The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

It is amazing how up and arms people got about Obama's dumb ass comment, "If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." At that time all the conservatives were claiming that their success had nothing to do with being given an opportunity. It was all success based on their hard work, but now... these guys didn't make it on their own.

"you didn't build that" sounds nothing like "where else would you have this opportunity"

But even the latter one carries a significant air of "black people, you're lucky we let you come to America. You should be eternally grateful and never complain"

It was a dumb ass comment. Because people in this country have the ambition, and most importantly the ability to create something for themselves is why opportunity exists for guys to get paid millions of dollars to entertain the masses.

"where else would you have this opportunity"

Is that what Trump said to the players that couldn't get in the NFL when he was an owner in the USFL?

You might want to research the history of the USFL and the players who played in it.

Yes. The bold is exactly what the football players have done. And yet, people on this board keep talking about their careers as some kind of "gift" they should feel lucky to receive.

When Trump keeps saying how much worse America has gotten, do we talk about how he should instead be grateful for being given the opportunity to live here? Because I seem to see a lot more buzzwords like "self-made," "built his own," etc.

I think people are envious of those that get paid a lot of money to play sports for a living. A helluva lot of money at that. I think that if I made a huge political statement at my job I probably would lose my job. When you combine those things it rubs people the wrong way. Maybe it's right, maybe it's wrong.

Nobody has to support free speech, the government has restriction on themselves via Constitution to not restrict free speech.

And when government does violate rights..?

It is most often citizens who push back to retain those rights, not government self-correcting. Your comment is not logical.

You want to get serious over a joke. The usfl was a joke and the players weren't the best. What more research do I need?:lolabove:

When the perception is that professional athletes just rolled out of bed and were luckily "given" (by whom?) their platform, rather than working hard for it and building it themselves, it absolutely is wrong.

They make a lot of money because there is a lot of demand for what they do. That's capitalism, not generosity.

This is a reasonable solution. A better one might be giving players screen time during the game to make public service announcements about that and other issues

Many may have a problem with personal politics being a part of the game.

My initial response when all this happened was, "Come on guys, let's keep your politics and hatred for the police and the president out of sports!" To me, sports has always been an escape from my real world. Sports has, until now, been a community and regional unifier, as we all cheered together no matter our skin color or world view.

Maybe the sports world is reaching a reformation where all of this changes. We all might have to come to grips with this.

The USFL was awesome and I wouldn't call Hershel Walker, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Gary Clark, Doug Flutie and hundreds of others who went to the NFL "not the best".

Trump ****ed up when he tried to take the USFL to a fall league.

When people that work in the entertainment industry, NFL players, start mixing their gameday profession and politics it can affect that demand. As some fans are proving now.

Not saying it will take down the NFL but if you're employment is based on people wanting to watch you perform, I'd try not to piss those people off too much if I wanted to keep things running smoothly.

Speaking of which.

I remember attending a Memphis Showboats game at the Liberty bowl as a kid.

It was kazoo night, they passed out kazoo's for the National Anthem.

Nothing says reverence to the country like 50k kazoo's playing bad versions of the SSB.

Politics has been a part of sports for a long time; look at the Olympics. People here just aren't used to seeing political stances they disagree with

I don't know if it was one, or not. What I do know is that protests are by their nature uncomfortable for the other side. As long as they are peaceful, there really is no debate to be had here.

They are poking their fingers in the eyes of patriotic Americans and then calling it a peaceful demonstration. This was planned to get a strong reaction and further divide the country.

Unless they have 20-foot arms, I don't know how they'd poke anyone from a kneeling position on the field

There is no stance here. These guys are retards. It is the most poorly articulated protest ever seen while at the same time offensive to millions who have no role in what you are protesting.

There are no laws being protested. There is not some secret club of law enforcement that target minorities. These idiots are protesting outliers and claiming they are the norm.

I am dome with the NFL mostly because of how ignorant a group of people the seem to be.

We've had peaceful protests in the past, and we've had people calling them "retards" as well. It'll be fun to see which side of history you end up on
