Vols in NBA Draft

Wonder why they still hold the combine since so many players do individual work outs for the different teams?

I’m not going to re-read all 200 posts, but did any by chance mention Barnes’s involvement? I think that I saw a story on a Knoxville TV station a day or 2 ago that reported Keon consulted with his parents and CRB about entering the NBA draft. Keon said that Barnes advised him to move forward and elect to enter the draft. That selflessness gets buried while the narrative that Barnes failed to optimize or develop players gets spun. It would be in CRB’s best interest for KJ to give him another year, but he instead gives the kid the truth. It’s great to have a head coach that isn’t a serial liar.

Pretty much every college coach tells their NBA lottery picks to go ahead and take the money. There was a story about Zion wanting to return to Duke and Coach K not letting him come back because it wasn't in his best interest just a couple years ago.

This isn't unique to Barnes, nor is your spinning everything into a positive about him.

John Calipari does the same exact thing for every player but I’m not sure TGO is gonna praise his selflessness lol

To be fair, Cal has needed to do it in order to maintain his recruiting model, not as some form of selfless act of sacrifice. Not that it changes the focus of what you're driving at, but that's probably not an apple:apples comparison.

That’s a fair point. I also think college fans put too much into a player getting an opinion from their college coach regarding the draft. These guys get advice from agents, scouts, families, NBA draft board, first round promises are made, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player say “yeah I came back because coach so and so truly believed I needed another year despite everyone else saying otherwise” lol

Yes. Advice from their head coach is only a small portion of the totality of the advice they are getting across the spectrum.

It’s mainly for official measurements and to make sure everyone is clear to play. Jared Butler just had that issue. And also there’s an unbiased nature to the process for height, wingspan, etc

Keon isn’t a lock to be a lottery pick.

Did pointing out that Barnes is honest unlike the chronically lying UT head coach a few years before him trigger you?

A few have him around 18-20 now. But most have him in the 12-15 range I've seen

You're looking at bad data. I just searched about 12 mocks, and only 1 reputable guy had Keon at 12 and everyone else was earlier than that.

The only 2 mocks he was lower than 12 were click bait that had someone other than Cade Cunningham at 1 and another that had Scottie Barnes going at 2 with a ton of other nonsense.

The 6-3 was without shoes. The one they look at is the measurement with shoes. His combine height with shoes was 6-4 and 3/4
D
Is there variation in terms of players heights with shoes and without? It seems like you could measure everyone barefoot and then add an inch and a half for with shoes and be done. I guess I thought all shoes were pretty much the same and a players height with shoes would be a fixed amount more than barefoot.

I think a really good comp for KJ is Jrue Holiday. Comparing their freshmen seasons, who is who?

I don't see any similarities at all. Both are good on ball defenders, that's it.

Keon has a way higher ceiling than Jrue had coming out of UCLA, but he'll never be the play-maker/ facilitator Jrue is.

I remember stories of players who would add inserts to their shoes to make the listed height be higher but that's a while back. Never understood why when they measure barefoot too.

While looking over Keon and Jaden's combine numbers, for kicks I went back and peeped Bone's combine performance. He killed basically everything, including the shooting sessions.

Still surprised he hasn't stuck somewhere.

I think his lack of size/strength on the defensive end has really hurt him. That was why Detroit gave up on him

Bone and Bowden both got signed for the summer league, so that's good news at least. Hopefully one or both get a two way spot this year.
