VN Article: Tennessee Two-fer Tuesday

John Brown was never seriously going to change schools. Of course he thought about it. We lost just about our entire coaching staff, who wouldn't. Re-recruiting players is just mending bridges. Yes, it exists. But it's more about getting them to trust you than getting them to like your school. They've committed to the school already for a reason.

As for 5.5 or 5.7 3*.... that's just something for people like you to follow.

I just choose a 3-level rating system: low level, mid level, high level prospect.

As much as people say you can't believe in star ratings, I disagree with them. However, I do not agree that you can accurately rate someone down to a tenth of a point. So no, I do not believe in a "level" of someone's star rating.

Okay...I thought we were having a discussion based on a defined and universally recognized rating system...

I didn't realize the whole discussion was based off a system you've created for yourself

No panic here. Just trying to be a voice of reason. May come off as negative but, again, I am a UT fan until the day I die. The difference between me and other people is that I'd love to be proven wrong. But unfortunately, to this point in time, I am correct.

If one agrees that to this point you are correct...that's still the equivilant of judging how good a 500 page novel is based on the first 10 pages

Here is my take on it. Dooley might have only gotten mostly 3*'s minus Da'Rick Rogers after he was hired. But he did an amazing job keeping most of our big time recruits here after Kiffn left..IMO it could have been way way worse. Dooley kept JuWuan James, Corey Miller, Tyler Bray, Michael Palardy (thank God) and Jacques Smith from leaving and locked them up as Vols. They easily could have left with the likes of Brandon Willis but Dooley and staff did great job to keep them. Not to mention after that he scored commitments from Rogers, Hunter (who I'm pretty sure wasn't leaning toward UT before coaching change), Stone, Neal, and Loften and wrapped up a Top 10 Class. I really don't know what more you can ask for from a first year coach who came into the kind of situation as he did.

and based on the fact that fall practice, much less the season, hasn't started and signing day is 8 months away...5 of those pages are the preface.

BAM, would you not agree that typically this time of year it is normal for a class to have 4 or 5 solid (not spectacular commits)? The only big time players that commit early are instate kids that have grown up knowing exactly what team they would play for, which in our case doesn't happen very often.

We are currently in on a host of elite players and these are the players that take time to close. Also factor in that DD is our 3rd coach in 3 years and it is going to take even longer for this staff to convince the high profile players to commit to TN.

IF we are sitting the week before signing day with 20 3 stars and 1 4 star then you could color me worried.

But right now us sitting at 5 3 star prospects is right about where I would expect us to be...don't judge them before they have had the time to prove the point you are trying to judge.:good!:

blind to see. The reason dooley kept those big name players from last year is basically they had no choice since they were early enrollees. Dooley is recruiting guys that are average to a little above average and would be great gets for La Tech but just will not bring us back to prominience in the SEC. Yes it is early and the koolaide drinkers will point to that and the fact that it's our third coach in 3 years but I don't recall the last staff making that excuse or even trying to. Fact is that the jury is really out on this staff and anyone trying to argue the opposite is really reaching. Dooley could have helped himself had he had the ability to keep Brown and Douglas but evidently couldn't bring himself to re-recruit so the onus is on him. Unless we begin to get difference making recruits rather than solid citizens in my opinion the foundation is not being built. That means we are counting on this coaching staff coaching up every recruit we get and that ain't going to happen.

Rogers, Neal, Hunter, Brown, Loften, and Clark all disagree with you

No, God just gave me the ability to form an opinion. Some people just ride an opinion wave as long as they see other people out in front.

If someone can honestly tell me this staff is recruiting as well as the last staff did (they will go nameless), I will kindly submit that person's name to a nearby mental institution.

That is my entire point. We've taken a step back. How is that being misunderstood? Simple minds, I guess.

1. God gave us all the ability to form an opinion.
2. Its impossible as of today, to say whether or not they are recruiting @ the level the previous staff did. Really the only way to TRULY compare them is to see how many EE's DD can land. Even then, we have a distorted picture.
3. People don't seem to understand that the "wait and see" isn't a choice. And it applies equally to both sides of the argument. Everything else is speculation.

Great article Justin, and thanks Freak.

IMHO, yesterday is CDD's initial recruiting plan put to action. He's putting together a class that will produce very few non-qualifiers, a lot of high character, hard-nosed, blue collar football players that will not only fill roster spots but compete at an SEC level.

A very low risk, high reward type philosophy that will enable the program & CDD to, within the next couple of years, gamble a bit more on some higher risk players who can yield elite results.

Good job CDD & GBO!

There's always a few people that complain about recruiting no matter the staff or the situation. About this time last year there were people complaining that our "all-star" staff of recruiters didn't have more big names committed yet. The same argument was made about having to build relationships and convince big names to come to a rebuilding project.

June is not the time to judge recruiting, it's just that simple. Things can, and most definitely will change. Haters are going to hate, it's what they do. Situations change, but they don't.

I distinctly remember some Skyfallingologists who were pretty livid when Scroggins committed to USC and Rettig committed to Boston College.

Tennessee must get back to winning first, the big names will follow after that order is restored, they also have to keep their players out of trouble off the field. Dooley is attacking these two areas. What more can you ask for?

Some of these folks don't understand that. Anybody that has to have fijivol defend them is in bad shape.

lmao no. no you are not.

So I'm not correct in saying, overall, the current staff in place at Tennessee hasn't recruited as well as the 1-and-done staff did last year?

Kiffin and company closed Nuke, Janzen Jackson, Bryce Brown, and Teague. With no help whatsoever from the previous staff before them. In fact, he stole 2 of those guys from Florida.

What has Dooley done in the same amount of time? You said Ambles was Kiffin's first big get. You were wrong.

I didn't make that system up.

It's no different than basketball's system. Ever heard of a mid-major prospect?

It's far easier to place a guy in 1 of 3 categories than to try to judge their abilities on a point scale. I'm not sure where this is confusing for you, but let me know how those decimal points work out.

This year's staff has recruited just as well. I'll take Smith, Posey, Randolph, and Power over Jose, Broussard, Harris, and Williams every day of the week.

Dooley and company closed with DaRick, Hunter, Neal, Loften, and Clark. In fact, 1 of those he stole from LSU and 1 he stole from UGA.

Obviously, Jacques was Kiffin's first big get, but I could have landed Jacques.

This is some serious keyboard warrior stuff right here.

haha, yeah AirVol3 is terrible.

Just watch his posts.... seriously. Facts ruffle feathers. That's why all the koolaid drinkers are getting on me. People like AirVol3, who really don't have a clue, just get ignored.

I feel honored. Thanks everyone. :hi:

hahahahaha What a selective choice of reason LV!! Would you take Janzen Jackson or Randolph?

Hunter was a UT lean, you know it.

Neal and Rogers were good gets. Clark was probably set to go to La Tech before Dooley left. I'm hopeful on him but again, if he's what you have to base your argument off of... I mean....

And true on Jacques, both parts.

Hunter prolly was a UT lean, but what does that matter at all? Dooley got his signature and convinced him to decommit from LSU.

Clark is a 4star. That would be the highest player La Tech has ever signed.

And Dooley did that in 2 weeks while Kiffin had 2 months.
