all this work.
