Thoughts After Reading The Letter...

Many coaches skirt the rules, knowing they can report a violation and get off with a slap on the wrist. Smoke machines, simulations, jumbotrons, bbq's, hall of fame coach coming onto your campus to run your players thru drills during the season on ky campus, and more, are measured on risk v reward. Is it worth a little bad pub or a minor violation to get a kid on campus to lead your team? The line is fine. BP Justin Huntered the line by lying about it.

Clapping is eerily similar.

You should watch some other sports. Just the other night Roy Williams was on the sideline clapping his hands red with a grimmace watching Duke kick his Heels in the nuts for the final 10 minutes.

Then that settles it.

You're not a hypocrite if you simply don't care about the violations. And a heavy percentage of the posters on this board don't.

True. I just hate this whole thing. I'm probably one of the oldest people who post on this board and...in all the years I've followed the Vols (over 40 years) I have never been embarrassed by the actions of a coaching staff.

I've gone from loving Bruce Pearl as if he were blood kin, to wishing he had not been hired...all in the span of a couple days.

After all the crying and apologizing, I put on my Big Orange colored glasses & gave him the benefit of the doubt in regards to sincerity. (Everybody makes mistakes...blah..blah..blah) Then, after reading the letter of allegations & learning that Bruce went out and violated the rules one more time...it's obvious to me that we have a rogue on our hands.

Take it for what it's worth, but I hope they fire him. I love to watch the Vols win, just like everybody else...but I can't respect a program that turns a blind eye to what Bruce did.

There's many, many guys out there putting 80 hours in a week mowing their own field and listening to griping mothers who would gladly take the money and responsibility.

Mistakes will be made. But a player who knows that they have a coach who will punish the heck out of them, or just send their backsides packing usually don't try to stray too far. But the ones that do get sent home very quick.

Urban Meyer has a NC ring for both bird fingers he's giving you.

U are correct and it is not their job but the question is did they not know?

Sure they knew. Pearl told them beforehand that it was a violation if they went. The Crafts probably said sure, whatever, no skin off our noses, and went and enjoyed themselves. Apparently Pearl thought that meant he had a deal with the Crafts to keep it quiet if asked. Apparently the Crafts didn't.

what does it matter?

Nevermind. It doesnt have anything to do with it. You are right. Forget i said anything. Just dont blame Mr. Newton for having his hand out for his payment either

Totally agree with you on why i think bruce did it. Just pointing out in ur question asking about bruce teaching high schoolers to cheat maybe his father should have set the example for aaron at that point. Not coming clean down the road when it hits the fan which everyone agrees is wrong.

I'm not naive enough to believe that college recruiting is pure and clean. College recruiting is a business. Careers and lots of money are at stake. Having the dirty laundry aired sucks but I realize there is no shortage of unscrupulous activities in recruiting.

Lots of the dirty secrets in recruiting would bother me. Fortunately, only a few idiots get caught so the practice can maintain some public level of dignity.

Business or not, there are lines that you don't cross. There's a huge difference between violating a governing body's arcane, arbitrary rules and violating decent rules of ethical human behavior. Asking a kid and his family to lie for you is way over that line, as far as I'm concerned.

An example of what? The Crafts weren't cheating. Pearl was.

+1

I think it is ridiculous to say that him lying is any different than any other violation. A violation is a violation. What he did was wrong and I'm not condoning it at all. However, nobody can sit here and bash Bruce for all of this stuff when 99% of coaches in any collegiate sport do the same thing. The only difference is that Bruce just got caught. Yeah he made a dumb decision by trying to lie about it, but you can't find a coach in NCAA who doesn't commit the same violations or worse. He is human, just like everyone else, so you can't expect him to be perfect in every area. Who can honestly say that if they were in his shoes that they wouldn't have done the same thing?

Totally disagree. If they knew it was a violation and they agreed then they have a hand in it too. Not laying equal blame just saying. Was cam newtons dad not in essence cheating when he had his hand out knowing this was against the rules?

That's an enormous difference.

I did not see it alleged in the NOA that Pearl asked the kid to lie. Where is that?

It will be interesting to see the university's response to the allegation of John Craft saying the conversation with Pearl cause him to believe he was trying to influence him on his statements to the NCAA. It looks bad, but it is also open to believing John Craft's interpretation of a supposedly cryptic phone call.

And surely Pearl will the benefit of the doubt in a he said, she said scenario. I like that situation.

I think a high percentage on here could care less about respect or ethics as long as we're winning. I hope he's fired too. Time for another poll!

The truth is that you don't know the details of this "new violation" but assume you know wtf you are talking about, then call me ignorant. MH knew about this weeks ago. Compliance cleared it. It will be appealed. Did you know this?

Just shows how deep MH has inserted himself up Pearl's a**. The university compliance folks decided it was not a violation and did not report it to the NCAA although everyone in the world knows it was a violation, including Pearl and Hamilton. It seems that Hamilton will go absolutely to any length to try to keep Pearl. Could be because he knows he won't be far behind if Pearl leaves.
