The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

Ratings for NFL Hall of Fame Game Crash to 20-Year Low

Ratings for the NFL Hall of Fame Game and induction ceremony, crashed to lows not seen since 1998.

According to Pro Football Talk via Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal:
Thursday night’s Hall of Fame game between the Bears and Ravens register 6.78 million viewers. That’s a 17.8-percent decline from last year’s Cowboys-Cardinals game, and the smallest broadcast audience since 1998, when 6.3 million watched the Buccaneers and the Steelers.

The total audience for Saturday night’s enshrinement ceremony, simulcast on ESPN and NFL Network, dropped from 1.18 million to 1.17 million. While the difference is negligible, the 2018 class should have driven more eyes and ears.

I love the NFL and I have no f******* clue how they get 1M+ viewers for a preseason game

The problem is that those that are 'protesting' have made it about themselves rather than the issue. I'll bet you 90 percent of the knuckledragging NFL fandom, much less the players themselves, couldn't tell you what the 'protest' was about to begin with.

All it has done is reduced revenues to their employers, and there was no way to prove the protest had any effect on the originally intended purpose to begin with. It was ill conceived and childish. The only football field that Kaperdick should ever see again is on the back of a lawnmower.
And what are your thoughts regarding Trump and the other snowflakes reaction to all of this?

Yeah, I'm likely to get curb-stomped for this opinion. I don't care anymore.

We're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Players are kneeling. So what? If they wanted to be assholes they'd stay standing and turn their backs. In about every other situation, we'd consider kneeling a sign of honor; this is just a manufactured issue to keep people pissed off. And the fact that we're more concerned about our personal entertainment than the pernicious issues that create the desire for the players to protest is a whole other thing entirely.

We're a nation addicted to idolatry, with reverence and behaviors put in place for reasons many either don't know or don't care about anymore. Every year I would make sure I taught my students where our heightened interest in the flag comes from, where the Pledge came from, the original salute to the flag, and when and why "under God" was added. I'd also tell them why I stand and put my hand over my heart despite knowing the history of the ritual.

I believe we do a disservice to our national heritage, our country's symbols, and the ideals our soldiers have fought and died for when we expect blind adherence to an unwritten social code and spend more effort eviscerating those who bring attention to important issues than we do addressing the issues themselves.

Agree 100%. One can be a proud American without needing to "prove it" by reciting a pledge or singing a song. It blows my mind how much people worry about what others are doing during the pledge/anthem, feels like some Red Scare ****

I agree wholeheartedly. I wouldn't choose to protest during the national anthem, but that is my personal preference. The conservatives are so enraged by this display that they have lost their damn minds. Don't protest when I might see your protest. Protest on your own time in the privacy of your home for instance. I have seen comments like don't these overpaid thugs know how lucky they are? (If you don't see the racism in such a comment you are willfully blind.) And lucky? These men have worked harder to attain success than most other people do in their occupations. Overpaid? Through there efforts the owners are making plenty of money. If you are an integral part of your employers sustained success are you overpaid? The right has become snowflakes that have taken to boycotting their entertainers.

As for the pledge, I have always found it a bit creepy. The History of the Pledge

I'll bite......how is the PoA an example of socialism? Also, they have replaced it with another pledge that is "encouraged" to be said. If my child doesn't want to say that one, how have you cured the issue of "inclusive"?

The pledge was written by a devout socialist. I find it ironic that conservatives - supposed opponents of big government - support forcing children to begin every day by pledging their allegiance to the government. Its simple indoctrination.

Its a simple matter of respect. If you were not raised to have respect for anything except yourself then I can see where the outrage would be hard to understand. Its your right and their right to do so. The only option respectful people have is to turn it off. I wish the media/Trump would stop keeping this issue alive. I turned it off and did not miss it, I don't ask or care if anyone else does the same. Dead issue to me.

Agreed. I doubt our founding fathers would be excited over the notion of pledging your allegiance to a country/government.
