VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

Why is Burke's lack of coaching experience a cop-out? It's a pretty damn real reason not to hire the guy.

To be fair to this Enberg fella, I missed quite a bit of that interview, I know he talked about Serrano and what a great job he already has...I'll go back and listen to it again. The "cop out" line stood out to me because it's been used before in regards to Burke/experience which I find interesting.

I'll have more on #Tennessee, but there's a STRONG possibility #SouthCarolina associate hc Chad Holbrook interviews with #Vols next week. -per Rogers

I really don't understand how so many can think a guy is the best person for the job when he had never coached before. He was a great college player and below-average to average major leaguer. And he went to UT and wants the job. That's it. That's his resume.

If he is indeed the best person for the job then we should probably just end the baseball program and replace it with soccer.

I don't think it matters what fans want. If UT wanted Burke, if he was their first choice, he'd be out recruiting right now. That's not to say, he won't get an interview or have a legit shot, but he's not at the top of the list. That is obvious.

Michael Haney Quotes Holbrook...Holbrook on UT job: "I love it here at South Carolina. I want to be at South Carolina a long, long time. I want to retire at South Carolina.

These kids deserve every ounce of energy I got... to prepare them for this weekend for the biggest games of our season"

More Holbrook: "I haven't given that other situation one thought, nor should I. 100 percent of my focus is on our players"

What would you expect him to say considering they are still playing and have a shot at going to the CWS?

Yeah, just coach speak. Thought the "I want to retire..." bit was a little over the top for a guy who's willing to listen to other schools, but the rest, sure.

I talked with a D1 pitching coach this afternoon who has exchanged texts with other college coaches about UTs situation. He is hearing that UT will offer O'Conner, but know that he will decline. Holbrook is next on the list followed by Schlossnagle at TCU. Then Serrano would be considered later because of the diploma issue. Stricken at Kent is still a candidate as well.

An old nugget of info...

sports briefs

"One of the nation's top college baseball programs will be represented as featured speaker during the annual Farragut Admirals Baseball Diamond Dinner at Concord United Methodist Church Monday evening, Feb. 28. Dave Serrano, head baseball coach at Cal State Fullerton and former assistant coach with the Tennessee Volunteers, will speak to conclude the festivities. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a meet and greet with FHS players and coaches, with meals served at 6:30 p.m."

1. Seems Serrano might have a better relationship at Farragut as CSF's coach than the former Vol HC had.

2. He made that trip between series'.

3. Say's that he still has ties to the area.

I'd be impressed if Hamilton talks to O'Conner(HC UVA) and Schlossnagle. I just don't think they'd leave their situations to come here and it would cost what it would have for McDonnell. Which leaves us with Serrano and Holbrook. It may be that UT views Holbrook as having a recruiting edge over Serrano, but that's all it could be, especially with the degree being a non-issue. Not trying to shoot the messenger, the order of the list seems unusual, Holbrook over Schlossnagle seems crazy.

I think the main thing about Holbrook is that he would be willing to leave now, as opposed to waiting til the seasons over.

You may be right, he's the only one of those 4 who could do that. Based on his comments today it's a little hard to imagine. Other than that, I would add this...These teams start playing Friday and MH is at the SEC Spring Meetings until Friday. After Sunday we'll know some results, I just have a feeling nothing is going to happen this week. Even Rogers is saying Holbrook might interview next week. Still waiting to see what else he has to say. I do appreciate the info, and it may turn out to be entirely accurate, and I think that would be great news.

Guys it's not going to kill us to wait until CSF's season is over.....rushing into decisions is one of the dumbest things we could do.....our program has been a WRECK for 4 years under TR.....another 2-3 weeks will be just fine

The latest from Kendall Rogers, good stuff...

" Lastly, I can say from speaking to some sources up in Tennessee that there's a certain faction of of folks in Knoxville, Tenn., that aren't 100 percent sold on Serrano as the perfect fit for Tennessee. They think he's a great coach, but they want to explore their options, which is probably why you're seeing UT start a search committee."

"For now, I still believe it's Serrano with Holbrook running 2nd (but closing in)."

Trying to be on time....

I said I doubted much info would come over the holiday, and that worked out to be true. Hope all VN folks had a happy Memorial Day weekend. To the Night Cap...

Finally, after heated discussion about Dave Serrano's degree, it would appear it is a non-issue(thanks Frye). Well, it's not an issue, that UT has opened the door to hiring a coach without a degree. It may still be an issue for SOME members of "the search committee".

Kendall Rogers stated tonight that Serrano is in the lead but that Holbrook has his supporters among the UTAD. I don't take this lightly because it's not the first time I've seen it.

Holbrook has a fantastic reputation as a recruiter. I thought the use of the word "fit" by Rogers to be an interesting choice when talking about Serrano.

Do some in the UTAD think Serrano might not be a good fit? Do they think Holbrook can play catch-up on the recruiting front? Does he have better relationships in the fertile recruiting grounds of the Carolinas than does Serrano? Yeah, probably. Does Serrano bring something to the table in regards to being able to pull some players out of SoCal? Yeah probably.

Those are valid questions I guess. Still...in my mind...of the two...Serrano is the safe hire and Holbrook is a bit riskier.

Other names mentioned today, McDonnell, O'Conner, Schlossnagle and Burke. I say the first 3 are too expensive for Hamilton's wallet. But Hey, I hope MH is indeed talking to those type guys, that's great and there's no harm in asking guys at that level. If true...kudos.

As I mentioned earlier, Serrano and Holbrook begin the NCAA tourney Friday. For those interested, CSF plays at 11PM EST on ESPNU. I don't think the SC game will be televised, but I'll double check. Hamilton is at the SEC Spring Meetings until Friday. That doesn't mean nothing will happen, but I doubt any of the coaches mentioned here will be hired before then.

GBO!!!

There will be no hire until after the NCAA hearings in a week and a half. Especially since CSF and SoCar should both advance to Super Regional play.

If one or both lose this weekend, then we could have a hire next week but I doubt Mike will want to spend time early in week on hiring and pressers with prep going on for hearing. (and he should not do so)

Forgot about that, very true. thx.

Minimum 12 days....Maximum 31 days.

I have a bit of a different take I guess, If one of these teams loses early, MH may drop this right in the middle of the NCAA meetings as some "good news"... But there's no reason to think SC and CSF won't make it to the final eight, so...my glass is half full, unless you're a CSF fan.:)

Besides we're behind in recruiting, if SC and CSF are done after the weekend you gotta jump, which may be telling should one of them lose, but not the other.

Recruiting or not, we need to wait and make the right hire, not rush to make one for recruiting's sake like it seems we have the last couple of hires. Not downing Dooley or Martin at all, but the jury is still out on those guys. I would love to have a sure thing for once, and the sure things are still guiding their teams in the playoffs.

Oh, I'm not saying hurry, but if they've narrowed the candidates to two (pure speculation) and one of them loses this weekend, I'm just saying it will be interesting how it plays out.

No, I agree, if there is any doubt then do the due diligence. If Serrano (for instance) was to lose but not SC, and you still havn't interviewed Holbrook...then wait, sure I agree with that.
