Tim Spencer

The RB coach Jones selects will probably be someone we have no clue about - like most of the rest of his staff.

Actually most of Jones staff is pretty well known unless you dont follow college football much and im guessing the RB coach will be well known and respected.

I thought the word out of Auburn was TT might get a show cause suspension from NCAA,Oh sorry i forgot we like those folks can Pearl coach RB's

A guy who coached 9 years in the NFL is a downgrade.
Yep, you were born stupid.

the guy hasn't coached college in years, in my opinion it is a downgrade. especially with recruiting because you are taking away a guy that was doing well and replacing him with a guy you just don't know. experience and coaching wise it isn't a bad move. we still need another stud recruiter.

How is a former NFL RB coach who was partially responsible for resurrecting Thomas Jones career and who also coached Eddie George at OSU a big downgrade from a coach who couldn't recruit a four or five star RB?

i was hoping for a big time recruiter, just my opinion. the guy can coach, but can he recruit especially since he's been out of the college game so long. i would take graham over him. i'm sure some would and some wouldn't.

Definitely not a downgrade in any shape or form. From a coaching standpoint its an upgrade in experience and results.

can't argue from a coaching standpoint, but the guy hasn't recruited in what like 9 years. graham landed north, harris, maybin, ferguson, foreman, and miller. i would sure rather have a guy that can bring in the recruits instead of hiring a question mark. really worried about the talent with the rest of the sec passing us by. i mean the guy may come in and tear it up, but as of right now you took your 1rst or 2nd best recruiter off the team and replaced him with a guy that hasn't recruited in a decade. i just don't know about that.

May have most recruiting potential of 3 I hear mentioned most and has experience coaching some very good RBs. I'm for him but support 100% who my coach CBJ decides upon. I want Heard to be a VOL in 2014 and good coach now...

Could care less about Benson. That was in response to Vol4life ?

Forte on the other hand, here's is Forte on Spencer...

"He noted he was ‘‘attached’’ to the coaching staff, particularly running backs coach Tim Spencer.
He helped develop me,’’ Forte said. ‘‘I liked him because he expects so much out of me because he knows the type of player I am.
He expects so much out of you that you want to go out there and play tough and play hard for a guy like that. I would recommend him to anybody.’’ -Sean Jensen, Chicago Sun Times 01.31.13

UT cannot afford to hire another coach with little or no SEC experience. Jones is really beginning to make me think he doesn't get what it takes to compete at this level.

Heck no come to think of it Saban and Meyer hired very few with any SEC experience, which they didn't have either, and it screwed them up for life down here.

Right now, Spencer sounds better than the alternatives. You got some in your back pocket?

I think Butch Jones goes after Sal Sunseri, he had more success than anyone in the SEC last year making RB look like superstars, and also let him coach QB's and WR's also. he made them look pretty good too.

eddie george was not very good we proved it in the citrus bowl. he only won the heisman cause he went to osu and we all know the media loves that university.

haha yeah it wasnt his 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns, an average of 152.2 yards per game. 600 rushing attempts only 6 fumbles. Yeah it was only cause he went to Ohio State, haha come on really

I'm hoping and praying that we get him. At first I wanted a solid recruiter but after doing some research what I've learned is that Spencers resume would be one of the best recruiting tools we could ever hope for. He also seems loyal and content to coach RBs.
But I just have this gut wrenching feeling its gonna be either kitchings who hasn't really done anything impressive and manning which has done even less than kitchings. The last thing this staff needs is more people with a similar work history or "knows the system". We also can't hire just anybody either, we need someone with a "pedigree" that will attract top rbs here. We're not fortunate enough to have some top talent currently on the roster and another "buddy" hire will almost assure we won't get any in the next few years either. Someone like Spencer on the other hand, with his history in the NFL and the RBs he coached at OSU would at least intrigue 1 top back to come play for him.

Kids come to play for going to the next level. Spencer has been there at that level for a decade. He can sell kids on preparing them to the next level.

Last 3 years averaged 450 carries, ~2000 yards and 2 fumbles lost per year!

comparing the experience of Graham with Spencer, Its certainly an upgrade. However, Graham brought the whole coaching at alma matter factor... which i think helps in recruiting... It didn't this year... but atleast it appeased the fans...
