Vols at #5 CFP tonight? Nope, they're #7

I know this sounds absolutely insane, so we will have to wait to see. My cousin has a friend that is close with the committee and he says we are jumping Ohio St and Bama for the #5 spot.
Now Georgia and Michigan are in no matter what, but if TCU or USC slips up we are in.

GBO- GO VOLS GO!

You, sir have a future in journalism. You just need to refine your phrases a bit. Had you used ...

"unnamed sources close to the committee" told XXXXX News late this Monday evening that based on TNs SOS, that they are actually seen in the #5 spot, and are almost certain to move into the playoff group if TCU or USCw falter this weekend. Developing.

... then after you generate traffic and follows, the truth is revealed after one of them loses and UT is @ #6, so you write another piece using "on the condition of anonymity it was revealed to XXXXX News" that TNs blowout loss 2 weeks back pushed the committee back to their original stance" generating even more buzz and revenue ...

See how they do it? You're close.

That’s a pretty silly way to judge teams. Losses shouldn’t count more or less because of the time of their occurrences.

well yea your right.

and they don’t. However if you lose the 1st game of the season you have “time” to make up for the loss. Time to rise again in the poll. You have time to beat good teams and to make you case again.

By losing late…….when you fall in the ranking as you should (by your own statement) you simply don’t have time to gain that back.

Bama gets the benefit a lot but times are changing. They aren’t the bully they once were. Teams are getting better and more teams are coming after them. Saban is a great coach but he is past his prime. Not that he can’t still win and compete for championships but it’s darn sure not going to get any easier. I like where we sit with a much younger hungry coach and staff that is building a giant on Rocky Top!!!!! Bring on who freakin ever!!!! GBO

Which is really why previous polls shouldn’t be considered. Preseason polls, particularly, are stupid and corrupt the entire season with bias. Each week should be an entirely new blank slate and official rankings shouldn’t be drawn up at all until at least a few weeks into the season.

Well my sister says that we will be number 1 if every team in front of us loses next weekend.

If you think the CFP members are casually just telling friends/family what they are doing, then go ahead

Well the playoff ranking doesn’t start until mid season for this reason. They don’t care about other polls. And each week is a new ranking in the playoff system…….it’s just usually close unless teams lose.

The playoff uses a lot of stuff like SOS, SOR, how teams faired that week, ect that’s why it could be slightly different each week.

Preseason has zero to do with playoff rankings.

However if in week 13 the committee thought Bama should be ahead of Tennessee……..why would they think differently in week 14?

That’s what I been saying. Tennessee beat Vandy that’s not going to change the committees mind……,.and obviously it didn’t.

I really think if TN had won out and the chalk holds this weekend, a 1-loss Pac 12 Champion would have jumped us for the 4th spot. That's the only consolation I have been able to talk myself into as I dealt with the grief of SC lol.

They would have ranked wins over #15 Oregon State (9-3), #17 UCLA (9-3), #21 Notre Dame (8-4), and #11 Utah (9-3)... a Pac12 championship and only one loss by one point to #11.

Vols would have had* ranked wins over #6 Alabama and #14 LSU and no conference Championship. Imagine the meltdown we would have if we were jumped in the last week.

So is a 2 loss USC gonna stay ahead of Bama? Cause they would still have better credentials.

I love a good “my cousin has a friend that is close with the committee” thread

I don’t care who wins. I pull for the Vols to win and that’s it. The CFP committee is corrupt to the core and has lost all credibility. They deviated from their stated protocol to placate the Bama bias.

It was in response to a post saying there is no way we could beat any of the playoff teams. Several of them are more than beatable.
One more time. We lost our QB. At this time we are not a top 4 team. The CFP boards job is to select the best 4 now not after we beat Bama and Lsu. Without Williams, USC is not in. Without Bryce, Bama would not be considered. Ga might still be in without their QB because they are not at all QB dependent.

I would like to introduce you to @MIT_Beaver .

The criteria changes to support the narrative that the committee wants. It is plain and simple name bias.

Truly should be some system based on computer rankings for football.
No different than basketball….every year. Moving the goalposts as they go along. By every metric UT was better than UK and AU last year yet we get a 3 seed and they get a 2 seed.

Put me in the minority but give me a computer generated result all day everyday. The algorithm doesn’t recognize or give two-***** about the name it’s about the numbers. 90% of the time, the semifinals have proved to be blowouts and that there’s really only 2 teams deserving every year anyway.

Same people who were saying Tennessee was going to get hosed even at 11-1 are now saying Tennessee is getting hosed for not being top 6 after 10-2 and complete beatdown by usce. Y’all funny

This is why I listen to few people on here.

One more time: Some guy said there is no way we could beat any of the playoff teams. I disagreed and supported the argument. You are arguing against something I never said.

I and just about 99% on this board hate Bama. UT **** the bed at SC and Hooker tore his ACL. Bama should be ranked above UT without Hooker. Hard to admit that, but it's true. UT just needs to win their bowl game and finish top 5 with 11 wins.

There is one instance of a team with the same record being ranked below a team they defeated head to head. There are four instances of it going the other way. Guess who the outlier is?
