Thoughts on J. Stokes talking football..

Did I hear Rachel Nichols correctly saying that if stokes stays he's gonna talk to butch about playing football this brings up so many questions 1. Is he a legit football player 2.What postion 3. How fast can he learn the offense or defense
I see him playing d-end or tight end clearly and if he can really translate his bball abilities to the football field could be dynamic

He would be an offensive tackle. He
could weigh320 very easily. A 6 8 320
dude
with
his
strength/
athleticism/
footwork
is a
first
rounder.

Understandable, but I don't think Stokes is playing, regardless, so none of this really matters.

I kinda, sorta agree wid you. But let's take a look at the short and long of the matter.

Pro - He has the size to be a TE.
Con - NO experience.
Con - A single season would hardly be enough to learn.
Con - He's on a basketball scholarship, not football.
Con - This might put spite betwit Cuonzo and Butch.
Pro(?) - He isn't a jumper and the NBA has big, bad experienced guys who can more than handle Stokes. He has issues with taller and equal sized players. So exploring a football option may actually make sense.
Con - Far as I know, Butch has been silent on this. Which may be the loudest evidence of Stokes' unsuitability.

Stokes is perhaps a better athlete than 98% of the players on the football team, he's a beast, when he want's to be.

I understand our DL depth is low, but the kid would simply make a better Tight End. Even if he didn't run a 4.48 he is still pretty quick. He has amazing hands and he is one of the most physical athletes of any sport. I would at least bring him in and see what he can do. If Jimmy Graham can do it, why not Stokes?

I think Stokes is a beast but he's not very fluid when he runs...he seems real stiff in the hips...you think he's athletic...him and lebron are basically the same size ....that dude is a freak

He played football in high school and has spent the last few years playing D1 SEC basketball. It's not the best league there is but he's hardly without athletic experience.

I do believe it is understood I'm not talking about athlete experience. I was specifically referring to football experience. Athlete experience could be anything, ping pong, badminton, or speed walking. Stokes surely has athlete experience given he's playing D-1 BB. However, no opposing LB DL-man has yet introduced him to SEC football.

I'm not saying that he couldn't do it. But football physical and basketball physical are vastly different things. It would be cool if he does play football but I will believe it when I see it :salute:

If Stokes is concerned about his prospects in the NBA then hedging his bets should be completely reasonable to Cuonzo... Besides he said he would play both as a senior in the article i read.

Your last point could go either way. Yes Butch would be very wise not to solicit Stokes but on the other hand, if Stokes actually gets serious and approaches Butch then fair game. I am sure Butch would communicate with Cuonzo and maybe even request permission to evaluate Stokes.

Two things. I respect his athleticism. But there is a difference between football and basketball strength. 2 there is nothing like taking a hit across the middle looking the other way. After that first hit, it could destroy his confidence. You can't just go and play major conference football without prior experience. It takes years for a body to adjust to the hits. They r car accidents

don't get me wrong,Stokes is a good athlete, but he would hate to meet Devrin Young across the middle :)

Are you experienced?
I think you are.

Everybody has brought up the bb athlete vs. the fb athlete. It is hard to make the transition. But it has been done. The starting tight end for Buffalo during there four year super bowl run was former Jacksonville State bb forward Keith McKellar who played for JS one year in fb after his four years of bb. He was 6'4" and 220 lbs.

Even Eric Berry would struggle to lay a game changing hit on a 6'-8" 280 lb TE as strong and athletic as stokes. It's not like the other team's stud DE or MLB gets a 10 yard head of steam to deliver a blow on a TE in a pass pattern. Stokes would be the largest (height plus strength) TE we've ever seen in the SEC. God help the DB's who have to attempt to separate stokes from the football!

Red zone (orange zone here).

All Stokes would need to do to have an IMPACT next season is be on the field when we have the ball inside the 10.

Stack 3 receivers to one side. If Stokes can learn to "rub" off a defender instead of pick--one of the three will be open every time.

Can he block and release at the goal line? Defenses will have to put a linebacker over him, and DBs will cheat to have an angle to break up the pass. That opens up a running lane and creates holes in the back of the end zone.

If next year Stokes was thrown only 10 passes, and had less than 100 yards receiving, he could easily score 38 points. (Math? I'm figuring one of those receptions to be a two-point conversion.)

My point is, he doesn't have to become an every-down TE next year to be a game changer. All he would need to do is develop a couple of specific play skills.

I agree, he has enough natural ability, to be effective in situations at TE or H back. But, I would love to see him on third and long in a passing situations, just turn him loose and let him rush the passer.

Leonard Pope may rival him. I don't remember the dude's measurables but he was huge.
