Vols in NBA Draft

I think a really good comp for KJ is Jrue Holiday. Comparing their freshmen seasons, who is who?

I see Keon as more of a Mikal Bridges/more athletic Danny Green type. Which is worth a lottery pick. Look what Bridges has done for Phoenix

IDK that he can ever shoot as well as them, though. Becoming a 35% 3p shooter seems like the realistic goal.

I see him as taking more of a ballhandler role on offense, but being a guy you don't want to run the offense through more than 30% of the game.

Also, I think when Bridges is a final product, he's going to have a lot more playmaking than most 3 and D guys. He's had a couple stretches where he's taken over playoff games with 1 on 1 offense. I think Keon's going to have a lot more of that in him, and it will look different.

Keon #18

Choice quotes:

Most projections have him in the lottery, but I can’t quite get as excited about Johnson as my peers.

Johnson is a high flier who might have the best YouTube dunk clips of any prospect and seems to have decent lateral mobility. But man, there are warts aplenty here. He’s 6-foot-5 but often looked more like an undersized power forward than a shooting guard.

The best thing you could say about his jumper is that he gets into it easily off the dribble and can elevate and release it over nearly anybody. A lot of times you wish he couldn’t.

It’s possible being away from a constipated Tennessee offense that seemed intent on strangling itself will give Johnson more opportunities to shine.

Springer #20

Doesn't mention the word defense for Keon, but about Springer says:

Whatever you think of his offensive game, the defense was legit.
Constipated Tennessee offense. Guess he’s not a fan.

Keon has flaws but him (and in my estimation even moreso) Jaden were not used correctly this year offensively. Hopefully it was the COVID preseason that played a factor into that.

Also whether fair or not Barnes gets shots taken at from a few NBA pundits for “wasting” talent since the Durant days at Texas.

I don’t think covid played a factor. It’s just the offense he runs.

You see little tweaks some years but nothing major.

FWIW, Cal is the same way and isn’t very offensively flexible. Look at some of the very talented bigs he has had like AD, KAT etc.. that end up playing like traditional centers for him, but once they get to the league, they are stretch bigs from day 1. (Regardless, Cal did a lot of winning with those two players)

Our offense looked good early season. I was worried then it was a little bit fools gold though.

I’m very satisfied to have coach Barnes. But we consistently see teams figure out our offense late in the year and I’d like to see more adjustment. I wish we had an assistant equivalent to Schwartz, but for offense.

I’m not going to re-read all 200 posts, but did any by chance mention Barnes’s involvement? I think that I saw a story on a Knoxville TV station a day or 2 ago that reported Keon consulted with his parents and CRB about entering the NBA draft. Keon said that Barnes advised him to move forward and elect to enter the draft. That selflessness gets buried while the narrative that Barnes failed to optimize or develop players gets spun. It would be in CRB’s best interest for KJ to give him another year, but he instead gives the kid the truth. It’s great to have a head coach that isn’t a serial liar.
