VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

Article on govolsxtra says "Serrano no comment" on Tennesse job. He did visit with Farragut earlier this week which makes me think he is getting to know local coaches. If you look at how he comment in the article it makes him seem highly interested at the very least.

He already knows local coaches. He spoke at the Farragut Baseball Banquet in Janruary.

Yeah, the banquet, I knew he spoke at Farragut, but I could not remember exactly what for. I knew they won their game, so I figured that was why he was there. Serrano AT THE VERY LEAST HE IS NOT REJECTING US WHEN ASKED!:dance2: I think it is very telling when he comes from California to Tennessee to speak at a banquet!

I haven't been following the baseball program as much since the Delmonico teams ,but I would love to see them make it back to Omaha again.
I've been reading about this Serrano guy and have been impressed with him. It seems as if he is the front runner for the job. Is he a good hire if he is hired? And
What about Burke and Holbrook?

Some of the common thoughts here (in summary)

Why hire a head coach who has taken two separate teams to the College World Series (building one from scratch) or an assistant coach who recruited and helped build the defending national champion when we could hire Chris Burke who already knows where the University Center is?

Thanks. I for one will be excited to see a grand slam hire for this program. Serrano and Holbrook both would be great. I wouldn't mind seeing Burke here as an assistant but not as head coach.

Until he's teaching economics or biology a degree should be irrelevant. If its not required of other university employees in non-academia roles then it should not be required for an athletic role. I do have an issue with him keeping it on his resume though and touting it as legitimate. A degree is not necessary for the teaching of his trait nor is it necessary to stress the importance of obtaining a degree to others. Plenty of parents, without degrees, are able to encourage and motivate their children to succeeded in the classroom.

The guy who cuts the grass has a degree.

I really think a college coach should have a college degree. I feel like it would reflect poorly on the school to hire a coach without one. That being said, it's probably not fair for me to say this when I don't really care about college baseball.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fullerton on the brink of elimination....lost 1-0 to Stanford last night....now they have to win 3 straight to make it to the Supers....they'll have to beat Stanford twice if they beat Illinois

does anyone know the time of the game today???

I'll use this example. UTEP, whose admission criteria consists of the question "What time can you be here?", wouldn't allow Tim Floyd to hire Greg Foster as a full time assistant coach until he finished his degree this spring. That's former UTEP star and decade plus NBA vet Greg Foster. So, UTEP won't make an exception for a guy who actually means something to their school, but UT falls all over itself to accomodate some journeyman slob in a second tier sport. Awesome.

So is this hire happening for sure?

No, Hamilton is disbanding the baseball team and replacing them with a collegiate lawn darts team.

The more I've thought about it, the more his lack of legitimate degree bothers me. He's obviously a great coach, but this is setting yet another IMO bad precedent.

Bit surprised andy Holt tower is actually going to let this happen.

Just curious why coaching any sport needs a degree? When speaking, he is probably speaking about that sport, which I am sure he knows a lot about. I guess the only reason I can think of is that it is hard to tell the athlete how important school is. I guess that would be reason enough.

Specifically because it's a institute of higher learning.

Other than "minor" sports, this wouldn't even fly in the TSSAA.
