Calf muscle "popped" this morning at about 3 miles into a 4-mile run. Seeing a buddy who's a PT tomorrow, but just by talking about it on the phone he's estimating that I'm out 6-8 weeks....

Did it pop or feel like something hit it?

Well, initially it felt like I was hit by a rock, but my words to my running buddy were "...something popped." I think reality might be somewhere in between...maybe skewed a little to the feeling of being hit side of the equation.

Have you experienced this type of injury?

PT says it's a "significant tear" but doesn't think it's to the level of requiring surgery. Does want to do rehab, though, so that it heals with some flexibility instead of healing stiff.

Worst part? My last working day before I retire is July 14...this coming Friday. Now, I'll be on crutches for my first 3 weeks of retirement!! What a bummer!!

Mine felt like I got hit by a baseball. Tore my calf off the achilles. It was just shy of a full tear and they watched me for a month deciding on surgery. Fortunately, I healed enough to not reguire surgery. I was on crutches for a little over a month.

Couldn't golf for another month or so. Went from mid April until mid July or so without running. Even then it was a full year for full recovery.

Wow! That sounds miserable. I don't have any pain in the ankle at all...I don't think I damaged anything near the achilles. Sounds like my timetable will be similar regarding surgery...PT says the muscle is still attached, but torn within. He wants to see how things go over the next month before we do anything too crazy.

Yep....no golf for me either. I play in my club's annual tourney every year and it's the first weekend of Aug...be the first time I've missed since I became a member of this club.

Oh well, it could always be worse. 😁

I had no ankle pain either. One of my coworkers tore hers off the knee and it apparently isn't nearly as bad. I got some weird bruising after a few days so be prepped for that. Good luck on your recovery. They used the Graston Technique and then towards the end this electric needle shock stuff. Bite the pillow... That's all I'm saying.

Yikes!! That sounds horrible... When the PT grabbed my calf today at the "spot" of the tear it brought me near tears. He also warned me about the upcoming bruising...

So I have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday but planned to cancel it based on what my buddy said today. Basically, he said his rehab plan would be the same regardless of what the test showed unless it was some catastrophic injury, which neither of us believe it to be. He felt confident I did NOT tear away from a tendon or ligament or those from the bone. He felt confident it's a "significant tear" in the muscle fiber...painful, but not as much damage as you indicate your injury to have been.

Did you have a MRI? Worth the hassle? I really don't want to have to deal with it...

Pshhh, getting the military to offer an MRI is worthless. I didn't have one. My calf jiggled though. Literally. The Grayson technique hurt like heck, but I felt like a million bucks comparatively for two days afterwards, then the scar tissue would build back up.

I remember those military days...lol. I don't think I'm gonna go through with the one I have scheduled. My injury doesn't seem as bad as yours appears to have been. I'm gonna trust my PT buddy and rock on with what he says. He specifically talked today about controlling the method/manner/speed at which the scar tissue grows. I'm not looking forward to any of this...lol.

I don't know how much an MRI would prove at this point gif you, but kiddiedoc might be a little more knowledgeable (and by that I mean a lot more knowledgeable). Just keep to the pt plan. Can you put any weight on it?

Yea...I can walk with a limp and only slight pain as long as I avoid pushing off from my toes. PT wants me to use the crutches to help lighten the load from the foot, but he wants me to "use" the foot, too, so that the muscle continues to flex. He says this will allow the muscle/scar tissue to develop slowly and be flexible instead of developing quickly being really tight. He's a reputable PT so I trust his opinion...I'm gonna forego the MRI.

I couldn't move without crutches so the good news is you're already ahead of me. I walked into the clinic using an old cane and an umbrella to support me getting in

24:34 5k. Trying to get under 24 flat by next month. Have any of you ever tried tough mudder or anything like it?

Wow....sounds like your injury was much worse than mine. I couldn't walk yesterday after it happened, but I've been able to get around today. PT still says do the crutch-method though.

Anyway, glad you're mobile again. Hopefully, I won't take quite as long as you did. Lol...

Definitely hope you don't.

I remember the weirdest parts were after like two weeks I could move a few yards without crutches, but it took awhile to get completely off of them. Then I got to where I could ride my bike, walk rather normally, even golf. But I couldn't run forever. It was immediate pain.

Well, I have to be mobile without the crutches by Aug 14 for sure. As one career ends July 14, a new begins Aug 14. Can't go to the new place on crutches...lol

I did a Spartan with a group two years ago. It was really fun, but quite a bit of upper body challenge for some -- monkey bars, ropes, carrying heavy stuff, etc. I completed everything but missed the damn spear throw (I'm still salty over that because I had actually practiced). I would gladly do another and even go for a Trifecta (all three distances within one year).

I've done the 3 main Spartan races (for my trifecta) and a Tough Mudder.

The Tough Mudder for me at least, was more fun

If it doesn't heal in a reasonable time, it's not a bad idea to see an Orthopod to visit the need for imaging.

Thanks, doc! I appreciate the advice. I'm actually doing a lot better than I imagined at this point. Im still doing RICE, but Im walking on it with only a slight limp. A PT buddy of mine said crutches for 3-4 weeks, but I'm ready to ditch those already!! Lol... This thing hurt like hell when it happened, but I'm beginning to think it wasn't as bad as I believed it to be...thank goodness.
