United States, Cuba to normalize relations

Communist China tells the U.S. what to do - or suffer the consequences.

No American politician will stand up to Communist China.

So in your mind how could he have accomplished that? Congress has proven that anything he requests or shows interest in they will obstruct. It's been said from day one, anything he wants they will deny. So he should just keep wasting our time and money like congress or you know take the lead and just act on it by himself. Because well that's his only option at this point. Don't hate the player hate the game. Want him to go through the proper channels? Then we have got to stop electing DA and political mob bosses.

Say WHAT???
So he knows better than a collective governing body then is what you are saying? That dusty old document that established the 3 branches is outdated and old. We should re characterize Barry as Supreme Ruler immediately....

What did he do wrong?

I think this is a positive move and hope that we can start seeing a move to more free trade with Cuba. Hopefully we can see change ushered in quicker in Cuba than under the embargo. We already do business with communist China and Vietnam, in addition to having worked and working with dictators.

My mom, for example, lived under Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorship in the Philippines and she's told me about how he suspended habeus corpus and living under martial law during his rule. The US maintained relations with him despite his abuse of human rights. Sure it might not have been as bad as what the Castros do in Cuba, but we still deal with people like them all the time, and I think establishing diplomatic relations is almost always a good step in the right direction.

Ahhh, the timing of this is starting to make sense now...

From July of this year:

Russia's Rosneft to help Cuba explore offshore oil reserves

One of the most significant agreements allows the Russian oil company Rosneft to help explore and drill on an offshore oil platform on Cuba’s northeast coast. The area potentially has up to 20 billion barrels of oil, according to Cupet.

"Developing new blocks on Cuba's offshore shelf is (expected) in the very near future," Putin said.

Putin also confirmed that Russia is writing off 90 percent of Cuba’s debt, which amounts to $32 billion. The remaining 10 percent will be reinvested into the Cuban economy, the president added.

"We will provide support to our Cuban friends to overcome the illegal blockade of Cuba," Putin said.

A GDP of 110 billion vs one of 13 trillion for starters

Well, to be fair, the US is a huge reason behind both figures.

Open up Cuba and we get access to their beaches, cuisine (which is amazing), rum and cigars. They get access to our technology products and agriculture.

It's a win/win for both nations economically. Not to mention softening our stance is a segue to better relationships with South America.

If we're a smart hegemon, we'll try to prevent BRICS from spreading. But I'm not entirely sold that we're a smart hegemon.

China has over 1 billion people, of course we should have relations with them. Cuba is low hanging fruit. We should've negotiated basic rights for their people

Lol so it's not about human rights to you then, it's about money?

No. China has 1/6th of the worlds population. We should have a relationship with them. Cuba is a nothing compared to them. Your hero folded like a cheap suit and should've asked for basic human rights in return of normal relations

So American diplomacy is inly based on population numbers now. **** Southeast Asia!

And stop saying that the President is someone's hero just because they disagree with you. It makes your arguments shallow and even more pointless than they already are.

Your hero shouldve negotiated basic rights for Cuba. Cuban people are going to get killed over this.

"Hi Castro, we will build an embassy in Havana if you allow access to the Internet"

Seems like a fair trade to me.
