Vols hold players only meeting

Yes. The Debbie n Donnie Downers way or the way most VOLS fans anticipate. Thank you for reminding us of the possibilities of negative outcomes.

Just saying, I've seen these things IRL. If they come off as preachy or aloof, then there is no faster way to destroy a locker room. BUT, if the leaders are respected, accept responsibility, and ask everyone to step it up a notch with a clean slate, you can create some magic.

A player-only meeting isn't inherently a bad thing, but in this instance it came about because of a bad performance. The AP game stunk. Nothing good about it other than the win. The players heard the boos, and the leaders of the team know that they can't start SEC play and bring that kind of performance and expect to win--good chance any other SEC would have walked out of Neyland with a win against us.

So, yeah, the meeting is bad because it had to be held due to a very poor game. But I don't think it indicates a divided or jaded locker room. Just more of the team's leaders bringing everyone together and making it clear that what happened Saturday is unacceptable for everyone and we all need to get our heads right and laser focused moving forward.

not sure what to make of this. Some of Milton's comments in the post-game press conference could be taken to imply that receivers were taking plays off or not giving full effort, so that could have led to some internal strife and recriminations.

Which one the one where he (Milton) said he did not "start at his best"? There was nothing wrong with what he said.

I think it’s great the players recognize they can play at another level despite being 2-0 instead of waiting for a loss

Whoever said players only meetings are a sign of bad things don’t know what they’re talking about. We are just hearing about this one. If you think Georgia didn’t have have a players only meeting after Missouri you’re an idiot. The best teams I’ve ever been on had players only meetings after bad wins and bad loses. It shows you care and won’t let it happen again. You should be more concerned if the players just brushed it off and acted like they didn’t care. This means they are meeting issues head on and have vowed as a team to not let it happen again. The players on out meetings are bad narratives have always pissed me off. Every team has them you just never hear about them.
Actually you can Google a school and players only meeting. These are stories insiders love to break. Seems GA had their last one in 2020, Bama 2018, UT yesterday. Should be alarming to have one this early in the season.

This almost certainly didn't "slip through the cracks" and get reported. People beyond the players approved this getting out. If it DID slip through the cracks, Danny White will be kicking butts and taking names.

If that is the case, he will be busy:

The dog Smokey was not at the game

The mascot Smokey was in the end zone during a time out beating up on a blow up alligator when Austin Peay was on the 10 yard line getting ready to score

The checkerboard in the end zone looked like it had not been painted since the Orange White game

The concession stands, at least at section ZZ13, ran out of food and ice in the second quarter

The water fountains, at least at section ZZ13, were filthy (not an exaggeration) and did not work.

I hope he spends more time on this kind of stuff rather than one of 120 players talking to a reporter.

Listening to a segment by Dave Hooker this morning, they discussed that the football program held a players only meeting on Sunday that was spearheaded by the leadership on the team.

Apparently JM3 took responsibility for the dropped passes in a positive light, no pointing fingers, and all players have agreed its time to amp it up to a whole new level, as they admitted this past week was pretty laid back.

Hopefully this refocuses the team and they get back to keeping their heads on straight. I do believe this is a positive and shows the true leadership the team possesses.
My only issue with this: If this team was laid back throughout the week of practices, that's as much on the coaches as it is the players.

Josh Heupel’s crush with Milton has me concerned…It took an injury in 2022 before he was forced to play one of the greatest players in UT history.
One of the greatest players in UT history and one of the worst QBs in Virginia Tech history. Give credit where credit is due, who do you think developed him into that player?

Just as some are concerned with Heupel's decisions thus far as head coach, I am equally concerned that folks on this forum don't trust his judgment after what he's done in such a short time as well as thinking they know QBs more than him. The man won every offensive award there was to win as a QB. He has coached and developed a Heisman QB and as well as a would be finalist.

I see no cause for concern, the man has performed miracles thus far.

I think some people are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. These guys know what they can do. Saturday wasn't it. We got caught sleeping a little and our focus wasn't on the task. I look for this team to have a spark this Saturday. I would say this meeting was more about who they are, what they can do and to leave the outside noise outside. That means media, our own fans etc. Go Vols

Exactly!!!!
I don’t read into it anymore than Milton/Leaders reminding the team if “we” play like “we” did last Saturday next against Florida “we” will get beat, and the importance of this game.
Actually, if they did not have this meeting I would be more concerned.

Hooker is not my favorite podcaster. IMO he sometimes tries to create a story where none exists.

I'm guessing JH thought they were good enough to coast a little bit in practice and rest some people before FU week. I bet he won't do that again. ( If that's what actually happened)

Sounds like this meeting was a “we got to get our heads on straight and play how we know we can” sort of meeting which is exactly what they need.

If this wasn’t meant to be positive I don’t think it would have leaked. I think the players want it out there that they know how we feel, that they agree they are not playing up to their own standards and need to get in the game.
