The problem being they're more likely to get a negative reaction, and not sympathy for their cause.Your response is exactly why they do it.
If people only protested in ways that everyone could easily ignore or feel good about, it wouldn't be a protest.
Do I agree with flag burning? Oh heck no. I'm a Flag Code guy through and through. But I understand its efficacy at getting others' attention.

I love it when people hide behind free speech and think there’s no consequences to the things they can say or do . Can you do or say it ?.. absolutely and I defend your right to, should you do or say it? That’s up to you . I also would defend his right to exercise his free will .
You've never wanted to watch a douchebag get punched? Burning your nation's flag at the ceremony would definitely constitute a douch-move. Free speech or not, sometimes it is satisfying to watch someone get their comeuppance.
I'm going to put a bookmark on this post and go back and see if you have any comments from the past that defend cancel culture or social media attacks on conservatives over what they have said.
I'll never defend someone who physically assaults someone else, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't sometimes be satisfying to watch.
There are people in the middle. Some of whom may not even like the flag burning itself. But then they also see the backlash, and think it's worse than the act. And with the attention previously generated, people are more likely to be pay attention for the act than they would have otherwise.Effective how? Taking people that disagree with them already and doubling down so they really dont like you.
Agree on the mental health initiatives, but mentally ill transgenders make up a very small portion of the US population, so saying "the country is full of sick people" is a little dramatic.Everyone I disagree with is mentally ill seems to be a common refrain around here.
Maybe we should invest in large scale counseling and mental health initiatives if our country is so full of sick people.

This will shift some public opinion. Not sure how much, but more than would have otherwise if people didnt freak out.
Then we turn around and walk away. How is there any other answer?
