Vols in Summer Leagues Across Continent

Would love to have enough pitchers step up so that we could have both Owenby and Williams coming out of the pen next year

With aj, vjax, stew, and Owenby the future looks a lot brighter. You can tell vjax is starting to get healthy again. Just wished we had more quality arms

I agree. Maddox is in the program 2 years, he was a pretty good freshman, like the guys you mentioned are now. He's playing for Team USA as a Sophomore, think where those guys might be next summer. Taylor Smart too.

6/29 wrap up

Too tired. A really boring day got fantastic about 2 AM. Holy Cow. Stew hit a home run in Alaska that will land next to my morning paper here in Knoxville. What a game!

Kudos to Derek Lance on a fine day for the Cincy Steam!

Just curious why Nick Williams isn't playing summer ball right now?

I'm only guessing here, but the two main reasons guys play summer ball are reps/experience and exposure. He's already had plenty of both. Might want to focus his attention on conditioning or school work. Many summer leagues have a preponderance of underclassmen for these reasons.

6/28 wrap up

9 AB, 5 H, 4 R, 4 RBI, 1 DBL, 1 HR, 2 SO.

Those are VJax's numbers over the last two games. And to think I was "worried" about him 2 weeks ago. On Monday he was batting .143, as of Friday night, he's batting .308.

AJ finally struck out, twice, tonight.

Stewart went 2/5 with 2 RBI's, not too shabby.

As impressive as VJax's night was, Owenby wasn't messing about on the mound. In his final inning, he hit the first batter. He then struck out the next 3 batters in a row. Very nice performance, and I might add the closer who replaced him gave up two runs, maybe they'll let him finish next time.

Lotta baseball this week, and we ain't got to the weekend yet, lord help me.

GBO!

You're not alone brother. I was highly concerned with Jackson as well. I was actually concerned before summer leagues started, simply due to the timing of his injury. I figured he would come out slow in summer league from his injury....my concern being could he get it back in time, being a young player. We all know slumps can last for a week. We've also seen major league all stars slump for an entire season.

I feel I'm not doing a good job of saying what I mean. Simply put... My concern was due to the timing VJax would come out slow in the summer league and perhaps not get back on track all summer. Meaning he would be the same player coming back to campus that he was when he left for summer league. That wouldn't be bad, but we need this guy to take that next step. I think he's going to do just that.

As for Owenby...his freshman year was up and down. The injury as well as off the field stuff was unfortunate. But I'm still not sure some fans see the upside in this kid. I live in Powell, watched this kid in HS. This kid is PLENTY good to help this team. And I think he has shown flashes as a reliever/closer. Just as most frosh do, he was inconsistent. But this kid will undoubtably help from the bullpen. I'm not gonna let go of the thought of him being in the rotation in the future. Even if it's a Sunday guy, it could happen. But in my mind, I hope we recruit stud all Americans leaving even Owenby scrapping for a job.

Hey, can't a man dream? LOL.

I won't say more but big news is coming I am hearing. If true it will end up being very good

Hit and run IMO. LMAO, just kidding. I trust your word and will happily await the arrival of some good news.

As bad as its sucked the past few years, just think how sweet it's gonna be when this program gets back.

I may have made a statement I regret. If true I think it will be very good news but others may disagree

I plan on doing some analysis of stats here soon and in looking at them briefly. Opposing teams batted .204 against Owenby, best on the team. Of the guys that pitched similar innings, only Martin was in his ball park at .228. The problem was the walks, 22...only Godley and Williams had more. If he can get that fixed he could definitely be a weapon.

Big game in the Alaskan Baseball League today, and it's a rare early game because it's a DH. At 6 PM the Miners (9-4) visit the Bucs (7-4). For those that find the normal 11 PM start time too late, this is your chance to see Simcox, Stewart and maybe even Bettencourt against one of the best teams in the ABL. It will probably be a seven inning game.

Before that game though, The Brigade plays at 4:30, Team USA at 5 PM and the Red Sox at 5:30 PM. If some Vols get starts, I'll post the links. GBO!
