VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

Would you all rather have Serrano or Holbrook? I tend to think Holbrook would do better recruiting here.

I'll take Serrano...much more proven track record.

Vol66...THANK YOU for all the time and effort you have put in to keeping VolNation up to date on this coaching search. I personally look forward to your daily summaries of the recent events. P.S. good luck with your son. I just finished PT my 3rd so I understand, LOL!

Go Vols!!

I think they'd both do fine recruiting. In the immediate area I'd give Serrano the edge, he's got relationships here. Obviously Holbrook brings his Carolina connections, and the Carolinas aren't that far away. Serrano of course has the SOCal connections, in addition Serrano has recruited here in the past.

What really tips the scales to Serrano for me is he's been a successful HC at two schools. Don't think we could go wrong with either, I just hope it's one of them.

:hi: Your 3rd! Much respect sir.

From what I hear, there is some pretty substantial rumors going around that Serrano would bring Corral back as Pitching Coach. If not, Danny Clark is a name to watch for that position if in fact Serrano gets it. Ash Lawson may be sticking around as well is the rumor.

I still say it's Serrano's job. But I could also see Cronan going with Holbrook.

My dream staff would be Serrano as HC, Corral at pitching coach, and Burke at the last spot.

However, with Serrano, we would not really need a pitching coach, so we could take another offensive/recruiting coach as well

If either one gets it I could see Clark coming as pitching coach and Lawson staying on as recruiting coordinator. I have heard similar rumors.

I know Danny very well. I could see him making that move. Although he has a cake job right now.

Wilkerson calls it a two horse race with Serrano in the clubhouse. Says Tanner wants to keep Holbrook, so it would be a fight. Said Holbrook still has games to play and might be back at the CWS.(implying you couldn't hire him next week if SC is still alive, I GUESS)

Pennington says if it comes down to choosing between Serrano and someone else, he hopes the degree issue isin't the deciding factor. TIFWIW...

Hyams says a coach will be hired next week.

Caller asks Wilkerson if he knows who it will be, Wilkerson says he has a good idea.

Caller asks him who it could be, "Chad Holbrook's season is still going on, Dave Serrano's isn't."

66, your quality contributions to this situation cannot be understated..hats off to you, my friend.

Serrano would be a great hire for #Tennessee, but #SouthCarolina associate head coach Chad Holbrook gaining mucho steam.

Twitter

In a response to a Vol fan's question: Would Serrano be the home run hire that gets us back to Rosenblatt?

Makes me believe even more that his response in the interview the other day was too keep from tipping his hand. If the hire comes mid to late next week it could be to allow South Carolina to play the Super Regional without distraction, and then announce it no matter what happens to the Cocks. Not that Serrano would be a bad thing, at least it looks like UT will get a good one.

Here's what we know, or at least can verify. This list of Coaches has been contacted by UT or has contacted UT on their own. This is not to say a formal interview was conducted.

Dave Serrano 100%
Chad Holbrook 100%
Bobby Pierce 100%
Gary Gilmore 100%
Phil Garner 100% (he endorsed burke)
Rick Honeycutt 100%
Chris Burke 100%
Schlossnagle 80% (can't verify)
Dan McDonnell 90% (can't verify)
Scott Stricklin 50% (can't verify)
maybe Greg Evans and Mike Bell, and Tim Corbin.

I think we'd all be cool with Schloss, McDonnell and Corbin, but...let's get real. The only HC that remains in that glorified air, based on accomplishments, is Dave Serrano.

We may be calling Serrano 1A and Holbrook 1B, but on paper, well, it's apples and oranges. Holbrook IS a great recruiter, no doubt. But he has as much head coaching experience as Pat Shine.

Serrano is a proven, PROVEN, head coach. He obviously can recruit. He has relationships in this area AND he's got relationships in California, a hot bed of talent.

One final thought on recruiting...This is a serious question... If you are Corbin, who do you fear more, Serrano or Holbrook? Serrano's going to lock down east Tennessee the moment he's hired IMO. JMO.

More important IMO, he WANTS to be here. You don't hear any" I'm fine at Fullerton" stuff coming out. Holbrook may be the guy chosen, but a guy that would be "as happy as a pig in mud to be an asst. for Coach Tanner at SC..." Really?

I agree that Holbrook might have been in "coach speak" mode. Not a big deal. He may have been sincere on the other hand, and there's just as much reason to believe his family is completely happy there.

Here's my point. If Serrano had the same degree that McDonnell has wouldn't this be over already? Serrano is in tier 1 and Holbrook may be leading tier 2, but Pierce, Stricklin and Gilmore have more experience.

UT is a rebuild. No coach is walking in here with the gun loaded. Holbrook made a good situation better, but Serrano and the others built......Alas to the news........

I thought there would be some news today, Cronan had meetings yesterday and at some point today, with the Baseball Committee. Maybe some VN insiders can provide some details, and I'd hope, point out what I have gotten wrong.

If memory serves, the Cocks and Huskies get it on tomorrow at 6 PM on ESPNU, for those interested.

NCAA hearing tomorrow, 8:30 AM...Rucker, Gribble and who knows who else are there. Hey fellas, enjoy Indy cause you won't get a scoop this weekend. You should be here sniffing around giving us baseball news!!! DOh! I kid, I kid...

My kid pooped in the potty and I cheered like it was the Sugar Bowl victory over Miami. GBO!
