War in Ukraine

It's almost a certainty Ukraine didn't get M14s from us. I liked the M14 and wondered why they weren't available as military surplus. Turns out they were classified as machine guns because with the selector (not built into the rifle) they can be made to fire full automatic. If you've fired an M14 on full automatic, you quickly realize that anything besides the M14E2 with bipod is uncontrollable. Almost all our M14s (new and used) were intentionally destroyed.

A large number of M14s in the government’s inventory were destroyed (“demilitarized”) during the tenure of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. The rifles were typically destroyed by cutting the receivers in two with a torch or machine shear. The vast majority of the government’s M14 rifles, some in brand-new, unissued condition, were destroyed by the late 1960s or early 1970s. A few remained on hand for sniping use and other purposes, but only a relatively small percentage have survived.

The latest Russian crew just arrived at the ISS. Sometime between launch and docking, they ditched their standard blue flight suits and donned Yellow suits with blue stripes, which just happen to be the national colours of a particular contested neighboring country. Someone in the Kremlin is blowing out some blood vessels in their head right about now

I wonder if they used some of their personal weight allowance to get these on board. It would seem if Roscosmos personnel were aware of them and loaded them some heads would roll. Heads will probably roll anyway.

His country wanted to align to the west, they voted for that. It's in shambles because Putin couldn't stand one of his most important former territories aligning with the west so he invaded. He prostituted himself to no one unless you consider a country wanting to self determine instead of being dictated to.

Why do you blame everyone here except the one invading a sovereign neighbor nation?
The Russians are making the wife beater defense “Look what you made me do!”

Especially since the head of Roscomos has already shown himself to be a total Putin apologist. This sounds like there are probably a lot of individuals throughout Russian agencies that silently despise what they are doing to Ukraine. So many Russians have relatives who are in Ukraine

I trained with the M14 in basic. It is a very accurate rifle well suited for the Ukrainian terrain. It's also very durable and easy to maintain. 350yd hits were easier with the 14 than the 16 which I trained with after basic. Of course ole Huner was an expert.

Your premises are delusional.

It's apparent to any rational observer that Russia couldn't beat its way out of a wet paper bag. They are being absolutely PWNED by Ukraine.

Putin falls out a window in 3... 2... 1...
Putin can’t fall out of any window. That dirtbag is so deep underground in the basement a bunker of a bunker that it probably takes him half an hour just to climb the steps to see daylight
By the way, have you seen the reports that Putin may have Parkinson’s. So let’s see, a psychotic murderous dictator, who surrounds himself with yes men, is watching his military falter, walking around in a bunker with his limbs shaking from Parkinson’s…..

I don’t know about the rest of Ukraine’s military, but the Azov Battalion is full of Nazis. After the 2014 revolution, the Azov battalion leadership were given several key political appointments.

Define Nazi. They have pledged their fealty to Hitler? They openly campaign for the systemic killing of Jews, homosexuals, etc.? The Russian government doesn’t like them so they labeled them as Nazis to justify their hate?

That was a huge FU moment by the Russian Cosmonauts that will probably leave Putin fuming.

Nazi meant one thing historically, a member or sympathizer or soldier serving the National Workers Socialist Party (NASDP). Nowadays though however it’s definition for members of both sides of the political divide has expanded to “anyone who disagrees with me about anything”. “Membership”obviously has grown accordingly

We had the M14 in Basic and Infantry AIT - and the M14E2 for qualification in one of the two. I didn't fire an M16 until it was for familiarization while on Okinawa - it felt like a toy. I agree the M14 seems to make a lot of sense in locations like Ukraine - almost any place not confined and where longer range is the thing. You shot better than me - I was extremely nearsighted - still managed sharpshooter, and did better with the E2 than most of the guys - maybe with light rain and oil flying off the receiver, glasses help.

He just made a public speech in front of a full stadium of people. Did you miss that? Geez, you guys are delusional.

Precisely

I agree with what you said earlier the M14 on full auto is almost useless except maybe at very close range. It just isn't controllable. After the first round everything is a blur. Spray and pray mode. I saw a few people who could control it fairly well but I wasn't one of them.

I think the guy that scored me during qualifications may have been nearsighted also. I didn't think I was shooting that well but I'll take his word for it.

I don’t know if they worship Hitler if that’s what you mean. But they are ultra-nationalists that use a lot of nazi Germany’s symbols and tactics. They’re heavily armed and absolutely brutalize people they deem undesirables or just disagree with.

There’s a video from a couple years ago of them trapping people in a court house and burning them alive. It’s one of the more disturbing things I’ve seen.

Then call them ultra nationalists. I could buy a sword and walk around under a banner saying SPQR, that wouldn’t make me a Roman Centurion. Calling everyone right wing a Nazi diminishes the absolute horror and evil that was the real thing

So I have cigars with a buddy of mine last night. His gov relations firm represents ah.. a leading mercenary firm. Not his direct client but he sat in on a meeting and this was the take:

1. Russia losses 20-30k
2. Ukraine losses over 120k hard to know military vs civilians since they’ve kinda same at this point
3. CIA and firms like theirs training Ukraine last couple of years and planning for this is why bridges etc were taken out with precision to slow advance.
4. Yes they were running the insurgents in Donbas etc but Biden pulled out soon after getting in office.
5. US operators no longer on the ground but Polish and French and one other I forget are very active.
6. Russia mostly owns the air but EU weapons are making it less of an issue because they can still hit heavy armor outside of LOS.
7. Ukrainian old and young, even ones who were Russia army before HATE Russia.
8. Thinks Russia can take ground but can’t keep it long enough to move forward because of special ops harassment #5and #6
9. Russia will put everything into surrounding Kyiv to try to force a surrender so they can declare win.

That is just one take but I assume they have better intel than most.
