UNC and Duke Basketball, 2015-16

Where was the D? No one on the inbounds pass? He practically walked the ball up the court! Where was everyone??

Congrats to Carolina on a great season. This will sting a while. I soothed our f4 loss last year with bourbon. I don't know what you boys drink, probably limeritas.

I would have guarded the inbound. Damn. Villanova hit their shots. Helluva comeback lead by Paige. Just not quite enough. Sucks. Great game though.

If someone is on the inbounds pass they likely follow Jenkins up the court and he takes a contested shot. Dang.

Also, if Arcidiocono plays for Duke, how much is he hated?

Here's Paige's tying three. Crazy photo. Crazy shot.

It sucks, but I can't be disappointed. Now, if they'd have rolled over when 'Nova stretched it out to 10 and lost by double digits, that would be a different story. But they battled back, tied it on that miracle three from Paige....and then gave up a buzzer beater. That's life.

I still think I would have guarded the inbound, maybe even ran a 1-3-1 press but you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. 4.7 seconds is an eternity and you certainly don't want to foul anyone. Barring a turnover, 'Nova was gonna get a shot from somewhere. Unfortunately, it was too clean of a look from three and he nailed it. And that was the kid that played AAU ball with Brice Johnson and was adopted by Nate Britt's family. Brutal.

Heck of a season by UNC. Unfortunately winning the last one is what counts. It always hurts a lot.

Still sucks.

Also still confused as to why Brice was benched so long..

At one point with about 10 or 11 minutes left, neither Paige,Jackson,or Johnson were on the floor..

Although Way-To-Early Top 25's don't mean a thing, everyone I've seen so far has Grayson coming back so I'll take that as a positive thing considering we don't know yet what he'll do. I do think we'll know in the next few days though

He has room to improve a lot. He's already a good shooter, can score in bunches, but in the games I saw he wasn't much of a playmaker and sometimes got caught up in driving somewhat wildly to the basket over and over. I remember the UK game, where he looked like absolute garbage, and we didn't have the great of a defense. I think he will definitely come back and look to leave next season, although 2017 might be loaded with pg/sg players.

And I saw where UK might be #1 next year, depending where Bolden goes. Here we go again.

Thoughts and observations about the game:

1. One of the best that we've seen, with probably the best ending, perhaps only outdone by '83 NC State.

2. Other than Villanova still being defensively superior and having a freakishly higher shooting percentage than its opponent, the two teams' respective strengths in this game were completely the opposite of what was expected: UNC's guards rained in points, while Nova scored big in the paint.

3. My wife, who wouldn't even know basketball exists if not for me, was ecstatic when Paige hit his circus shot. She looked over at me and asked why I wasn't cheering. I told her very bluntly that he had hit the shot with too much time left.

4. Speaking of Paige, the greatest tragedy of this game is not that UNC lost, as Nova is a very deserving champ, but that Paige had one of the most clutch performances and perhaps the best shot we've ever witnessed in a title game, and yet, come 20, 10, even no more than 5 years from now, no one will remember. That's a shame.

5. UNC was the paragon of villainry this year, in the minds of many Americans, so it is fitting that UNC was disemboweled on the biggest stage. America needs her villains, and now everyone can feel morally superior for at least another year. Glad we could be of service.

6. The officiating was not the reason why UNC lost, but it was very bad and tended to favor Villanova more often than UNC.

I still think he'll leave. His draft stock won't be any higher than it is now. Sure he can become a better passer, or whatever, but scouts probably expect him to improve some in that area in the NBA anyway. Coming back is pretty risky when you won't be an All-American this time, won't be scoring 20ppg again, will be a year older and in a stronger draft class, and are just relying on adding some aspect to your game that scouts never thought possible. Especially when any significant injury likely drops you out of the first round altogether, which would mean you're facing an uphill battle to make more than $0 of NBA money.

I think Duke is fine if he leaves, though. They'll still be #1 or #2

I agree with you 100%. When he plays under control (letting the game come to him, trying to make his drives instead of just looking for contact he can't be stopped - see first half of the Yale game), but when he's just driving just to get contact and not looking to score he really just looks kinda silly. I think if he comes back and develops a mid-range game and learns to be a bit more under-control he can still average close to 20 a game. Right now he probably takes 16-20 shots a game, if he comes back, refines his game a little, he can probably take 10-15 shots a game and still average close to 20 - see Tyler Ulis. However, if he stays this year I think he comes back for his senior year bc why not? But I do think he is on pace to graduate in 3 years so who knows.

I hope he stays, but I'm not sure of his desire to play in the NBA. If that's his dream, he'll likely go, if not, he probably stays and tries to win another championship next year bc I honestly don't see another team as good as Duke next year, even with UK's class - they don't have the talent and experience coming back. I do think he does have the potential to be an All-American next year and still avg 20 bc it will be his team, but if he leaves I agree with you, Duke will still be okay. Luke will step into his role and even though I think Grayson is great, I think Luke is more skilled and can be even better than Grayson bc his game is already more refined and he's a more savvy player than Grayson is, which helps him around the rim.

Have seen quite a bit of discussion this morning regarding Roy Williams and his timeline for retirement. Most seem to think he'll at least ride things out until the 'aa issues are put to bed.

Curious to hear everyone's opinions on who UNC will target when Roy hangs it up. Assistant like Robinson or Davis? Will King Rice be ready? Outside the family?

You make it damn near impossible to feel sorry for you guys when you actually believe #5. I've said it before, I'll say it again, nobody, I mean nobody plays the victim better than UNC. The "everybody else does it" defense is UNC's favorite, while at same time mocking SEC schools for being substandard, and yet who gets caught? The guys who think they're the smartest in the room and contend to always have the moral high ground.
