War in Ukraine

There are reports of T-55s being shipped west on train cars. That is a tank designed in 1945 and mass produced through the 50's as their main battle tank. Actually more T-55s were built than any other tank in history.

But it is 4 generations behind the Leopard, especially in targeting. It has a 100mm gun up against 120mm on most NATO tanks. Word is they are going to use them as mobile artillery and avoid tank-to-tank. Interesting. It carries around 40 rounds. Would they load them completely with HE and not anti-armor? If they did that and one encountered a Leopard the crew of the 55 will wish they had ejection seats.
Leopard II is my favorite MBT. Always intrigued by the argument on who would win between Leopard and Abrams

If Russia is smart they would consolidate forces to the east. Based on what I've learned about how disjointed the Russian military is I'm not sure they will or could effectively do this.

The Russian military is made up of independently run armies, more similar in structure to organized crime families than effective central military command.

Reality sets in...

Patriot Missiles Won’t Save Ukraine

Patriot operating on its lonesome is a tenuous proposition at best; while a first-rate system technologically, the Patriot cannot be used to full effect if it is divorced from air defense doctrine. Patriot systems are limited to pinpoint defense of major assets and are designed to operate in tandem with air defenses engaging targets at higher and lower altitudes. Without these additions, Patriot will have too many threats to engage and the result will either be porous coverage that doesn’t protect its defended assets, or coverage that quickly subsides when Patriot runs out of interceptors.

I'm sure @volgr will be around any minute to tell us how Russia is curb stomping the Ukrainians and that this is all western propaganda.

Obviously the Russian troops running to the rear are just in a hurry to spread the word that they are "winning" and need more vodka at the front for victory celebrations.

Boom.

Britain has delivered long-range ‘Storm Shadow’ cruise missiles to Ukraine ahead of expected counteroffensive, sources say

The United Kingdom has supplied Ukraine with multiple Storm Shadow cruise missiles, giving Ukrainian forces a new long-range strike capability in advance of a highly anticipated counteroffensive against Russian forces, multiple senior Western officials told CNN.

The Storm Shadow is a long-range cruise missile with stealth capabilities, jointly developed by the UK and France, which is typically launched from the air. With a firing range in excess of 250km, or 155 miles, it is just short of the 185-mile range capability of the US-made surface-to-surface Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, that Ukraine has long asked for.

So...

At some point, we'll see if the Russian AA can intercept these as they approach the Kerch Bridge.

These missiles were used in Syria where Russia publicly stated their air defense, "successfully countered the air and naval strikes".

Here's a before/after photo depicting Russia's "success" defending a chemical weapons facility.
