VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

Jimmy Cheek tells Hyams that they haven't interviewed anyone. MAY wait until after the CWS. Will not hire a search firm.

From Kendall Rogers Chat @ 2PM:

Still the same. Dave Serrano is the top choice and likely new head coach, but Chad Holbrook (South Carolina associate head coach) is still very much the No. 2 guy right now. Dan McDonnell rumors are just that. Rumors

Later, at 3PM he said Barring a surprise, it will be Serrano. FWIW

I don't take that as any kind of change from his comment yesterday evening.

I talked with a D1 pitching coach this afternoon who has exchanged texts with other college coaches about UTs situation. He is hearing that UT will offer O'Conner, but know that he will decline. Holbrook is next on the list followed by Schlossnagle at TCU. Then Serrano would be considered later because of the diploma issue. Stricken at Kent is still a candidate as well.

Solid info for the most part. Names are out of order, though.

According to govolsxtra, Hamiliton says the field has been narrowed, but would not name names or verify names. Hamilton said while there is no timeline, have to wait through playoffs.

Yes, it doesn't sound good that your coach doesn't have a degree, but at the end of the day we're not talking about a major college football or basketball coach....this is college baseball where unfortunately there's not too much interest from fans.....it's not like a major newspaper or TV station will be talking about it and making us look bad.....after what our program has went through the last 4 years I wouldn't have any hesitation in bringing in Serrano, even w/ the diploma issue.....the guy could instantly turn us into a top 25 program.....there are MANY successful people w/o degrees although you don't see them at universities I realize

At the end of the day I bring him on NO DOUBT!

Personally, I could give a tinkers dang if the Head Coach has a GED. His job is to Coach and Win. Thats it. Thats the list. :clapping:

There will be no hire until after the NCAA hearings in a week and a half. Especially since CSF and SoCar should both advance to Super Regional play.

If one or both lose this weekend, then we could have a hire next week but I doubt Mike will want to spend time early in week on hiring and pressers with prep going on for hearing. (and he should not do so)
The hire has been made just a matter of the appropriate time to announce. I think Hamilton is on vacation.

Hamilton is at the SEC Spring Meetings in Florida and then we have the meeting with the AA next week. I think it would be a bad idea to announce the hire until we are done in Indy.

Is there even enough talent on the baseball team for a new coach to make them competitive?

Well, with Nebraska hiring Darin Erstad, guess that takes an option off the table for a guy like Holbrook. Kendall Rogers seems convinced that Serrano is the guy, and that's a good deal to me, I'm just grateful that Raleigh is gone.

it appears that Nebraska is trying the under qualified alumnus route.

Erstad still has more coaching experience than Burke as he was a hitting instructor for this last season. But that's it.

Erstad is a big deal in Lincoln as he excelled in football and baseball and had a longer, more fruitful MLB career than Burke but that is just crazy. I believe he was a year older than Helton.

It appears that many of their fans are having the same misgivings about a heavily pushed Burke hire.

Oh, and it appears that the first assistant will be Will Bolt. Another Husker "legend" who has only been a volunteer and graduate assistant in past.

Per Rogers: Still hearing that Serrano will be the guy at #Tennessee. No search firm tells me all I need to know. But Holbrook also in there

Article on govolsxtra says "Serrano no comment" on Tennesse job. He did visit with Farragut earlier this week which makes me think he is getting to know local coaches. If you look at how he comment in the article it makes him seem highly interested at the very least.

whoever that moron hamilton hires, ut's buyout will be eight figures while if he walks his new employer owes ut 10 cents.

Per Kendall Rogers(more of the same)..."I'd expect #Fullerton coach Dave Serrano to head to #Tennessee, but until it's announced, it's not a done deal. #Vols #SEC"

CSF vs. Ill. game is on ESPNU, reall entertaining game so far. CSF down 2 after 2

What a great game...CSF=Aggressive. Don't take my word for it...

Rogers:what a crazy back and forth game this is. #Fullerton goes up in #Illinois 4-2, #Illini tied it at 4-4, now it's 6-4 #Titans.#BigWest #BigTen
