the "wtf" style responses are oblivious to a point.

Its a deeper topic than "Bleedin orange!" and "If you aint a Vol, you're nutthin!"

Gotta admit, when I came in to this thread I was expecting a "ZOMG, WE NEED TO ROOT FER COACH DOOLEY TO LOOZ SO WEZ CAN GETZ BETTER COACH".

So say Dooley goes 21-18 over a 3 years span, gets fired and UT hires a " great" coach.

It will still take him a few years to get back to level ground right?

So were talking 5 to 6 years before UT is somewhat relevant again, obviously UT would benefit from Dooley doing well now and us being somewhat relevant in 3 years and potentially back to a real contender in 4-5 years.

but I believe that bolded part is what the OP is struggling with. That's tough to buy given the track record, regardless how you slice it. Clearly we all know we're best off winning the next 47 national titles under Dooley, but that doesn't fit the hypothetical.

The problem will come in if we're winning enough to just tag along with the real contenders and find it hard to make a move. That's 21st century Fulmer redux and I want no part of that.

If we can win 9-10 games a year I'm happy! I don't need championships....it would be icing on the cake.... just love watching my vols.

Considering the way the SEC has shaped up, I think you're looking at being 5 years behind right now.

Is the Vol fan base really that patient? I dont think so, but that's just one man's opinon.

That would be the minimum, unless Dooley is Saban-like or close to it. There is a possibility that he is. I just don't put much stock in it as there's no evidence to support it.

Both Saban and Meyer entered the SEC as proven coaches.

Would VKAman or someone please list the National Championship caliber coaches available when Kiffin left?

Depends on how well Dooley recruits. Mike Shula and Ron Zook couldn't coach a lick and it showed in their records, but because of their recruiting, their successors didn't take long at all to return Alabama and Florida to championship contention.

The 8 early enrollees had a lot to do with the recruiting success along with Chaney and Thompson. I don't know, for example, if there would have been any difference in this year recruiting class had, say Kippy Brown, been hired and he retained the same staff.

Additionally, it seems Kippy would have taken a shorter contract for a chance to prove himself and would have been equally as likely to success as is Dooley, but we'd have a lot better option out than the one we have no (e.g. long contract versus short).

I agree the early enrollees did help this class. Chaney and Thompson were vital in recruiting and will be a hugh factor in rebuilding the Tennessee football program.
I like Kippy. He is a class act and may have been a good hire. We do not know what kind of class Kippy would have signed.

Dooley and staff did hold the class together for the most part pulled in some big time recruits in just a few days.. Stone, Rogers and Hunter just to name three.
Under the circimstances Dooley did an outstanding job.

losing is no fun, but it's part of insanity driven fandom. Hope is at the very core of fandom. Homerism tends to follow.

I have hope and our coach did save some recruits and picked up a couple of absolute head scratchers. The prevailing point here is that we should see what we have on the field before declaring this an interim hire. I tend to agree with that.

I mostly agree, and have as much hope for Tennessee football as the next guy. But it's not so much that I'm (and I know you weren't only talking about me) declaring this an interim hire and Dooley a failure already; I'm just saying that based on his track record, it probably will be. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong but I doubt I will be.

I think CPF got so much time based on his 1990's success with the Vols.

CDD will likely get his time extended based on 'hope' and 'faith' in the direction the program 'could' be heading. It's that widespread 'hope' that I keep seeing here that makes me think we could be reluctant to cut the cord if he's mediocre (wins 2 or 3 games beyond what should be the gimmes, but still short of getting a sniff at the championship).

We had a shot at Stoops but likely weren't going to get him. If there weren't any available, though, why not just keep Kippy Brown around, have an easier way out (I think utmba said something almost exactly like this), and hire a championship-caliber coach next offseason--when it's not two weeks before Signing Day?

That UT would have to go ahead and pay for a proven coach if Dooley loses is ad certain as why we should have paid for a proven coach when Kiffin left. It's just a delay in understanding that reality.

This is very much like Bama fans failing to pay what it takes to having a winning program. They had to lose enough games before they were willing to pay Saban. After this hiring decision, I suspect the same is true for UT.

But, of course, I hope he wins. I also hope I win the lottery, but I haven't even bought a ticket.

Hamilton is attempting to recreate what he did with hire of Bruce Pearl. If MH is correct, this hire should prove to be worth the risk within 3 to 5 years.

There is information that not all of the fan base is privy to so let's give Dooley an opportunity to coach his first game before we speculate on his possible coaching record for the next 2 to 3 years.

What does this even mean? Are you willing to write Coach Dooley off before he has coached a single game for Tennessee?

"To say that there is some doubt about whether CDD can ever win a championship at UT is a gross understatement." . . . are you kidding me?

"There's also doubt that he can ever win the SEC East." . . . What basis is there for this statement?

I don't like to make fun of people posting threads or to be disrespectful, but this one really leaves me speechless. Some people just don't seem happy unless they are crying that the "sky is falling." Coach Dooley seems to be a stand-up guy, he seems to be a decent recruiter, and just about everyone in the coaching business (including Nick Saban) has a lot of respect for him. Will he win championships? I don't know, but I hope so. Let's see the first season play out before we start talking about the supposed "doubtful" ability of Coach Dooley to win at UT.

Well said and enough said. Now let's stop this ridiculousness! Go VOLS!!!

Again, I actually thought about that one. Wouldn't have been Tennessee's worst play, IMO.

I can't see why Rogers and Hunter wouldn't have signed with Kippy. He fits them better than does CDD as a coach. Stone... was rumored a silent to CLK for a good deal of the recruiting season.

Dooley has to be given a fair shot at this, anyone with a brain shouldn't expect too much this year, 5-7 wins again.

The following year, will be rough as well, young QB, young OL...again 5-7 wins will be where UT finds itself.

His third year should be a year in which we see results, by then, last years class will be seniors and the current crop will have had plenty of time to develop and get acclimated.

It will be hard to sit through 2 more years of mediocrity. It's going to happen barring a small miracle...I say if he doesn't produce come year 3, then you have to start thinking about a change.

Lots of variables here...if Dooley and staff are pulling in very good classes, then there will be more optimism, if they aren't producing on the field and aren't bringing in the talent necessary to win in the SEC, the seat will get hot sooner than later.
