UPDATED Tim Banks a potential candidate for Miami and Clemson DC

He did when he started and should get a ton of credit for taking a thin roster riddled with talent/development holes and making it a great depth chart.

Unfortunately, he cannot match wits with the kinds of OCs that UT has to face when trying to break into the top tier. Was it a mystery to you what OSU was going to do any time they needed 5 or 7 yards on 3rd down? They killed UT with crossing routes and short throws to the flat. It was no surprise. Banks just wasn't prepared for it and did not have the skill to adjust to it.

There is always a chance that you lose someone who is a B to B+ type of coach and hire someone who flops. But honestly I personally won't be that upset if UT loses him.

I'm also not sure of his value in recruiting. Someone else may have more insight but I don't think he's considered elite.
Agree. A lot of teams killed us with crossing routes, quick releases, and basically in the middle of the field routes. Losing Pili did not help, but it was happening before he got injured. Not all the defensive players it appeared at time were on the same sheet of music.
No adjustments really made with personnel as well. Blitzes were straight up and appears with no twists, no stunts they were just uneventful.
Offensively we were real simple, no pre snap movement and if any not much.
Play calling nothing and real simple.
I was shocked. We did manage to keep the defense off the field if that was the goal. TOP was better and I did see spurts of where we were headed in the GA game but could not sustain it until when we/they figured it out.

The offense comes from Art Briles, not Hal Mummy. We do not run an air raid offense, we run a veer and shoot. Hal Mummy is said to be the creator of the air raid. So you are up the wrong coaching tree.
How do I know about our offense? Because I didn't get the information from someone internet idiot. I got it from Art Briles. Plenty of information out there about Briles & CJH. Maybe you should just stick to high school football.

You are actually saying that in 2022 we ran more complex routes that we did in 2024. Why do you think that is? Maybe because our 2024 receivers could not make the correct read!! Going fast doesn't mean we have set routes, it still requires our QB and WR's to manipulate the defense and be on the same page.

Our WR's(when the offense runs correctly) have many options based on their cover man, the NB, the safeties, and lb's in coverage. If you think reading all those and running the correct route isn't cerebral. Then I don't have enough crayons to spell it out for you.

Hyatt and Tillman are both buried on the depth chart behind some pretty good WR. Neither one of them play for a good team with tons of offense. Guess Hendon is a tertible QB since he cant get on the field. Trying to defend saying they aren't good because they don't catch 100 balls for 1500 yards and make the pro-bowl says a lot.

if you are such an offense guru, then how do you explain our WR's going from having options to running such basic concepts?

p.s. I will stick to golf, I make a very good living playing the game.
Not saying you are right or wrong, but Hal Mumme’s oc at Kentucky was Mike Leach, who was Huepels oc at Oklahoma.

Art briels also worked for Leach at tx tech.

I think our offense is a mixture of the two.

Maybe, but according to a Briles documentary and a really old interview with CJH, they don't mention Leach or Mummy.

Will he stay, or will he go? Thoughts?

On the face of it, doesn't make sense for Banks to leave an SEC program on the rise for a LATERAL move to a lesser (ACC) program (whether Miami or Clemson).

They got nothing we don't got. They give Tim Banks nothing he doesn't already have.

So that means it comes down to $$$. Is Banks actively using the interest to negotiate a higher salary with the Vols? And would he actually leave if one of these other programs were to bid significantly higher than we would go to keep him?

If Heupel is as pleased with the progress of our defense over the past four years as most of us are (except the paint-eating idiots), he'll match whatever pay the others realistically offfer. And he has Dan White behind him to come up with inventive ways to do that.

So I personally don't see much more here than a very good DC getting interest, and perhaps getting a nice bump in pay thanks to it. Don't think the man is going anywhere for anything short of a head coaching gig.

Go Vols!

Dabo Swinney is anticipating to be getting rid of their current defensive coordinator Wes Godwin. Tim Banks is emerging as the front runner. Article on MSN.

I think Banks is a good, not great DC.

That said, him leaving at this point in the year may cause issues with defensive players defecting to the portal and I'm not sure who Heupel would go after if he departs.

It probably would be best for UT if he stays at least one more season before moving on, but this is a business, and things rarely happen in an ideal way.

I feel like Banks has patched a lot of holes in our defense over his 4 year stint. He tends to adjust for the team and the players that we have which makes him a good DC in my book. Our issue tends to be recruiting/development although we are closing the gap there as well. I would hate to lose him.

If I was CTBs agent I would be riding this for every penny. Other than the D-line we were good but young at most other defensive positions. Despite that we had a Top 10 defense that was only outmatched twice all year; against monster rosters I might add. Perfect? No, but one of the best defenses in the last 20 years.

Pay the man his money!

Now, if it were a HC job I would be worried but it doesn't appear we are there yet......

So just curious but what qualifies as a great DC to you? Keep in mind here is where we have ranked nationally in defense under Banks.

2021- 90th
2022- 37th
2023- 22nd
2024- 8th

So in 4 years Banks has improved our defense 82 spots. He has proven to be our best DC since Chavis.

I agree with you, he is not great. He doesn't attack when we play good teams. No pressure against Georgia or Ohio State

Total offense - Ohio State 13th, Georgia 36th. Both had their way with our defense. And I know we were not good on offense, I would fire a couple of them coaches too

Yes we've seen big improvements under Banks and the defense is no longer a glaring weakness.

But the UGA and Ohio State games prove this wasn't an elite defense and that Banks isn't an elite DC as of yet.

Offenses with a pulse (UGA and Ohio State) were able to move the ball on us fairly effectively with motion/sweeps and creative play designs. I think Banks is content to try to generate pressure with his front four, and rarely uses exotic blitz packages or looks that are required in certain matchups or situations. He needs to improve and adjust in this area in order for him to be considered elite and one of the very best in CFB.

I think he is a good coordinator, but not near the level of an elite one (Kirby Smart, Brent Veneables, Dave Arranda, Phil Parker, Wink Martindale, Bud Foster, etc. etc. etc.) at this juncture.

To reiterate, I think losing him at this point would hurt the program, and I hope we can retain him.
