The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

The NFL has TV revenues pledged thru 2020. Basically the NFL's money is in the bank. The networks would have to break the contract if ratings go down. I would expect lawyers are salivating over this right now!

Overall this is good for America. Families can find something to do together on Sundays!

Good points.

Everybody has chosen sides in this debate. Now.....what are some solutions?

Trump is doubling down - makes things worse
Players seem entrenched - makes things worse

The power lies in the NFL to fix this problem while supporting their players at the same time.

I think kneeling BEFORE or AFTER the anthem takes away the argument of disrespecting the anthem, while at the same time expressing their freedom of speech. Fans that have a problem with that are showing the issue is not about disrespect to the military, flag and country. Their issue then is that they disagree that there is a problem with our justice system.

I tried to get an actual discussion going on ways to fix the policing and justice systems, I was looking for constructive responses from the supporters of the protest.

Want to take a guess on how that went, how many actually had something to say?

You bozo's can hope against hope, the NFL is going to be fine.

You are correct. However, their bottom line will take a hit from this.

Trump doing what Trump does best. Throw out some stupid comments, watch the other side double down on stupidity.

ESPN is being squeezed because people are moving from subscription TV like Dish, Direct TV and Comcast to internet based content delivery or OTA tv. When people "cut the cord", the revenue of the content providers is likewise cut.

ESPN spent too much money on television rights, but that was a leadership failure. You're conflating this issue with something wholly different.

Also, I've reached my quota of paying attention to you today.

Yes, that is part of it before this... the trend will continue.. you think this will stop the trend?

It has nothing to do with issues, not really, its about numbers. All of those numbers will in a few years roll down hill -- in a huge way.

You can stop listening anytime you want... the sooner the better because common sense escapes you even when its pointed out.

And if taxpayer funds are pulled and the anti-trust exemption is pulled, the NFL is over, I am not saying that will happen -- who knows.

We had a good start then LSU happened.

Completely inaccurate.

You're right. Of the teams that have waiting lists or PSL's - I should have stated, many have waiting lists.

The Titans for example have a 20 year wait and an estimated 22,000 on the list.

Correct. I think it's amusing that people aren't connecting the dots between the timing of his incendiary twitter rhetoric and his failures in washington to deliver on his campaign promises.

Ticket sales is not where of the majority money is made, ESPN was paying the NFL $2B a year for Monday Night Football and one wildcard game. I am not even sure most teams can pay the players on just ticket sales. idk

Revenue will not take a big hit until the TV contracts start coming due, that will be based on the bad performance of the existing contract.

ESPN for instance spends $2B on MNF but only generated directly on ads of $285m... which is why broadcasters are being hit first.

Ya'll shouldn't be distracted so easily.

Well, I kind of felt bad as most of what they were talking about were local and state issues, and they are talking about some national change. It made no sense, generally. It was very obvious they have no idea how government is setup/organized/administrated and how the legal system operates.

I mean the one guy didn't even know people go to jail for drug offenses in the State. I thought I was doing them a favor -- apparently, I should have just let them ramble on some more.

My bad.

How much deeper do you want to go down this hole?

As I stated in the other thread, I don't hold him entirely to blame for the GOP in Congress being completely and entirely inept. If anything, he's certainly showed the American public that neither side in Congress is worth a hootie darn.

Maybe that was his intent...

He is the biggest hypocrite in the world, who else to point out the hypocrisy? The plan is to destroy as much as possible the hypocrisy, that is pretty much it.

The point of all this is -- the people in DC are crap and will probably never make anything better for anyone but themselves.

I would say the opportunity has been given and through their hard work and God given ability they've earned it.

It is amazing how up and arms people got about Obama's dumb ass comment, "If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." At that time all the conservatives were claiming that their success had nothing to do with being given an opportunity. It was all success based on their hard work, but now... these guys didn't make it on their own.

The NFL is far from dead, but I do believe it might be peaking or have peaked.

I find it boring mostly and the protests just sealed it.

I think it has peaked, but will always be relevant because of the money people put into it from fantasy or sportsbooks.

This is a reasonable solution. A better one might be giving players screen time during the game to make public service announcements about that and other issues

I've never got on board with the NFL, ultimately one is just rooting for a uniform. The players (and I don't blame them) are simply hired guns who will work for anyone willing to pay them the most.
