UT or OSU for the 8-seed? (Data)

I would rank them as around the 25-30th best team, but around number 12 in a national poll just because of their record.

Polls have never mirrored the best teams - they have always been a balancing act between best teams and best records.
Yeah…that’s what I was looking for and makes my point. Thank you

Yes, that makes you biased, or something else, really. I mean they just got bit*slapped all over the field by 3 tds to crappy 6-6 Oklahoma but you’d bet every penny that they would beat 11-1 PennSt in happy valley, eh…a fool and his money are easily parted
As Penn State was squeaking by the might Gophers by 1.

Strictly by the metrics, I don't know how the committee puts us ahead of OSU.
I think recency bias is only way we get in, and committee has shown that they will bounce teams back...only difference is this time around, there are no more games to re-position upwards. Or possibly b/c coaches and AP polls both have us one slot above OSU. They could also value us passing the eye test finally, against a pretty good team in Vandy, where we displayed what our offense "can" look like, and doing this later than earlier should serve us. Not sure if that will resonate either...if they consistently did that, SC would get in over Bama.

My mind says OSU gets the nod, my heart says UT. Metrics won’t be our friend. I also think they are overvaluing the Big 10 but it’s likely too late to make a total course correction. I also think they would look at something like avoiding matchups that have already occurred (TN/GA and PSU or Oregon/OSU). There’s also a part of me that thinks they might think a UT/OSU matchup would be more compelling/competitive at Neyland. Likely grasping at straws. If OSU gets the #8 seed, I almost prefer being lower and going to PSU or ND. Of course, the championship games likely screw everything up anyway so I’m just hoping to be above OSU somehow, someway tonight. We’ll know shortly…

Well, we will know within the next hour whether the committee aligns with the AP and Coaches poll in terms of how they rank Tennessee vs OSU.

I prefer not to travel - the home field advantage is HUGE. If these games were at a neutral site- it doesn't matter but tickets to the traveling team will be very limited.

I haven't read all this - had to work today - but apparently whatever metrics you all are discussing did not influence the voters in the AP and Coaches poll.

If the committee does just the opposite, they will be asked to explain considering both the AP folks and the coaches disagree.

Interesting analysis OP, what's the asterisk?

The fallacy here is that OSU's 2 top 10 wins are over teams who have done nothing but benefit from major media markets.

Neither Penn St nor Indiana have a high quality win, and in all likelihood are nowhere near being one of the best 10 teams in the country. Yet OSU benefits mightily from that premise.
Welcome to...forever.

Exactly. That whole part about jumping conference champs into the top 4 is REALLY annoying. I “get” there should be some reward (like guaranteed IN the playoff) but we should be hosting easily and not looking to have to play the team who has been #2 most of the year. Sort of like in the NFL when some 8-8 team gets a home game and knocks off a 12-4 “wildcard” team….

No one should be shocked.

Hinich told you exactly what it would be. I said this.

lose to a Michigan team that cant complete a forward pass and only drop 4 spots. Yup

Screwed .. big ten bias committee …. Both our losses on the road this year … Ohio state gets embarrassed at home to a three score underdog and then gets in a fight
