What's best for the future of UT football: Dooley teams win or... (merged)

At first glance, I though Kippy could have been given a trial run, bu in the end he would have been nothing more than interim coach, UT is not going to be good next year, regardless of the coach.

Hamilton would have been looking for a replacement from day 1.

That's the point. Maybe it was impossible for UT to land a big name 3 weeks before NSD, but with a whole year to evaluate and talk to possible candidates, who knows what might have happened...

Oh well, what's done is done. Here's to hoping this staff can do the job. There's really not much of a choice at this point.

The real question is: will he be able to recruit a top 10 class from scratch? Kiffin recruited this class, Dooley just signed them.

And before anyone mentions the recruiting under Saban, we have no way to know if Dooley was behind those classes, or if they were a product of a good coach and a team likely to win.

Dooley inherited 8 kids, all of them good by them way.

With that said, it is not fair to judge his recruiting prowess based on him having 3 weeks and basically a 2 man staff to work with.

Looking at the recruits that we were able to pull in on such a short notice was impressive to me.

Stone, Rogers, Hunter, Loften, all big time recruits...Dooley should do fine in recruiting, unless he completely bombs on the field.

There was a book I read a couple of months back called "Every Day A Saturday" or something like that. Followed a few coaches around during the 2003 season. You got to see how coaches functioned during a typical week. One of the coaches followed was Nick Saban and how LSU's prep and weekly routine went during days leading up to the Auburn game. Dooley is rarely mentioned in that book, but he did co-conspire with Saban on recruiting.

Hindsight is 20/20.

This thread is nonsense. In the unlikely event that Dooley led us to an SECCG or a NCG, I feel like the OP would be sulking in a corner because Dooley's contract would get extended.

How is it nonsense if even you say that it's unlikely that this staff will ever win a championship?

And, why would that be a bad thing?

That way, Kippy either proves himself and retains the job or Hamilton has an entire year to find a suitable long-term replacement.

So UT would have 4 coaches in 4 years? That is an easy sell to the kids.

Why can't Dooley win the SEC East (if not the SEC)? Who was Nick Saban before he landed the job at LSU or Urban Meyer before Florida? Saban had one good year at Mich St. after three seasons where he never won more than 7 games. Urban won some games, but again it was in the Mountain West & the MAC.

What I'm saying is, you don't have to hire a big name coach to win SEC & national championships. Sometimes you just have to find that diamond in the rough. And that's exactly what Hamilton thinks he found in Dooley.

Hahahaha. Oh this is classic.

If you don't have to hire big names these days to win SEC or national championships, then can you name the last coach who came into the SEC with a losing record as a college coach and did it? It's certainly been awhile.

Meyer and Saban were the complete opposite of a "diamond in the rough". They had success at multiple college head coaching positions before they came into the SEC. If Meyer's wins don't count because they were in the Mountain West, then I guess Dooley's vast number of losses in the WAC shouldn't worry any of us either?

Just saying they weren't big name coaches like a Muschamp, Stoops, Gruden, Davis, Lovie Smith, etc.....

In some ways, more proven than Muschamp, less than the others.

But there was an entire range of coaches with backgrounds more similiar to theirs. They just weren't available in a 3-day window.

Thus, why a 3-day window?

You didn't read the OP's original post did you. He wants UT to win. He just doesn't think it's going to happen under Dooley.

Please shut it. You've gone over the deep end.

You completely missed the point of the thread.

That's only true if you assume about Kippy what concerns me about Dooley. The difference being that there was an easy explanation for recruits.

Our coach left 3 weeks before NSD and we wanted to take our time before making a long-term hiring decision to ensure that we got the best coach available for our program. Then, you give that coach a solid 6-year contract.

If they can't understand that, they probably wouldn't be academically qualified.

Some of you need to get real for a minute. We have never been a team that has "dominated". Even in the 90's when we were winning alot we lucked into a lot of wins and always seemed to sweat at UGA, FL, etc. Heck, even Kentucky took us to the wire a few times. So for you guys to be getting on here crying for the good ole days, you need to quit romanticizing and remember what those days were really like...blood, sweat, tears, and luck. And even at that, we weren't "dominant".

If UT's hiring process extends until the end of January, maybe ( big maybe ) you get a more proven coach, but you would lose this class.

While some may be alright with getting a better coach ( again, big maybe ) and losing out on an entire class.

Obviously Hamilton seen it as a need to get the best he can get within that time period.

You completely missed the point of the thread.

Thanks! It's amazing, isn't it? The blind homerism is unreal.

All this concern existed before NSD. This is as good of time to talk about it as any.

Why dont you just give our new coach and staff a chance before saying they will never win here? Everyone is entitled to their opinion.....but why not wait to form one with some tangible evidence?

What's your point? We had good teams "back in the day" before college football became as big a cash cow as the NFL? I'm just saying be realistic. Just because you go out and hire a name, it doesn't mean automatic success. Ask Notre Dame, South Carolina, Michigan, etc, etc....

I'm not 100% sold on CDD, but to be starting threads about trying to get rid of him before he's coached his first practice is utter non-sense. I know its a free public forum and you can post what you want, but come on. Everybody starts somewhere. I'd almost guarantee in your job you're not where you were when you started. You prove it in the trenches. That goes for salesmen, bankers, custodians, fry cooks, mba's, preachers, and even football coaches.

How would you like it if people were questioning your ability in your profession before you even started? I don't know, maybe you've got the right idea. Maybe this ticks him and he feels like he needs to prove you wrong.

This logic is bogus because it puts a higher priority on one recruiting class than it does on 6 years of coaching.

It's a decent class. CLK had a decent one last year. 8 were already enrolled. 'Losing the class' probably means getting one ranked about 25th instead of 10th.

Besides, it seems Lance Thompson and Jim Chaney get most of that credit. They were hired by CLK.

I keep hearing over and over about Dooley's record at LA Tech. His record at LA Tech is totally irrelevant. Go do your research into the reasons behind the 4-8 season. See the schedule they played and see that they were fighting injuries to a point that converted DB walk-ons were starting at wide receiver by mid-season. The point is, this staff has not fielded a team yet and people on here are complaining about mediocrity. Their record is 0-0 . Your boy Kiffin's record is 7-6, and worse than that before he got here. Give CDD a chance to show his hand before you call it.

Why dont you just give our new coach and staff a chance ...?

Again, they are hired and they have their chance.

If you consider my posting thoughts on a message board as so powerful it overcomes what they can do with jobs in hand, you see them as much worse than I do.

Yeah, the WAC is a brutal schedule.
