Here's what we know, or at least can verify. This list of Coaches has been contacted by UT or has contacted UT on their own. This is not to say a formal interview was conducted.
Dave Serrano 100%
Chad Holbrook 100%
Bobby Pierce 100%
Gary Gilmore 100%
Phil Garner 100% (he endorsed burke)
Rick Honeycutt 100%
Chris Burke 100%
Schlossnagle 80% (can't verify)
Dan McDonnell 90% (can't verify)
Scott Stricklin 50% (can't verify)
maybe Greg Evans and Mike Bell, and Tim Corbin.
I think we'd all be cool with Schloss, McDonnell and Corbin, but...let's get real. The only HC that remains in that glorified air, based on accomplishments, is Dave Serrano.
We may be calling Serrano 1A and Holbrook 1B, but on paper, well, it's apples and oranges. Holbrook IS a great recruiter, no doubt. But he has as much head coaching experience as Pat Shine.
Serrano is a proven, PROVEN, head coach. He obviously can recruit. He has relationships in this area AND he's got relationships in California, a hot bed of talent.
One final thought on recruiting...This is a serious question... If you are Corbin, who do you fear more, Serrano or Holbrook? Serrano's going to lock down east Tennessee the moment he's hired IMO. JMO.
More important IMO, he WANTS to be here. You don't hear any" I'm fine at Fullerton" stuff coming out. Holbrook may be the guy chosen, but a guy that would be "as happy as a pig in mud to be an asst. for Coach Tanner at SC..." Really?
I agree that Holbrook might have been in "coach speak" mode. Not a big deal. He may have been sincere on the other hand, and there's just as much reason to believe his family is completely happy there.
Here's my point. If Serrano had the same degree that McDonnell has wouldn't this be over already? Serrano is in tier 1 and Holbrook may be leading tier 2, but Pierce, Stricklin and Gilmore have more experience.
UT is a rebuild. No coach is walking in here with the gun loaded. Holbrook made a good situation better, but Serrano and the others built......Alas to the news........
I thought there would be some news today, Cronan had meetings yesterday and at some point today, with the Baseball Committee. Maybe some VN insiders can provide some details, and I'd hope, point out what I have gotten wrong.
If memory serves, the Cocks and Huskies get it on tomorrow at 6 PM on ESPNU, for those interested.
NCAA hearing tomorrow, 8:30 AM...Rucker, Gribble and who knows who else are there. Hey fellas, enjoy Indy cause you won't get a scoop this weekend. You should be here sniffing around giving us baseball news!!! DOh! I kid, I kid...
My kid pooped in the potty and I cheered like it was the Sugar Bowl victory over Miami. GBO!
