VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

Holbrook seems to be genuinely interested.

Seems, based on the few things out there that it's Serrano and Holbrook...

Yesterday Wilkerson was talking up Serrano, didn't think the degree was an issue...We'll see what he says today.

For you basketball guys, Sports Animal will have an interview with Martin.

I had a 15 minute one-on-one with Polk back in 2007. If you look past the accomplished coach with a great sense of comedic timing, he's just a grumpy old man who can see the end.

I know an umpire who ran him one time that said it took every fiber of his being to not laugh with what Polk said to him during an argument.

I wish I could post what he said about Sly Croom getting to take over part of the Palmeiro Center. One of the funniest things I've ever heard.

Not sure if this was posted, but Kendall Rogers today on Serrano:
Would be surprised if Dave Serrano doesn't land the Tennessee job....... that's what I'm hearing from solid sources.

I know in the past that budgetary issues have been a concern of Serrano's, and I also know that several seasons ago he alluded to the fact he really liked the family atmosphere of East Tennessee and Knoxville.

One source told me today to expect it. We'll see what happens.

Titan Central.com....forum ... Dave's Duggout... couldn't get the link to work.

and some CSF fans, none of the as surprised as the folks at tigerdroppings.

From Coach Tanner:"I will let you know, it’s not going to be easy for him to get out of the garnet and black," Tanner said. "It’s not going to be a case where we just stand behind and watch. We’re going to, if it gets to that point, we’re going to do everything we can to keep him right where he is."

Also says Holbrook to interview by phone tomrrow, not confirmed.

Kendall Rogers: Big TN,
From talking to sources, would be absolutely shocked if Serrano isn't the hire.

WOW!

Sort of a slow news day. Here's what we "know". Chad Holbrook MIGHT have a phone interview with UT tomorrow. He makes roughly $160K. SC Coach Tanner sounds like he wants to keep him. He's also said he will listen to Nebraska.

Mrs. Holbrook has family in Columbia. They left UNC to get closer to home. The fact that they love him and want to keep him, the fact that they have family there, and the fact that he is basically "Head Coach in Waiting", drive the price up for Tennessee.

Dave Serrano, is interested in the job. He's coached at UT before in the mid 90's when Helton and Dickey were around. He has experience recruiting in Tennessee, and while he was here, we went to the CWS for the first time in 44 years. He's taken two different teams to the CWS as a HC at Irvine and Fullerton.

Chris Burke wants the job and has been in relentless pursuit. Alan Cockrell wants in as well.

Is the Burke thing getting in Hamilton's way? If he hires Holbrook or Serrano, will a portion of the fanbase be against them from the get go because he didn't take a risk on Burke?

Those are the three guys getting the most play in the media today. As I've watched these searches the last few years I've learned one thing, be careful believing the reports, they're almost never right.

Food for thought. Does Tennessee want to get this done BEFORE the NCAA hearing? Which is also a week before the CWS.

Speaking of the NCAA. June 10th is quickly approaching. Do you feel more or less comfortable after what happened at USCw today? GBO!

Nebraska search list: Darin Erstad, Will Bolt, Todd Butler, Bill Kinnberg, Mark Kingston and of course Holbrook. From brief time on their message board, Holbrook to UN is pie in the sky. Fans think they end up with Bolt or Butler. Kinnberg is an interesting name for THAT job. Other than Holbrook, their search is going in a different direction it would appear.

Last comment of the evening. I was listening to the Smokies game on the radio, just in passing. I don't know if it was Doc or Wilkerson, but somebody from that station was in the booth as a guest. The only name mentioned for the UT job was Serrano. TIFWIW.

I see Hat's point, but I look at it this way. Some teachers at my high school were hired even though they did not have a teaching degree. They thought specialized courses such as architecuture, computer programming, criminal justice, etc. Techniquely they are not qualified to teach, but are allowed employment at public schools to instruct these courses because they are professionals that understand their area of expertise. The Board of Education realizes that while these teachers do not have the proper documentation that the educators of the core subjects have, they are still fully capable of doing their job adequetely.

From a University's standpoint, baseball should be viewed as a specialized "course". Baseball is a specified study in its own unique way to a handful of students at the school. The students that sign onto the baseball program are here to be both educated by qualified proffesors in the classroom, while at the same time representing the University through performance on the field.

Serrano is someone fully capable to provide this specialized service to both his players and to the school.

I think/hope Serrano has to turn the job down before we consider others. He would be my first, second, third and fourth choice for the job.

I think/hope MY school is ready to fully back baseball and it sounds like there are frustrations in Fullerton, CA that (despite being his "sort of" alma mater) are forcing him to look elsewhere. Despite being their best sport, Fullerton will not and maybe cannot match Tennessee's offer- especially with the economic and political situation in California. Dollar-for-dollar, due to cost of living and taxes; Fullerton would technically have to greatly exceed Tennessee's offer for Serrano to have the same disposable income.

For once, a coaching opening at Tennessee will be the biggest opening this year. And I hate to say this, but part of the reason is Mike Hamilton's persistence in upgrading stadium despite little assistance by the Delmonico regime. We have the stadium (and it will get even better) now we need to the product.

I am thrilled with the possibility of getting some California recruits back into Knoxville. They were a major part of our team while we were building in the early-90s and some remain my friends today. Assistants Bill Mosiello and Dave Serrano (both with CSF ties) made that happen.

I think with Serrano, we would have immediate improvement. I think we would actually get quite a few guys over the summer to play next season. No other candidate give that gravitas or instant bang for the buck.

By the way, I see that Mosiello (and his anger issues) is the manager for the Arkansas Travelers this season. Still only 46. He was certainly young when he was at UT.

If Serrano announces that he is going to work on his degree and get it at UT, would that change the complainers perception?

As someone who worked with some illiterate athletes who were able to pass classes at a University, I am not concerned that Serrano has a fake degree.

I would be fine with Serrano if his contract included him working toward a degree. I don't think it can just be swept under the rug.

A portion of a post from a former CSF player responding to posters that Serrano has underachieved:

I'm pretty surprised by the sentiments on here. I want a little more, but right now Serrano's legacy is:

4 years
172-70 record (.711)
1 Big West title, 1 Co-Big West title and hopefully a 2nd outright title this year
3 Regional Hosts, hopefully a 4th this year
3 Super Regional appearances, including 2 hosts
1 College World Series Appearance

The only other programs to reach the Super Regionals in 2008, 2009 and 2010 are ASU and Florida State.
