Vols at #5 CFP tonight? Nope, they're #7

Head to head winners and their rankings.

FSU over LSU
Oregon State over Oregon
Oregon over UCLA
Mississippi State over Ole Miss

All schools with the same record. In every instance the head to head winner it right on top of the loser in the rankings. Tennessee is the only school to get the shaft.

I and just about 99% on this board hate Bama. UT **** the bed at SC and Hooker tore his ACL. Bama should be ranked above UT without Hooker. Hard to admit that, but it's true. UT just needs to win their bowl game and finish top 5 with 11 wins.

By that logic, we should be out of the playoffs even if we had gone undefeated thus far and lost Hooker on the final play of an SEC Championship victory. Would you agree with that outcome?

I think it’s just a matter of fairness.
we should be 6 and Bama 7.
We beat Bama.
We routed the other team that beat Bama.
Those two things should Trump our rout loss at USCe and losing our starting QB to injury.
I agree but but if these rankings stay the same after the conference championship games, and LSU loses to UGA, all this really means is Bama gets put in the sugar bowl and we get the orange. Personally, I’m ok with that.

I think you may feel different after you see what happens when USC and TCU lose this weekend
Then what? USC faces OSU in the rose bowl instead of Utah and TCU goes to the sugar instead of K State? Heck they may still get in anyways (well not USC) and so will a one loss OSU. Bama is not making the playoffs with 2 losses.

Are rankings based upon teams and records or by players available ? Otherwise you just rank the teams by number of 5-star and 4-star players and throw out the records and the head to head match ups.

If we get demoted to cotton, many players will likely opt out. Then we will likely get embarrassed. That sounds like a lose lose situation.

There's a pretty gigantic, glaringly obvious reason we're not ranked over Alabama.

Joe Milton-led Vols are not better than or beating Alabama. Hendon Hooker is required for the Vols to > Bama.

Hooker isn't coming back this year.

Dunno how or why people gloss over that fact.

That is completely preposterous speculation as our lone game without Hooker was as convincing a win as any we’ve had all year. And if you follow that line of logic you are essentially saying UT should be out of the playoffs as undefeated SEC champs if Hooker gets hurt in the final game.

There's no reason to play stupid and pretend that Hooker isn't a massively better QB than Milton. Props to Milton for sticking around, giving us a solid backup option as a guy that can hopefully help us win whatever NY6 bowl we get in to, but he's not Heisman-front runner level like Hooker. He's not even in the same stratosphere.

Saying "we don't know that" because Milton handed the ball off 40 times or whatever to beat a bad Vanderbilt team is ridiculous.

If we were undefeated SEC champs it'd mean our defense wasn't a dumpster fire and there'd be surrounding factors that could potentially make up for a loss of Hooker against high end teams. But in some weird universe that we were the undefeated SEC champs with this same team and same garbage defense and lost Hooker in the SEC title game, I wouldn't have an issue if the Vols were left out depending on what teams were behind them. It'd never happen, but I could buy the argument. In a specific case like this year, I'd certainly rank all of Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, TCU and perhaps USC over a Tennessee without Hooker.

Clemson plays at home as 8th against a 14 point dog. Loses. Drops 1 spot.

We beat Bama, have the same number of losses as Bama and beat the **** out of the other team that beat Bama…. Yet are behind bama.

All I can think is it’s the loss of hooker.

No, it is the love of Bama

Also means the Vols don't have any friends inside the committee and TN hasn't been offering to take them out to eat recently (aka greasing their palm).

LSU. 2019. Joe Burrow breaks his leg in the fourth quarter of the SEC Championship. You’re leaving them out of the playoffs. Fun times.

Sorry, Tennessee, we have decided that you are too reliant on Cedric Tillman and cannot possibly defeat Alabama with him on the bench. The Third Saturday in October is hereby declared a victory for the Crimson Tide.
