At the very least, we must stop the corrosive politicization of institutions that we need to keep nonpolitical — including the military.

I agree with our editorial that General Mark Milley should be aggressively investigated and, if the Washington Post reporting is verified, removed from office. In fact, I think he ought to be pressed, as a preliminary matter, about whether the reporting is substantially accurate; if he concedes that it is, he should be suspended immediately pending an investigation.

But we need a real investigation. I carry no brief for Milley, who personifies the politicization of institutions that must be apolitical in a properly functioning republic. Nevertheless, conclusions about his alleged behavior have gotten way out in front of the evidence.

Here's the thing. You can hate on Trump all day long over a variety of things. But if there ever was a time to take your hatred out of the equation and see this is absolutely wrong (if true) , this would be it.

For example Milley might have said, look, the controls are in place. Even if you hear from your intelligence that Trump has gone full bore bonkers and is ordering an attack, its not that simple.so call me before it gets out of hand.

Can you articulate why this is absolutely wrong?

It’s a genuine question. Still seems like that depends on circumstances about which there are conflicting accounts.

I agree with @Septic. If it was illegal, then he should still face appropriate punishment for it.

But I’m not at all clear that this was necessarily something illegal or even bad or wrong. It certainly doesn’t appear clear that it’s treason.

The calls don’t even seem to be particularly related to Trump and at what point were we using the threat of a shooting war as leverage against the Chinese such that this undermined his foreign policy?

At worst, it sounds like what Flynn was doing with the Russians.

You're the one who brought up trump firing Esper for <insert reason here> - I'm not sure how you think this factors into his ethical oversight over Miley prior to his termination.

Unless you're making the case that Esper ought to be in the hot-seat - I'm not sure what you're on about.
