Tom Smith commits to the Vols

The 2 times on here have him around 4.5 and 4.8. Average that to a 4.65. Now factor in that top-flight SEC DBs run around a 4.4. Now it's a sub-5 second window.

We know he can cover 50 yards in that time, judging from his 40 time. So what's the problem?

So by that logic you'd be upset with getting a 40 yard gain? You really will complain about anything.

I almost never take the time to watch a highlight tape bc I usually think they are a joke, but from reading the descriptions of this guy, doesn't that sound like his M.O., too?

Totally. My view, too. But to say he'll be doing that at this point is a stretch. I'm not gonna give him Heisman qualities before he gives me a reason to think he has it.

haha I'm just saying. The original point from the guy was this:
He is legit - 400lb plus squat, highest florida classification. Dont worry about what speed is listed, he got to the endzone. you dont have to pull away, just dont get caught.
I tried to tell him that you'll get caught by SEC DBs. I'm not upset at all with the gain. I'm just saying that if you're not pulling away in HS, you will get caught.

Oh yeah, I'm not giving him Ingram's status yet, just that he might be similar in style. If he develops with even more S&C, he might get caught by those DB's but can they do anything about it when they get there?

And to steal Jay's line from another thread, throw in Buie as a counter punch and I'd be very, very happy.

And at his pro-day he shaved off about 3/10 of a second. I'm not changing the subject. I'm saying he'll get caught.

This kid probably won't even see the field for two years, bcuz of the backs in front of him and you're saying he'll get caught with 4.5 speed! If you're going to say that knowshon moreno can knock off 3 tenths in a matter of a month what's to say Bennie Wylie can't have this kid down to low 4.4s by the time he sees the field?

Your argument works against you!

Every back is not a breakaway back. We need the types that get us 5 between the tackles too. Travis Henry never outran many people, he preferred to run over them, but he was definitely effective.

i dont like it necessarily. no other top program is going after him. and this means we wont even be in the wilder race as we had previously become because he wants to play rb and assuming we are trying to get justice hayes and d arnett as a package...i dont know. i just didnt really think he was a take at this time.

i agree i think dooley is willing to settle on 3 or 2 star players. i'm even more concerned now than i was before. where the hell are the offensive and defensive lineman at.

I was talking about Joe Haden. He had a terrible run at the Combine, but at his pro day, he was in normal shape.

Thi9s guy plays against some of the fastest teams in the entire nation. If he's breaking big runs against Fla 6A talent, the guy has enough speed. The guys he's flying through are future DI players. The guy is legit.

Jason Smith, drafted second overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, and Smith did not have ideal size and was only considered a two-star prospect by Rivals.com. He drew few scholarship offers. Just wanted to point out that these 18 year old kids can still develop and mature in college.:superman:

Or....you wont get caught... if you have a .2-.4 second lead, someone slips, has to turn their hips, trips over a blade of grass, bad angle.

But yes, you are right that if one train leaves NYC at 9am traveling at...nevermind.

this is exactly the point i was attempting to make.

True. Anything can happen.
Here's hoping he does well

Good, solid pickup. Remember, you need three RB's in the SEC. Even if he isn't a starter, seems like he'll still be a solid contributor. And RB isn't a need if BB comes back.

Of course he would choose UT when his other offers were from FAU, FIU, and terrible schools like that. Dooley can't recruit worth sh!t against anyone in the SEC. This guy won't be taking us anywhere. I can't wear orange until basketball season.

Fair enough. See ya in November.

Just wanted to point out that in the last two weeks of recruiting CDD was able to get Da'Rick from Georgia.

I don't think anyone here would have a problem with you never wearing orange again.

Fair weather fan??? Did you wear orange during basketball season before Bruce Pearl got here?

Oh, and now you add the factor that he's a RB. He's starting his sprint 20 yards before the DB starts his.

Hardesty didn't run away from any DBs this year and had one of the most productive seasons of any RB in the SEC this past year. I'll take a hard nosed runner that can pick up at least 5 yards every play over a guy that will break the occasional long run.
